Love books but never seem to have enough quiet time to actually sit down and read? Same. Audiobooks are one of my favorite ways to fit more books into real life because I can listen while driving, walking, cooking dinner, folding laundry, cleaning the kitchen, or doing all those little jobs that do not require my full attention.

If you have been curious about audiobooks, an Audible free trial is an easy way to see whether you will actually use a membership before paying for one.

How Does the Audible Free Trial Work?

Audible is Amazon’s audiobook and audio entertainment service. You can listen through the Audible app on your phone or tablet, download titles for offline listening, and use Audible on a variety of compatible devices.

For eligible new members, Audible currently offers a 30-day free trial. During the trial, you receive the benefits included with the membership option you choose.

When the free trial ends, your membership automatically continues at the regular monthly price unless you cancel.

My tip: Set a reminder on your phone the day you sign up. A free trial is only a deal if you remember to decide whether you actually want to keep it before the paid membership begins.

Audible Standard vs. Audible Premium: What’s the Difference?

Audible currently has two primary monthly membership options: Audible Standard and Audible Premium.

If you have used Audible in the past, Premium may sound unfamiliar. It is the plan previously called Audible Premium Plus, and you may still see the older Premium Plus name in some places while Audible updates its site and help pages.

Audible Standard – $8.99/Month

Audible Standard is the less expensive option and may be a good fit if you generally listen to about one audiobook each month.

With Audible Standard you can:

• Select one audiobook each month from Audible’s collection.
• Listen to your selected audiobook for as long as your membership remains active.
• Download your selected audiobook for offline listening.
• Listen to a curated selection of Audible Originals and audio shows included with Standard.
• Purchase additional audiobooks separately if you want more than your monthly selection.

There are two important things to know about Standard.

First, unused monthly selections do not roll over. If you forget to pick a book one month, you do not get two selections the following month.

Second, your Standard selections are available while you have an active Audible membership. They do not work the same way as books purchased with Premium credits.

Audible Premium – $14.95/Month

Audible Premium, formerly known as Premium Plus, is the plan longtime Audible users are probably most familiar with.

The regular one-credit Premium membership includes:

• One credit each month that can be redeemed for an audiobook from Audible’s collection.
• Audiobooks purchased with credits are yours to keep, even if you later cancel Audible.
• Unlimited listening to thousands of audiobooks, Audible Originals, podcasts, and other titles in Audible’s included catalog.
• Access to Premium member sales and discounts on additional audiobook purchases.

Audible also offers additional Premium options, including plans with more credits and annual memberships.

Which Audible Plan Is Better?

The answer really depends on how you listen.

Audible Standard may make more sense if:

• You usually listen to about one audiobook per month.
• You want the lowest-cost monthly Audible option.
• You do not care about permanently owning each monthly selection.

Audible Premium may make more sense if:

• You listen to audiobooks frequently.
• You want access to Audible’s larger included catalog.
• You want to use credits to build a library of audiobooks you keep.
• You take advantage of Audible member sales and discounts.

New: What Is Audible Rewards?

Audible has also introduced a new Audible Rewards program for members.

You do need to enroll in Audible Rewards, so if you already have an Audible membership, it is worth checking your account rather than assuming you are automatically participating.

Once enrolled, Audible counts your listening days. A listening day is any day when you listen for at least five minutes.

As you accumulate listening days, you can unlock benefits such as:

• Audiobook discount coupons
• Special member sales and offers
• Listening challenges
• Limited-time promotions
• Other rewards based on your listening level

You can even start accumulating listening activity during a free trial, although anniversary rewards require 12 paid months of membership.

Audible Anniversary Rewards

After 12 paid months, Audible currently offers an annual anniversary gift based on your membership:

• Premium members: One free credit
• Standard members: One free monthly listen

If you are already paying for Audible anyway, I definitely like the idea of getting something extra just for using the service you already have.

What Should You Listen to on Audible?

This is the fun part.

One of the biggest benefits of Audible is the sheer number of choices. You can find bestselling fiction, romance, historical fiction, mysteries, thrillers, memoirs, personal development, classics, children’s books, fantasy, science fiction, full-cast productions, Audible Originals, and podcasts.

If that sounds a little overwhelming, here are some ideas depending on what you like to read.

If You Love Jane Austen and Historical Fiction

If you would happily spend another few hundred pages with the Bennet family, start with The Other Bennet Sister by Janice Hadlow.

