How To Make Your Strawberries Last Longer!

Make your strawberries last for weeks instead of days using this tip!

Strawberries

I stocked up on strawberries early last week at WinCo.  They have their strawberries on sale for $1.48 for a 2lb package.  I saw this tip on making your strawberries last longer (I can’t even remember where now) but I tried it and this bunch of strawberries lasted for almost two WEEKS in the fridge after using this soak on them!  It is really easy, all you need are strawberries, vinegar and water!  *Note* this will work on any type of  berries.

Strawberrry Soak Ingredients fab frug

Mix one part vinegar with 10 parts water.  I used 5 cups water to 1/2 cup vinegar.  The vinegar kills the mold spores that are already growing on the berries so  it lengthens the shelf life!

Strawberries Soaking fab frug

I soaked them for 2 minutes and drained them.

Strawberries drain fab frug

I suppose you could rinse them with water but I didn’t.  There was absolutely no hint of a vinegar taste at all!

Strawberries Store in Container fab frug

I washed out the original container and stored them back in it because it has nice ventilation.   I am sure you could use any container.

Store them in the refrigerator or a cool location.

The Best Rewards Credit Cards 2013

Find the Best Rewards Credit Card for You!

best reward credit cards

I think it’s safe to say we all know that credit card debt is bad, really bad. And props go out to all you people that don’t use credit cards! Check out the awesome Cash Envelope System here.

Credit cards can be very useful for some of us though. Help build and improve credit (although not necessary), maximize savings by offering rewards, arrange traveling accommodations, limit your exposure to fraud, track your spending, extending warranties and other benefits.

To find a rewarding credit card that makes sense for you: weigh the rewards formulas, fees, and restrictions, along with your spending habits. Take the time to read the fine print of the credit card offer too. You may find a few features that are valuable and could save you some money and you may also find catches like seasonal savings, spending tiers, hidden caps, rewards expiration dates, and penalties.

calculator and money

If you have existing debt, tend to carry a credit card balance, or bad credit you should probably consider credit cards with low interest rates and low fees (rather than focusing on rewards programs) or cut out credit cards all together!

I personally use a credit card for almost everything. BUT I always pay my balance in full and I keep my spending under control too. Then I redeem my earned points for gift cards to places I normally shop, like Amazon or Target. I basically utilize the same credit card method that Amber talks about here. This system DOES NOT work for everyone though.

Best Credit Cards for Rewards

If you have …

Excellent credit.

Great Memory Idea for the First Day of School Picture!

How cute is this? First Day of School Memory Board!

You just need a Dry Erase Board. Then write your child’s name, the year for school, their grade, teacher, and what they want to be when they grow up. This way as they grow and change over the years you can remember a little bit more about what they loved at specific grades. I wish I would have started this years ago!

Tips For Saving on School Clothes

Take an inventory- Look through each childs closet and see what they have that still fits. Move out the clothing that no longer fits. Then decide exactly which articles of clothing are needed.

Set a budget- How much are you going to spend?  It is easy to spend twice as much if you do not have a budget in mind. Use price points and your inventory to set a budget. If you need 3 pair of pants and you have a price point of $10 each set a pant budget for $30. If you need 5 shirts and your price point is $5 then add $25 to the budget. Your total budget would be $55 and you could spend a little more on shirts if you were able to score a fab deal on pants. Allow a little wiggle room. Add $10-$20 for a luxury item or the unexpected. But DO NOT EXCEED THE BUDGET. Luxury spending allowance should be set ahead of time so spending does not get out of control.

Know you price points- I always have price points when I shop for clothing. I will don’t like to pay more than $20 for a pair of jeans. This is easier than you think because Target often offers jeans for under $20 with free shipping. I will splurge at $30 if the cut or quality is exceptional. I try to stick to around $15 or less for shirts or blouses. For my kids I stick to around $10 for jeans and try to get shirts for around $5.

Shop out of season- When summer clothes go on clearance stock up for next year. You can easily save 75% by planning ahead for the next year.

Look for Clearance- Clearance racks are always there. Be sure to check them for good deals.

Yard Sales- If you live in an area that holds yard sales you can save around 90% on clothing that you buy.

Thrift Stores and Consignment- Shop your local thrift store when they have specials. Find out when they stock with new clothing so you can pick from the newest items. Thrift store shopping takes patience, but can really pay off.

Look for coupons- We love shopping at FRed Meyer. In addition to their low prices they offer 15% off coupons most week in the store ad.
SIgn up for the mailing list of your favorite retailers so you can get alerts of sales or exclusive coupons by email.

Budgeting for Teens- Don’t tell your teen you are giving them a budget, Budget sounds too restrictive. Tell your team they are getting a clothing allowance. An allowance will help your teen feel empowered rather than restricted.

Involve your Teen- ENcourage your teen to search on social networks like facebook and twitter for coupons at their favorite retailers. If they have to have name brand clothing at least they can have it for less.

Never Pay Full Price- Most every clothing item that enters a store will go on sale at one time or another. Get to know your stores sale cycle. Ask store managers when certain items are going to go on sale.

Don’t Forget to Shop Online- Shopping online will save you money on gas, will save you time and will keep you from having to buy overpriced generally unhealthy food when you are out and about.

Here is a list of places we like to shop online…

Money Saving Tips: Watering Plants

Are you looking for some simple ideas to save money? We have simple solutions that you can easily apply to your lifestyle to save money!

For those who love to garden and save money, here are some tips to use to get the best results in your garden and in your pocket book.

1. Water at night or in the morning before the sun comes up or after the sun goes down.  This helps the vegetation to soak in the water before the sun can evaporate it.

2. Keep the soil from drying out.  That’s a great rule of thumb for most plant watering.  On inch of water per week is also a good gauge.

3. Water plants at the base.  Plants take in water through their root system, so the closer you water to it, the more efficiently the plant will take in water with minimal evaporation.

Money Saving Tip: Save Gas

Are you looking for some simple ideas to save money? We have simple solutions that you can easily apply to your lifestyle to save money!

Here’s an easy way to save on gas…planning.  How many times do you run to the grocery store to quickly pick up something you forgot?  I am so guilty of this, but with gas prices always rising, I have decided to be more conscious of the gas I use.  So how am I doing it?

I’m starting with a few simple tricks that add up over time.

Don’t make any unnecessary trips out of the house.

The extra trip means you’re spending extra gas and therefore extra money.

Plan other useful errands you can run that are on the way or in the same area of your destination.  This way you make your trip worth the gas.

Get organized. Make sure you take everything with you when you leave the house to go somewhere so you’re not temped to “swing” back home if you forgot something. All that “swinging back home” can add up.
