8 Amazon Prime Benefits Worth Knowing About in 2026

Stacy here — and I honestly couldn’t tell you what year I signed up for Amazon Prime because it’s been that long. At this point it’s just part of how our family shops, watches TV, listens to music, and even orders groceries. If you’ve been on the fence about whether Prime is worth it, let me walk you through what we actually use — and a few things that have changed recently that you should know about.
And of course, stacking Prime with the Amazon deals we post is one of the best ways to stretch every dollar even further.
8 Amazon Prime Benefits Worth Knowing About
1. Free 2-Day Shipping — No Minimum, No Limit

This is still the one that makes Prime a no-brainer for me. As an Amazon Prime member, you get free 2-day shipping on hundreds of millions of eligible items with no minimum order. One-day and same-day delivery are also available on qualifying items in many areas.
I especially love it during the holidays — I can skip the crowds, shop from home, and still get gifts fast. The savings on shipping alone can easily cover the cost of membership if you order regularly.
2. Add Items to an Existing Order — This One’s a Game Changer
Okay, this is a newer feature that I am obsessed with. You know how you place an order and then five minutes later remember that one thing you needed? With Prime, you can now add items to an order that hasn’t shipped yet instead of placing a whole separate order. It sounds small but it has saved me so many times. If you haven’t tried it yet, look for the “Add to this delivery” option when you’re checking out.
3. Amazon Fresh Grocery Add-On
Another more recent perk that’s made a real difference for our family: you can add Amazon Fresh grocery items directly to your existing Amazon order (depending on your market). So I can throw household essentials and groceries into the same order. It’s not available everywhere yet, but if it’s in your area it’s incredibly convenient.
4. Early Access to Lightning Deals
Lightning deals are time-limited, limited-quantity offers that go fast. As a Prime member, you get 30-minute early access to select Lightning Deals — which is a real advantage during Prime Day and other major sale events. If you’re serious about snagging deals before they sell out, this perk pays off.
5. Prime Video — Movies, Shows, Live Sports & Family Profiles

Our whole family uses Prime Video constantly. We’re talking Amazon Originals like Fallout, Reacher, The Boys, and The Rings of Power — plus live NFL Thursday Night Football and a huge library of movies and shows.
One thing I really appreciate is that you can set up individual profiles for different family members, so everyone’s watchlist and recommendations stay separate. It makes a real difference when you’ve got kids and adults sharing the same account. See how that works in our post on sharing Amazon Prime with your household.
Heads up on ads: Since early 2024, Prime Video includes limited ads by default on the standard plan. If you want completely ad-free streaming plus 4K/UHD and Dolby Atmos, you can add Prime Video Ultra for $4.99/month (or $45.99/year). The included tier still gets you HD/HDR and the full content library — just with occasional ads.
6. Prime Music
Music is a big one for us. Prime Music gives you access to over 100 million songs completely ad-free — we’ve got it going in the background pretty much all day. It’s included with your membership at no extra cost. If you want full on-demand control over your listening, Prime members get a discount on Amazon Music Unlimited as well.
7. Prime Reading + Amazon First Reads

Prime members get access to thousands of books, magazines, and comics through Prime Reading, readable on any device with the free Kindle app. You also get to pick one free early-release Kindle book per month through Amazon First Reads before it’s available to the public. If you’re a reader, this one adds up fast.
8. Unlimited Photo Storage
Amazon Photos gives you unlimited full-resolution photo storage plus 5GB for videos — all accessible from your phone, computer, or tablet. This is one of the most underrated perks on the list. We use it to back up family photos automatically, and you can share the storage with your household members too.
More Prime Perks Worth Mentioning
- Prime Gaming — free games and in-game loot each month
- Whole Foods discounts — exclusive savings in-store and on delivery
- Grubhub+ — included free with Prime through at least December 2026 (a $120/year value on its own)
- Prime Day access — the biggest members-only sale event of the year, plus Prime Big Deal Days in the fall

