Hibachi Style Chicken with Yum Yum Sauce in the Air Fryer
Have You Tried this Hibachi Style Chicken in the Air Fryer?
Today, I am excited to share with you how to make hibachi style chicken in the air fryer. This recipe was inspired by a TikTok video, and my friend, Kristin, and I tried it out in this video. It was so good! While we aren’t cooking this chicken on an authentic hibachi grill, I promise it’s super good in the air fryer!
Ingredients You Need for Hibachi Chicken
This recipe can be prepped and ready in just 30 minutes! The ingredients are simple and the flavors are rich! For the chicken and vegetables, you will need:
- 2 raw chicken breast cut into bite sized pieces
- 1 small onion cut into slices
- 8 oz of mushrooms cut into fourths
- 2 small zucchini cut into bite sized pieces
- 1/2 tsp of ground ginger
- 1/4 tsp of black pepper
- 1 TBS of garlic powder
- 1/4 cup of soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
Before you begin cooking the chicken and vegetables in the air fryer, make sure all the vegetables are cut into their appropriate size. This will make cooking it so much quicker in the air fryer!
How to Make Hibachi Style Chicken in the Air Fryer
Once you have all the ingredients prepped and ready, preheat the air fryer to 400°F/204°C for 5 minutes. Next, toss the chicken and vegetables with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and the seasonings (ground ginger, black pepper, garlic powder, and soy sauce).
Place the seasoned chicken and vegetables in the preheated air fryer basket. Layer everything inside the basket and cook at 380°F/193°C for 15 minutes.
Be sure to stir the ingredients and check the chicken at the halfway point. I discovered that I didn’t need to cook the chicken much longer. How much longer the chicken needs to cook depends on the make and model of your air fryer, that’s why it is important to have an instant read thermometer to help you gauge the cooking time.
When your chicken reaches the safe temperature of 165°F/74°C, take the chicken and vegetables out of the air fryer basket and enjoy with the yum yum sauce!
How to Make Yum Yum Sauce
A friend once told me that if a food has yum yum sauce in it, you know it will be good. And, oh boy! This homemade yum yum sauce did not disappoint! To make the yum yum sauce for your air fryer hibachi style chicken, you will need:
- 1 Cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 Cup of Water
- 1 teaspoon tomato paste (or ketchup)
- 1 tablespoon melted butter
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
Simply add all the ingredients together in a bowl and mix until well combined. Yes! It’s that easy! You will love the tasty, creamy, garlic flavors of this homemade yum yum sauce. Especially with the hibachi chicken you just made!

Loved this recipe! Zucchini is out on our diet, so I substituted a bag of frozen cauliflower and broccoli. I thawed it first. and patted it dry. This is an easy “1-basket meal” and the Yum Yum sauce made a big hit.
YES! So glad you enjoyed it! Way to modify too! 🙂
Absolutely delicious. Made minor substitutions due to diet. Used chicken tenders, bag of frozen broccoli and cauliflower, coconut aminos instead of soy. And the Yum Yum sauce is really yum yum. Passed recipe to a friend.
Thanks, June! So glad you were able to make this recipe work for you!
We loved this recipe so much that I made it twice this week and shared it with some friends ❤️
Thank you for the review, Renee! I’m so glad you loved it!
This was the very first recipe I made in my very first air fryer. It was an absolute hit! I did not use onion because it does not agree with me. We all decided pineapple would be added next time as we love grilled pineapple. I served with white rice and some store bought sushi. All of our plates were empty and our bellies full. Guess what lunch is tomorrow 😁
Hi Daphne — Thanks for the feedback, and for those ideas. Pineapple sounds like a fantastic addition. Enjoy lunch — leftovers are the bomb.
Looks good. Can you use boneless skinless thighs instead of breasts?
You sure can. You may have to adjust the time a bit.
Amazing meal. Followed the instructions completely and it turned out so delicious! Ended up cooking the full 15 min on the ninja foodi, after I removed the food from the basket I also poured over the liquid from the bottom of the pan on top. We ended up having using roughly half of the sauce, which wasn’t a problem because we had the ingredients to just make another batch of food, though next time I’ll just half the sauce. Thank you for the recipe!
Thanks for the great review, Muz. I am so glad this one turned out great for you!
Really amazing recipe and so easy.
Thanks for the positive feedback and review, Julie. Glad you loved this one!
This was delicious and a hit to the entire family! Made fried rice with egg and vegetables. Poured the delicious Yum Yum over everything. Family gave it a 10/10! Recipe is going down in the books…thank you!
Yay! So glad everyone loved it, Amanda!
