homemade manwich recipe copycat sloppy joes

This is the best sloppy joe recipe ever! First of all, it’s homemade, and we all know homemade is always better. On top of that, this recipe (although homemade) is still easy and quick to make. Plus, it freezes well too! It really is perfect.

Watch how easy it is to prepare this Sloppy Joes Recipe!

So, ditch the can, mix up your own flavorful sloppy joe sauce with simple ingredients, and still have dinner on the table in less than 30 minutes. I love easy ground beef recipes and easy dinners!

How to Make Homemade Manwich Sauce

homemade manwich sauce

Not too sweet, not too spicy, but a whole lot of tangy zip. That’s the best way to describe what this sloppy joe sauce takes like.

My whole family really likes it! Apparently, a lot of other people like it too.

Hence, you can buy Manwich at nearly every grocery store and it has been around for a while.

You can use fresh or frozen diced green peppers in this recipe. Most of the other ingredients are easy to keep in the pantry, like the dried seasonings and tomato sauce. Even the buns can be kept on hand in the freezer for a little while without drying out too much.

Celery seed may not be one that you already have in your pantry – I use it only for this recipe! Feel free to try the recipe without it. I have not made it without the celery seed before, but I’m guessing that it will still be delicious.

Once you’re finished with your homemade manwich sauce, simply add the sauce to your 1-pound of browned ground beef, bring it to a boil, and then let it simmer for 10 minutes.

Your Homemade Manwich is Ready to Serve

Finished homemade manwich recipe

Once you’ve got your manwich recipe all finished, you can either freeze it or serve it. If you’re going to serve it, try it with some nice toasted hamburger buns! Enjoy your fun, delicious, and messy dinner! (Don’t forget to let us know what you think about the recipe after you try it!)

To make this TERRAfit-friendly, use a low-sugar ketchup and serve with a whole grain bun, or eat it without a bun!

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Combine all sauce ingredients in a medium bowl.
  • Brown 1 pound ground beef, drain the fat. Add the sauce to the meat and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Serve with toasted hamburger buns.

Preparing For the Freezer:

  • Store the sloppy joe filling in a gallon-size resealable freezer bag, or portion into smaller bags according to your needs. Label and date the bags, remove as much air as possible, and freeze flat. The buns may also be frozen.

Prepare after Freezing:

  • Remove from freezer and thaw in the refrigerator overnight, or place frozen sloppy joe mixture directly into pan. Heat gradually in a saucepan or skillet until warmed through and serve.

Recipe Notes

Make this extra healthy by adding some cooked quinoa and skip the buns. Serve it over cooked carrots or squash instead!

  • EXCELLENT RECIPE!! THANKS!! I didn’t have dried garlic or onion, but substituted fresh, and it was AMAZING!! Even my teenager had seconds!

    • Thank you for your comment and review, Dori! That’s good to know that it works just as well with the fresh substitutes. I love this sloppy joe recipe too, I actually just made it again last week and have some in my freezer right now! 🙂

  • I am making your Halloween Puff Pastry Intestines for our party this Saturday. Does one recipe of the Homemade Sloppy Joe make the 3 to 3 1/2 cups you need for the intestines recipe?

  • Have used this recipe a few times, great flavor! During Corona quarantine it was an old time meal that helped make us all happy in our New York home 😃

    • So happy to hear this Maureen! Even my non-sloppy-joe-liking husband approves of this one! 🙂 Thanks for commenting and stay safe, my friend!

  • Thanks! As soon as I read the label and found 2 kinds of corn syrup (bad, and worse) I wanted to make my own. You made my day.

    • Right?! Yes, this homemade sloppy joe recipe tastes just as good, if not better, and the ingredients can be much better! I’m so glad you found the recipe. Hope you like it!

  • Australian follower here, what is the difference between can tomato sauce and tomato ketcup?

Here tomato ketcup is called tomato sauce.

    Thanks

    • “Ketchup” here is basically a spicier, seasoned tomato sauce (often made with vinegar) in a bottle. “Tomato sauce” is usually a canned cooked tomato puree, unseasoned or just lightly seasoned. Hopefully that helps!

  • This was great. Used green chili’s instead of green pepper and onion powder instead of dried onion and the family loved it. Thanks

    • Great adaptations! I’m so glad everyone loved it. This recipe is definitely my family’s favorite sloppy joes. Thank you for your comment and review, Bubbles!

  • Not for me. The flavor was a lot weaker than Manwich. Not bold enough

  • We’ve been tryin different sloppy joe recipes for a while now. FINALLY FOUND A KEEPER!!!!!
Sooooo easy. Cleanup was also very easy. Thanks

  • So good!! Perfect like it is but I also add several dashes of my favorite hot sauce for a little extra kick.

  • I just made this with True Made Veggie Ketchup – a no sugar (keto) catsup. and because of the lack of any sugar, I only added a couple little drops of the mustard. It was awesome.

  • Sloppy joes!!!!!!!! Really great sandwiches. My mother adds and extra ingredient to her manwich!

  • This is a def. keeper! We’ve been craving sloppy joes, but I simply refused to buy the canned stuff. The only thing that I didn’t have on-hand, was tomato sauce….On any given day, I normally have several cans but not today lol I used a combo of my no sugar ketchup and regular ketchup which I keep for my son because he says the sugar free one is gah-rossss! lol It turned out surprisingly well and we loved it! Thanks!

    • Haley - Fabulessly Frugal

Awesome, great substitution idea! Marinara sauce or crushed tomatoes could also work if you are in pinch (it may change the flavor and texture).

  • I have had this recipe for MANY years and finally tried it. It is TOTALLY AMAZING! I don’t know where you came up with this recipe, but it is spot on as far as tasting like the original MANWICH recipe. I noticed that the ingredients on the can said that they used some carrots, and I had some baby carrots in our freezer, so I put 3 or 4 of them into our Handy Chopper and pulverized them and added them to maybe give that extra depth of flavor that another reviewer commented on that was missing. But now I guess we’ll never know since the carrots didn’t change the flavor, but I do think maybe they added that extra depth. I also used fresh chopped onions and garlic since it is what I had on hand…..
Anyway, thank you so much for sharing this fantastic, VERY MANWICH -Y recipe!
