Bones & Blood Breadsticks Halloween Recipe
Fun Halloween Recipe: Bones & Blood Breadsticks!
This is my favorite breadstick recipe because it only takes about an hour from start to finish and they are delicious! For a fun Halloween spin, make them into a bone shape and serve with red sauce – Bones & Blood Breadsticks Halloween Recipe!
The ingredients are simple and the recipe is easy. These are the breadsticks I usually make any time I want to serve breadsticks with a meal, just not usually in “bone” shapes! You can start making them about an hour before serving, or make them earlier in the day and refrigerate until an hour before serving.
The dough may seem dry at first, but once you start kneading it comes together nicely and actually ends up being quite a sticky dough.
I usually just knead by hand right in the mixing bowl, but you can try using a mixer with a dough hook too. The only rising necessary is 10 minutes after kneading, then 10-15 minutes after shaping and placing on the baking sheet.
To make the bone shape, cut the dough into strips and split the ends of each breadstick in half. Use scissors to easily cut each end, then roll each end piece outward and down to form the end of the bone.
I started out making these the same way I make the regular breadsticks, but quickly realized that these bone breadsticks lose some of the shape if you roll them around. So, it is better to just brush melted butter onto the pan, then brush the tops of the breadsticks with butter as well.
I have to admit, my husband thinks they looks like doggy biscuits. BUT my kids quickly recognized them as bones though! 😉 A great option to go with Halloween dinner, especially soup!

Bones & Blood Breadsticks Halloween Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon yeast
- 1 ½ cup warm water
- 3 ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4-1/3 cup butter
- Parmesan cheese
- garlic salt and onion powder
Instructions
- Dissolve the yeast in the warm water. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture and stir together.
- Knead for 3 minutes and let rest for 10 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F/190°C. Melt the butter and spread half of it onto a baking sheet.
- Roll the dough out on a work surface into a rectangle, about the size of the baking sheet. Then use a pizza cutter to cut the dough into one-inch-wide strips. Split the ends of each strip of dough in half, make the cuts about 1-inch long. Then roll each end piece outward to make the end of the "bone." Place each breadstick on the buttered pan and brush the tops of the breadsticks with the remaining melted butter.
- Sprinkle with garlic salt, onion powder, and Parmesan cheese. Don’t be skimpy with the Parmesan. (There are lots of seasoning combinations that would be great!)
- Let rise for 10-15 minutes.
- Bake for about 20 minutes, until edges begin to turn golden brown.
