Air Fryer French Toast Sticks (Crispy, Easy, Homemade)
Air Fryer French Toast Sticks
Crispy Homemade French Toast Sticks in the Air Fryer
If you want an easy breakfast that feels fun enough for weekends but simple enough for busy mornings, these air fryer French toast sticks are such a good one to keep on repeat. They turn out crispy on the outside, soft in the middle, and perfect for dipping in maple syrup, whipped cream, or even a little jam.
These are homemade French toast sticks, not the frozen kind, so you get that rich vanilla-cinnamon flavor and soft custardy center without heating up the oven. I like using thick Texas toast because it holds up well in the egg mixture and gives you that classic French toast stick texture.
They are also freezer-friendly, kid-friendly, and easy to customize with your favorite milk or toppings. Whether you are making breakfast for the family or breakfast-for-dinner, this is one of those recipes that disappears fast.

The Best Bread for French Toast Sticks
The best bread for air fryer French toast sticks is a thick-cut bread that can hold up to the custard without falling apart. Texas toast is one of my favorite options because it is sturdy, soft, and gives you those thick diner-style sticks.
You can also use brioche, challah, or another hearty white bread. If your bread feels very fresh and soft, let it dry out a bit first. That small step helps the bread soak up flavor without becoming soggy.
How to Make Air Fryer French Toast Sticks
Step 1: Mix the custard
Combine the milk, melted butter, egg yolks, brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla in a bowl. Whisk until smooth and well combined.
Step 2: Prep the bread
Cut your bread into sticks. For the best texture, pre-dry the bread in the air fryer for about 2 minutes at 350°F. Then dip each bread stick into the custard mixture. You want it coated, but not soaking so long that it turns mushy.
Step 3: Air fry
Arrange the sticks in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Cook at 350°F for about 8 minutes, flipping halfway through.
If you want them crispier, add another 1 to 2 minutes. Keep an eye on them near the end since air fryers can cook differently depending on size, wattage, and how thick your bread is cut.
Step 4: Add optional topping
Right after cooking, sprinkle them with cinnamon sugar if you want a sweeter finish. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
Tips for Crispy Air Fryer French Toast Sticks
The easiest way to get crispy French toast sticks instead of soggy ones is to dry the bread just a little before dipping. A quick 2-minute pre-toast in the air fryer helps a lot.
- Use thick bread, not thin sandwich bread
- Do not oversoak the bread in the custard
- Cook in a single layer for best airflow
- Flip halfway through for even browning
- Add 1 to 2 extra minutes if you want extra crisp edges
If you want easier cleanup, you can use perforated air fryer parchment paper, but make sure it is properly weighed down by food before the air fryer is running.
Frozen vs. Homemade French Toast Sticks in the Air Fryer
A lot of people search air fryer French toast sticks when they actually mean the frozen kind from the store, so it helps to know the difference.
Frozen French toast sticks are great for convenience and usually cook faster because they are already prepared. Homemade air fryer French toast sticks, though, have better flavor, a softer center, and more flexibility for ingredients and toppings.
If you are here looking for the homemade version, this recipe is the one you want. If you have frozen sticks on hand, check the package directions first, then use your air fryer to heat them until hot and crisp. Frozen brands vary, so timing can differ more than with homemade sticks.
How to Freeze and Reheat French Toast Sticks
These freeze beautifully, which makes them a great meal prep breakfast.
- Dip the bread sticks in the custard
- Lay them on a parchment-lined tray in a single layer
- Freeze until solid
- Transfer to a freezer bag or airtight container
To reheat, place the frozen French toast sticks in the air fryer and cook until heated through and crisp again. You can also reheat leftovers from the fridge the same way.

The BEST Air Fryer French Toast Sticks
Equipment
Ingredients
- 12 thick slices hearty white sandwich bread I used Texas Toast
- 1 ½ cups whole milk warmed slightly
- 4 tbsp butter melted
- 3 large egg yolks
- 3-4 tablespoons brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Cut your bread into thirds and place sticks in a single layer in the air fryer at 350˚F/177˚C for 2 minutes. This will dry your bread out just enough so that you won’t have soggy bread sticks.

- Add 3 egg yolks and mix together with an immersion blender, fork, or whisk. Because I used my immersion blender, I put my mixture in a 4-cup measuring cup to safely mix
- Mix in vanilla, cinnamon, and brown sugar
- Pour mixture into a shallow glass dish
- Grab your bread sticks, place into batter and flip around
- Place in a single layer into air fryer
- Sprinkle more cinnamon and sugar if desired
- Cook at 350˚F/177˚C for 8 minutes, flipping the sticks halfway through.
