Why I Love Cooking Sweet Potatoes in the Air Fryer
I loving baking and cooking in my air fryer because it’s much quicker than baking in my oven. Plus, an air fryer is essentially a convection oven, but it uses air to fry and cook your foods. I love this because it is healthier and takes very little space in my kitchen.
I have 2 air fryers, the Philips XXL and Cosori 5.8qt. And the Cosori is, hands down, my favorite! Read my full air fryer review and buying guide to learn more about the type of air fryer you should get!
How to store sweet potatoes:
After you are done cooking the sweet potatoes, place them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4-5 days for the best results.
Toppings for Sweet Potatoes:
Sweet potatoes are pretty versatile which makes them such a great side dish. Here ar ea few suggestions for how to top your sweet potato.
- Butter
- Salt
- Black pepper
- Green onions
- Chopped bacon
- Cinnamon
- Brown sugar
- Marshmallows (for a less healthier option, or healthier dessert depending on how you want to look at it)
How to Make Sweet Potatoes in Air Fryer
Step 1: Prep the potatoes
First, wash and scrub your sweet potatoes so they are clean and free from dirt, and then pierce your potatoes with a fork, 4-5 times
Step 2: Season sweet potatoes
Place potatoes in the air fryer basket and spray with avocado oil. You do not want to use an aerosol spray oil, this can ruin your air fryer. Massage oil into the sweet potatoes.
Sprinkle and rub in kosher salt
Step 3: Bake sweet potatoes
Bake the sweet potatoes anywhere from 375°F-400°F (I did 380°F) or 190°C-204°C for 40 minutes. At the halfway point, carefully flip the potatoes over.
Step 4: Test the potatoes
After they finish cooking, give your sweet potatoes a squeeze. If your potatoes need more time, add a couple of minutes until they are cooked to your desired tenderness. The cooking time really depends on the size of your potatoes, so you will just have to watch it carefully.
Step 5: Topping the sweet potatoes
Once the potatoes are tender, carefully remove them from the air fryer and slice the potato part of the way down the center to open it up.
Then top it with a couple tablespoons of butter and you are good to go!
Important Tips
As I mentioned before, the cooking time will depend greatly on the manufacturer of your air fryer and the size of your potatoes. So, just keep an eye on your potatoes, and pull them out when you think they are ready!
If you are cooking sweet potatoes for multiple people, remember to not overcrowd your basket. Leave room for air to flow, so that your sweet potatoes can bake!

I cook baked potatoes in my Air Fryer all the time and they are great on the air crisp (air fryer). For this, you say use the Air Fryer, but bake them? My air fryer bakes and air fries, which do you do bake, or air fry? I have the Ninja XL Grill that bakes, air fries among other things.
My air fryer doesn’t have the other options like yours does, so I think you’re fine on the “air crisp” setting, if that’s working great for your baked potatoes! It should work the exact same for these sweet potatoes!
I needed a baked sweet potato to mix into a recipe for sweet potato dinner rolls. It was so easy to cook this way; very happy with the outcome!
YAY, we are so happy. Thanks for the nice rating, Louise! P.S. How were those rolls??
Do you have to preheat the air fryer first for this sweet potato recipe?
Thank You!
Hi Donna, nope you don’t need to preheat!