What Does Amazon Prime Cost in 2026?
- $139/year (about $11.58/month) — the best value if you shop regularly
- $14.99/month — flexible option if you only need it seasonally
- Ages 18–24: Prime for Young Adults — free 6-month trial, then $7.49/month or $69/year
- SNAP EBT or qualifying assistance: Prime Access — $6.99/month (50% off the regular price)
- Never tried Prime before? Start with a free 30-day trial

I am confused about this though because when you visit the website it looks like you have to purchase shows, etc. For example, New Girl says to buy for $1.99. Does this go away and become free once you have amazon prime?
You can purchase shows if you want to… but the great thing about Prime is when you are signed up you have the option to stream for free. You won’t own them, but you can watch them whenever you want, for free.
thats exactly what i am looking for! i am plannnig to cancel my cable service once my two year contract is up in july and i was planning to switch to just streaming for netflix/hulu plus. the great thing about amazon prime is that i currently have amazon student and i can sign up for prime at half price! also, i make tons of amazon cash from swagbucks so i could pay for my entire year of entertainment quickly. so just to clarify, i can stream a bunch of shows? all of the shows i look at now have a price, but id assume that is because i dont have prime. thanks!!
Everything you see PRIME Eligible For FREE instant Streaming
under this link can be streamed for free!
What are swag bucks?
I’m logged in right now with my Prime account and I still have to pay per show to stream. It definitely is not creepier than Netflix. Netflix lets me stream all my shows with out an additional cost per movie or episode. Amazon Prime does.
So, to watch whenever is $1.99 and the streaming only is free?
Very confusing Becky. It was so much easier when the screen said prime members free.
I have Prime and New Girl wasn’t free for me.
You can watch New Girl on fox.com for free, they only do so many and you have to wait a week for the latest episode. You can also watch pretty much all of nbc’s and cbs’s shows on their websites as well.
There are a number of movies that are not free. Lots of other streamed items are free,
I’ve been with Amazon Prime for a very long time. Recently… most of the show I want to watch cost more money. Not many good movies or TV show I want to watch for free. Very disappointed!
Thats a bummer! It will be interesting to see how Walmart Plus will change things up and give Amazon Prime some big competition!
Which leads to the question, Is Amazon Prime Really Worth It?
Depends on the shows and movies – some are free and others have a fairly small fee.
Some have different prices for a 48-hour window to watch vs. buy the episode that allows you to download or store on site as a part of your video library.
Some tv show seasons would be cheaper to buy the dvd’s vs. paying $1.99 per episode.
You have to do the math.
No. It doesn’t. Some are free, some you have to pay extra.
I have prime, and I love it, but I did not know I could share my free shipping. Thanks for the info!
How do you share your free shipping benefits with friends and family?
Can you stream different movies and/or shows to different tvs using a Roku/Wii/Blue Ray player?
Also the new movies (like We Bought a Zoo) free to stream with Prime?
Thank you.
The new movies like We Bought a Zoo are available for rental for a fee… I added the direct link to the free ones in the post. Sorry about the confusion!
You can watch anywhere–in your living room, online, or on the go. Instant Videos are available for instant streaming on the Kindle Fire, as well as PlayStation 3, PC, Mac, Roku, and hundreds of TVs and Blu-ray players.
According to Amazon, you can stream up to two DIFFERENT movies/tv shows at once using different devices.
“You may stream up to two videos at the same time using the same Amazon.com account. You may stream the same video to no more than one device at a time. ”
I’ve been really impressed with Amazon’s growing library of Prime-eligible content. I ditched cable a few years ago and do not miss it one bit.
Yep!!! i frequently watch on my computer while my hubby or 3 year old is watching something else! (There’s only so much Blue’s Clues I can stand to watch… even with limiting her TV time to 30 minutes per day!)
Can I stream from our Wii?
They don’t list the Wii… This is what they say:
You can watch anywhere–in your living room, online, or on the go. Instant Videos are available for instant streaming on the Kindle Fire, as well as PlayStation 3, PC, Mac, Roku, and hundreds of TVs and Blu-ray players.
You can stream to your Wii. You just need to download the Amazon Instant Video App.
Yep! Since this was originally posted, they added it!
Yes, you can stream from your Wii. You just go to the Wii store and download the Amazon Video app for free.
