How can you tell when they are done?

When you think the cheese burger onion rings might be done, the best way to make sure they are truly done is to test them with an instant read thermometer

The ideal internal temperature for this recipe is about 160 degrees F or 71 degrees C to make sure it is safe to consume.

Center options

For this onion ring recipe, you will use cheese as the filling. Normally we use cheddar cheese that is cut into squares (or you can speed it up and buy the cube blocks of cheese that are normally for snacking).

But, if you want you can either use a different kind of cheese or even multiple types of cheese.

Here are a few great options:

  • Pepper jack
  • Mozzarella
  • Swiss
  • Provolone
  • White cheddar

How to Make Air Fryer Cheese Burger Onion Rings:

Step 1: Make the burger meat mixture

In a bowl, start by mixing together the ground beef, salt, pepper, and onion powder until it is well combined.

Step 2: Prepare the onions

Peel and slice the onion into 1-centimeter (½ inch) rings. Detach the rings from each other.

Step 3: Build the cheese burger

Take a spoonful of the beef mixture and press it into the bottom of an onion ring.

After you have the bottom beef portion in place, push a cheddar square into the center of the beef.

Now, seal the top with another spoonful of the beef over top of the cheese and press it flat.

When you are done with one, repeat these same steps with the rest of the onion rings.

Step 4: Batter the onion ring

To start place the flour, eggs, and bread crumbs into three separate bowls.

When everything is set up dip one ring at a time into the flour, shaking off excess, then into the egg, the bread crumbs.

Repeat the same steps with the remaining prepared rings.

Step 5: Fry the cheese burger onion rings

After you are done dipping the onions in Panko bread crumbs mixture, place them in the air fryer basket, and spray each one with oil.

Then, air fry the rings for 12 minutes at 350 degrees F or 177 degrees C.

Check the internal temp, flip the rings, spray with oil once more.

Then continue to cook the onion rings at 400 degrees F or 200 degrees C for an additional 3-4 minutes or until cooked thru (reaching an internal temperature of 160 degrees F or 71 degrees C) and are golden-brown.

Now, remove the cooked onion rings and serve them with ketchup!
