Hasselback potatoes in the air fryer are fun and easy

Ingredients and supplies needed to make Air Fryer Hasselback Potatoes:

Ingredients:

  • 5 russet potatoes
  • Olive oil
  • Flake salt
  • Tony’s Cajun seasoning

Supplies:

How to Cut Hasselback Potatoes

The hardest part of this recipe is cutting the potato slices. To make authentic hasselback potatoes you have to thinly cut slices into the potatoes, without cutting all the way through. To successfully do this you need a sharp knife (this Victorinox knife is my all-time favorite), cutting board, and chopsticks.

Place the potato on the cutting board. Take the chopsticks and place them on the long sides of the potato – this means that your potato is in the middle of the chopsticks.

Then take your knife and cut slices into the potato, stopping when you reach the chopsticks. Your slices can be as thin or as thick as you want. But I recommend slices that are about ¼-inch slices for the best thickness.

Types of potatoes to use:

While this is a great recipe to use the tried and true russet potatoes with, you can also try using Yukon gold or red potatoes for this delicious recipe.

How to make Air Fryer Hasselback Potatoes

Step 1: Prepare the potatoes

First, prepare your potatoes by washing and drying them. You want to make sure your potatoes are dry or they won’t properly and fully cook in the air fryer.

Step 2: Slice the potatoes

Place the potato on the cutting board and take the chopsticks and place them on the long sides of the potato – this means that your potato is in the middle of the chopsticks.

Then take your knife and cut slices into the potato, stopping when you reach the chopsticks. Your slices can be as thin or as thick as you want. But I recommend slices that are about ¼-inch slices for the best thickness.

Step 3: Air Fry Haselbacken Potatoes

Once your potatoes are cut, preheat the air fryer for 5 minutes at 400°F/200°C.

Spray or baste olive oil onto the outsides of the potatoes. Then, season the potatoes with flake salt and cajun seasoning.

Feel free to season the potatoes anyway that you want. Try a melted butter mixture with fresh parsley, thyme, rosemary, and garlic powder. Or keep it simple with salt and pepper. It’s up to you!

When your potatoes are prepped and ready, go ahead and place them in the air fryer.

Air fry at 350°F/175°C for 15-20 minutes. At the 15 minute mark, check on your potatoes, if they aren’t thoroughly cooked to your liking, cook for an extra 5 or so minutes.

Air Frying Note:

Because all air fryers are different, your cooking time will vary. Be sure to keep an eye on them!

Toppings for Hasselback Potatoes

Finish your air fryer hasselback potatoes with delicious and flavor-rich toppings. Of course, you can add any toppings you like. But I recommend:

  • Bacon (I made two slices of bacon and cut it up)
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Chopped chives
  • Sour cream ranch (in a bowl mix together 1 cup sour cream with 1 tablespoon ranch dressing mix)

  • Cathy, you have been a great help to me in using my air fryer. I was completely lost when I first received it. I used russet potatoes and followed the recipe. I checked after 15 minutes and decided to give it 5 more minutes. They were still not even close to being cooked through. Another 5 minutes helped some, but they were still pretty raw. What did I do wrong? The potatoes I used were baking size. I have a Cosori 5.8 qt air fryer that I purchased recently.

    • Hi Jeanette,

You did not do anything wrong. The time will vary depending on the size of the potatoes. Just note what works for you, and keep on air frying!