We just recently signed up and use our wii but the buffering is horrible. We can’t just watch a movie, any suggestions?
I would restart your router, and check your internet speed. We stream through the PS3, but have never noticed a problem.
I love my Amazon Prime but would like more info about the free shipping sharing. I didn’t know we could do this and I would love to know how.
Thanks for sharing all your great info.
Check out all the details on how to Share Your Amazon Prime Benefits
my sister shared her Prime with me. it is only for 30 days. and the email came a week late so it was only 3 weeks then. anyone can try a free 30 day trial so i dont really get the purpose of this sharing with 4 friends or coworkers offer then.
It looks like the Amazon prime can only be shared with four family members living in the same household, or four co-workers shopping from the same account (presumably the same address). Sorry, I just looked at the Amazon website to find out this info.
“You can read it on your Kindle, or from any of your devices with a Kindle App on them!”
Actually, you cannot get the free kindle books with prime membership if you own an iPad with a Kindle app. You can only get them if you use the actual Kindle device. They don’t support the iPad Kindle app, which is a bummer.
Even better than Amazon Mom is a student Amazon Prime account. After the first free year, it only costs $39 with all the benefits with a student .edu email– Its good for 4 years. My husband is a student parttime and I love the benefits.
You had me at “Downton Abbey” 🙂
I thought you couldn’t stream to an XBOX. When we first looked into purchasing Netflix or Prime, it wasn’t able to stream to your xbox – we could only watch on our computers which doesn’t work for us. Has this changed?
YES!!!! They added the xBox 360, and several more devices!
While I love my Amazon Prime account and we frequently (okay, all the time) watch shows with it, I would never give up Netflix. Most of the shows I like are on Netflix and I don’t have to pay, unlike Amazon. A lot of shows on there you have to rent.
BTW, Downton Abbey is also on Hulu, Netflix and PBS. Amazon doesn’t have the exclusive rights to it.
We use a Roku device to stream to our TVs and it works wonderfully! All the ones I mentioned can be streamed.
Can you only stream through a computer? Not sure how to do it through my TV. Can you go through the Wii? Thanks
I am confused by your statement that Amazon Prime Sharing can be used for family members that do not have to be living in the same house. Following your link, it states that they must be in the same household. How can you share with others not in the same household, then?
While the cost of Prime seems to be cheaper on the surface, their library of available streaming items is tiny compared to Netflix and Hulu Plus. We dropped cable quite some time ago and have been happy with a subscription to each. Also, the $79 fee for Amazon Prime only allows you to purchase something on Amazon with free shipping. While they do run sales on occasion, when I’m looking for something specific and not just buying because the price is already low, I rarely ever find the lowest price on Amazon. Another option for free two day shipping is Shoprunner. They cost the same and allow you to use their shipping at multiple locations. I’ve been weighing whether, if I prepaid for expedited shipping, I would go with Amazon Prime or Shoprunner. Right now, I’m leaning towards Shoprunner. Just my two cents. 🙂
Amazon offers more then Netflix and is better business minded.
Hi,
It looks like their policies have changed. It now says that you can share your Prime benefits with up to 4 family members WHO LIVE IN THE SAME HOUSEHOLD. In your description, it says they do not need to live in the same household. Am I missing something, or have their policies recently changed? I’m bummed if they have, but I don’t want to be sharing if I’m not supposed to!
How do I get to the list of prime eligible videos before I sign up for prime?
Thanks
You can see all the Prime Eligible movies here
I am a Amazon Prime Member and — when it comes to the difference between streaming shows on Amazon compared with Netflix — I have been less happy with the options on Amazon than with Netflix. I can’t find much on Amazon that doesn’t cost at least $1.99 (even with Prime). A lot of the shows I am wanting to watch are older shows, but they still cost at least a $1.99 (per episode).
I’m sorry! You should email amazon customer service and tell them what shows you want them to add!! That’s one of the awesome things, is they are always adding content! AND, even if you have Netflix, Hulu and Prime, it’s still cheaper than cable! 😀
Yes, that is true regarding cable! I will try emailing Amazon CS and see what happens. Thanks!
