1. Little Monsters (1989)
Why it’s a great pick: A cult classic from the late ’80s! A young boy discovers that his new best friend is a monster who lives under his bed, and he gets introduced to the wild world that exists beneath every child’s bed. It’s a fun, zany adventure with a great Howie Mandel performance and fantastic practical monster effects.
Scare Factor: Low (The monster world is more chaotic and colorful than scary).
2. Beetlejuice (1988)
Why it’s a great pick: A quintessential ’80s spooky comedy from Tim Burton. It’s macabre and eccentric, but often more funny than scary, with Michael Keaton delivering an iconic, hilarious performance as the “bio-exorcist” Beetlejuice. It’s a great pick for older kids and teens.
3. The Spiderwick Chronicles
Why it’s a great pick: After moving into a creepy old estate, the Grace children discover a field guide to the fantastical world of faeries and other creatures that exist all around them. It’s a thrilling fantasy adventure with great creature design and a sense of genuine danger that will keep the whole family engaged.
Scare Factor: Medium (Some of the faerie creatures, like the ogre Mulgarath, can be frightening).
4. ParaNorman (2012)
Why it’s a great pick: From the same studio as Coraline, this is another brilliant stop-motion film that celebrates the spooky and the misunderstood. It deals with themes of bullying, empathy, and courage in the face of a zombie uprising.
Scare Level: Medium. It has some creepy moments and zombie imagery, but its core message is about understanding and acceptance.
5. The Addams Family (1991)
Why it’s a great pick: The spookiest, kookiest, and most loving family on the block! This live-action adaptation is a hilarious and stylish comedy about family values—just with a macabre twist. Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston are perfect as Gomez and Morticia.
Scare Level: Very Low. The scares are all in good, gothic fun. The real frights are reserved for the “normal” people who don’t understand them.
6. Hotel Transylvania (2012)
Why it’s a great pick: A monster-filled animated romp where Dracula runs a resort for his fellow creatures. It’s fast-paced, packed with jokes for kids and adults, and has a sweet father-daughter story at its center.
Scare Level: Very Low. The monsters are all friendly and comical, designed to be more cute than creepy.
7. Scared Shrekless (2010)
Why it’s a great pick: A perfect, short (under 30 minutes) Halloween special for a quick dose of fun. Shrek challenges his friends to spend the night in Lord Farquaad’s haunted castle and tell scary stories.
Scare Level: Very Low. It’s a parody of classic horror tropes, played entirely for laughs with characters you already know and love.
8. Frankenweenie (2012)
Why it’s a great pick: Tim Burton’s black-and-white, stop-motion feature-length expansion of his own short film is a heartfelt homage to classic monster movies. After his dog, Sparky, dies, a young Victor Frankenstein uses science to bring him back to life. It’s a touching story about love and loss, wrapped in a spooky, suburban setting.
Scare Factor: Low to Medium (The resurrection and some angry townsfolk provide mild tension).
9. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Why it’s a great pick: Is it a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie? The answer is yes! Tim Burton’s iconic stop-motion musical is a visual and auditory feast. Jack Skellington’s journey of self-discovery is a timeless tale for any time between October and December.
Scare Level: Low to Medium. The Halloween Town characters are designed to be creepy, but the musical numbers and gothic charm make it more whimsical than frightening.
10. Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005)
Why it’s a great pick: From the geniuses at Aardman Animations, this is a brilliant, pun-filled, stop-motion comedy. Wallace and Gromit must solve the mystery of a giant vegetable-eating beast terrorizing the town’s prized gardens before the annual Giant Vegetable Competition.
Scare Level: Very Low. The “Were-Rabbit” is more silly than scary, and the film is packed with clever British humor for all ages.