This one tells the story of Mary Bennet, the quiet and frequently overlooked middle sister from Pride and Prejudice. It begins with familiar events from Mary’s point of view and then imagines what happens as she begins creating a life of her own.

It is an especially fun time to discover the book because The Other Bennet Sister has received renewed attention with its television adaptation.

Another fun Regency option is A Lady’s Guide to Fortune-Hunting by Sophie Irwin. Kitty Talbot needs to find a wealthy husband quickly to save her family, but naturally things become more complicated once someone sees straight through her plan.

And, of course, you can always go directly to Jane Austen. Audible has multiple audiobook editions of classics including:

The series follows Emma M. Lion beginning in 1883 as she returns to her London neighborhood of St. Crispian’s and records the ridiculous, inconvenient, and often hilarious things happening around her.

If you like Jane Austen, L.M. Montgomery, P.G. Wodehouse, or witty historical stories with eccentric characters, this one is worth putting on your list.

Even better, there are multiple volumes, so if you fall in love with Emma’s world, you do not have to leave after one audiobook.

Looking for Clean or Low-Spice Romance Audiobooks?

If you love romance but prefer cleaner, sweeter, or lower-spice love stories, Audible has plenty of options there too.

Of course, everyone has a slightly different definition of “clean,” so I always recommend checking the description and reader reviews if there is specific content you prefer to avoid.

Edenbrooke by Julianne Donaldson

Edenbrooke has become a favorite among readers looking for a sweet historical romance. Marianne Daventry escapes Bath for a visit to the beautiful Edenbrooke estate, where her plans for a peaceful summer naturally become much more complicated.

If you enjoy Regency settings, banter, misunderstandings, and plenty of romantic tension without needing a steamy storyline, put this one on your list.

Blackmoore by Julianne Donaldson

If you enjoy Edenbrooke, try Donaldson’s Blackmoore next.

Set in 1820s England, it follows Kate Worthington, who has no intention of marrying and dreams instead of traveling to India. Her mother’s condition for allowing her to go sets up a romantic story involving friendship, family expectations, and the question of what Kate actually wants for herself.

Sarah M. Eden

Sarah M. Eden is another author worth searching if you enjoy sweet historical romance.

Some titles to look for include:

• Seeking Persephone
• The Kiss of a Stranger
• Friends and Foes
• Romancing Daphne
• For Elise
• Wyoming Wild

She has written a large number of historical romances, including books in the Proper Romance collections, which makes her a great author to explore if you find one you enjoy.

Beyond Ivy Walls by Rachel Fordham

For something a little different, Beyond Ivy Walls is a sweet historical romance inspired by Beauty and the Beast and set in Iowa in 1903.

It combines romance with family secrets and a little mystery, and the audiobook describes itself as a low-spice, slow-burn romance.

Rachel Fordham has several historical romances available in audio, so she is another author worth exploring if this is your favorite kind of book.

For a Feel-Good Contemporary Romance

If you prefer modern stories, Katherine Center is another author worth searching on Audible.

Her 2026 novel The Shippers centers around a destination wedding on a cruise ship, childhood friends, and a plan for one woman to finally fix her love life.

You might also recognize:

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir has become a huge audiobook favorite, particularly because narration plays such an important role in the experience.

Fantasy fans might want to check out the Dungeon Crawler Carl series by Matt Dinniman, which has built an enormous audiobook following.

You can also use your trial to try a fantasy series you have been hesitant to start because sometimes listening to a long series feels a lot less intimidating than staring at six giant books on the shelf.

Audiobooks are also one of my favorite formats for nonfiction because you can listen while doing something else.

Memoirs can be particularly good in audio when they are narrated by the author. Hearing someone tell their own story can make the experience feel much more personal than reading the same words on a page.

Audiobooks for Kids and Families

Audiobooks are also fantastic for road trips, quiet time, or kids who love stories but are reluctant independent readers.

My daughter has enjoyed Bridge to Bat City.

You can also search Audible for children’s classics, middle-grade adventures, fantasy series, and full-cast productions. Listening together in the car is an easy way to turn an audiobook into something the whole family enjoys.

One of My Own Audible Favorites

I have also enjoyed The Echo of Old Books by Barbara Davis.

And that is one reason I like using an Audible trial to explore. You can choose the bestseller everyone is talking about, revisit a classic, try an author you have never read before, or pick something completely outside your normal genre.

Can I listen to Audible offline?

Does Amazon Prime include Audible?

A regular Amazon Prime membership does not automatically include a full Audible membership.
