14 Meal Planning Tips {Plus Meal Planning Service!}

Meal Planning Tips!

First of all, what exactly is Meal Planning anyway? It is whatever way you organize yourself to cook a meal – the plan you make before you shop. Meal planning is a personal thing though because something that works for me might not work for you.

The goal is to find a process that is enjoyable and effective for YOU!

So here are some tips and tricks that might help you out…

  • Schedule time each week to make your plan – block it out on your calendar
  • Look at your schedule and decide how many meals you need to plan – some meals will yield leftovers, so you can plan less meals (Yay leftovers!), or you may have dinner plans with other people or other activities some nights
  • Estimate how much time will you have to prepare the meal and choose recipes that fit in your schedule – slow cooker, Instant Pot, 30-minute skillet meals, meals that take an hour to cook, etc
  • Check the weather – it can put you in the mood for certain foods, if it is going to be a rainy week you might want to plan for soup one night, if it will be warm you might want to grill something, and so on
  • Think about the ingredients you have in your home that need to be used and choose recipes accordingly – don’t let your food go to waste
  • Check your local grocery store ad for sales – you may want to plan some meals according to which ingredients are on sale at the time
  • Try to overlap ingredients – choosing recipes for the week with some of the same ingredients will minimize how many things you need to buy
  • Make the first meal of the week, the most simple meal – start things off nice and easy for yourself so you will have a better chance of keeping the motivation going all week long
  • Assign a theme to each day of the week (i.e. breakfast for dinner, salad night, Mexican night) – this can make choosing the recipes for your week a lot easier and faster
  • Create a master recipe list with the meals you love – having a go-to list of tried and true recipes can save a lot of time
  • Prepare ingredients in bulk that you know you will use – cook and season ground beef and/or chicken and freeze or refrigerate it for future use, chop veggies in advance, meal prep things that you can do in advance and know you will use in future meals
  • Prepare the meal in advance – with some recipes (freezer meals!) you can make double (or more), then freeze the portion that you don’t use that night and save it for next week or next month
  • Try new recipes 1 to 2 times each month – adding new recipes to your meal plan can be fun, but you don’t want to get too overwhelmed
  • Have a quick, easy backup plan in case something goes awry with your plan one night – keep a freezer meal on hand and/or have a meal idea that involves pantry staples and doesn’t take long to prepare
