I am always down to try new and tasty recipes like this Air Frier Smashed Potatoes recipe. How about you?

This is such an easy appetizer to put together and you really only need two ingredients. This also makes this a great recipe to make in a pinch to serve your guests.

Plus I mean who doesn’t love potatoes? Chop them, mash them, or smash them, potatoes are a star ingredient for sides and appetizers.

Ingredients and Supplies You’ll Need to Make Air Fryer Smashed Potatoes:

Ingredients:

  • Potatoes – I used Yukon gold potatoes
  • Garlic salt seasoning

Supplies

Do the potatoes need to be boiled?

Essentially yes, the potatoes need to be softened up in order for them to be smashed for this recipe.

If you want to skip the boiling, you could always try microwaving the potatoes to soften them up. Delish gives some good instructions on how to microwave a potato.

What types of seasoning to use?

When we made this recipe we stuck with the simple garlic salt and it was absolutely delicious, but there are more options depending on your tastebuds!

Here are a few options to try:

  • Ranch seasoning
  • Chipotle
  • Seasoned salt
  • Chipotle lime
  • Salt and pepper
  • Chili powder

How to Make Air Fryer Smashed Potatoes:

Step 1: Boil the potatoes

Use a large pot, put cold water along with the raw washed potatoes, and cool them until they can be pierced with a fork easily.

This should take about 10-15 minutes.

You can also add a little bit of salt to the water to help season the potatoes even more.

Step 2: Smash the potatoes

Once the potatoes have been boiled, carefully drain them and remove them from the pot.

Then, place the potatoes on a plate and use a ramekin or other kitchen tool with a flat bottom to smash the potatoes to make them flat.

Step 3: Air fry potatoes

Place the smashed potatoes in a lightly sprayed air fryer basket.

It’s okay if the potatoes fall apart a little while transferring them to the air fryer, they will still be so tasty!

Then spray the tops of the potatoes with oil and season them to your liking.

Turn the air fryer on and cook the potatoes for 5-8 minutes at 400 degrees F or 200 degrees C, or until potatoes are crispy to your liking.

Desserts for the air fryer

Appetizers are not the only fabulous thing you can make in the air fryer. Desserts can be made wonderfully in the air fryer too!

  • Cathy, this is a wonderful recipe originally developed by the Pioneer Woman. They were called Crash Hot Potatoes. I microwave my potatoes, smash with a glass and coat with olive oil and Monterey Steak Seasoning. I change out the seasoning depending on what I grab from the cupboard. I serve with sour cream and sometimes homemade applesauce (like a latke). These are great as a side but never thought of it as an appetizer. Originally I made them in the oven but now the air fryer is the only way to go. Just got your cookbook and the cheat sheet. Will be giving them as Christmas gifts. We have a travel trailer and I use my air fryer so much as well as at home. Thanks for all of the great ideas. I have an oven and love that I can cook an entire meal for the two of us without heating up the big oven. So glad I found your YouTube channel and your recipes. Thanks, Carol
