What Type of Dish to Use in the Air Fryer

When choosing the right dish for your air fryer, the general rule is simple: if it’s oven-safe, it’s usually air fryer-safe too. Look for glass, metal, or silicone that can withstand high heat.

For this recipe, I recommend using a cake pan or an 8×8-inch glass dish, which fit nicely in most air fryer baskets and allow for even cooking. If you have a silicone air fryer pot, that’s another excellent option—it’s easy to clean and great for handling sticky or creamy dishes like this casserole. Just make sure whatever you use fits comfortably in your air fryer without restricting airflow for the best results!

How to Make Creamy Baked Green Beans in the Air Fryer

Step 1: Create the Sauce

Start by mixing the cream of mushroom soup with the milk and soy sauce in a large mixing bowl.

Step 2: Add the Beans and Fried Onions

Drain the green beans from the can and mix them into the sauce until they are completely coated in the soup mixture. Add a ⅔ cup of the fried onions and then pour the mixture into the oven-safe dish to use in the air fryer.

Step 3: Air Fry

Now, place the bean-filled dish into the air fryer basket and place it inside the air fryer.

Turn the air fryer on to 350°F (175°C) and let the casserole bake for 8 minutes or until the top starts to roast.

Step 4: Add Fried Onion Topping

When the time is up, open the air fryer, sprinkle on the remaining onions, and let the beans cook for another 2 minutes. When the timer is up, carefully remove the dish from the air fryer basket and serve your baked beans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use fresh or frozen green beans instead of canned?

Yes! Here are a few adjustments to make when using different green beans:

  • Fresh green beans:
    • Preparation: Trim the ends and cut them into bite-sized pieces, if needed.
    • Cooking: Blanch the green beans in boiling water for 3-5 minutes, then transfer them to an ice bath to stop the cooking process. This step softens the beans and ensures they’re tender in the final dish.
    • Adjustments: Fresh beans might require slightly more liquid in the casserole mixture, as they won’t release as much water as canned beans.
  • Frozen green beans:
    • Preparation: Thaw the green beans and pat them dry with a kitchen towel to remove excess moisture.
    • Cooking: No pre-cooking is needed, but you may want to extend the cooking time by a couple of minutes to ensure they’re tender.
    • Adjustments: Like fresh beans, frozen ones may require a bit more liquid in the recipe since they’re less water-logged than canned.

Can green bean casserole be reheated?

If you have leftovers of your baked green bean casserole, you can always reheat it in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for about 6-8 minutes.

I always suggest using the air fryer to prevent the fried onions from getting soggy in the microwave.
