air fried custard toast

I love to try different recipes for breakfast so when I got wind of the TikTok custard toast, I had to try it with our spin on it, and of course in the air fryer! When I tried it, my tastebuds felt like they had died and gone to breakfast dessert heaven.

I know when you find those recipes on TikTok they aren’t always what they are made up to be, but I promise you, our version is! Make sure this is the recipe you try for the air fryer.

Ingredients and Supplies Needed For Air Fryer Custard Toast

Ingredients:

  • White bread slices
  • Greek yogurt
  • Egg
  • Honey
  • Ground nutmeg
  • Berries of your choice (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries)

Supplies:

  • Small mixing bowl
  • Small whisk or fork
  • Spoon
  • Air fryer

If you do not already have an air fryer, I can vouch for the Cosori 5.8QT air fryer! I use it all the time and absolutely love it.

Make This Even More Decadent

If you aren’t a huge fan of baked fruit, you can always leave the fruit off and use toppings even sweeter! I have seen it made with shredded chocolate flakes or a dusting of cinnamon and sugar.

You can even leave the toast plain and enjoy the custard toast with just the perfectly toasted bread and custard mixture.

Do I Need to Cook the Fruit Too?

The way the recipe is written, yes you will be cooking the fruit in the air fryer right along with the custard. But, if you would prefer to leave the fruit fresh and just top the custard toast with the fresh berries that will work too!

Preheating the Air Fryer – Why it’s Important

While you do not need to preheat the air fryer for every recipe, it is important to do it for this recipe. It is how you can get that nice crisp on the bottom of the toast without having to overbake the custard inside the bread.

How to Make Air Fryer Custard Toast:

Step 1: Make Up the Custard Mixture

In a small mixing bowl, combine the egg, greek yogurt, honey, nutmeg, and any salt to taste until you get a nice thin consistency without clumps.

Step 2: Prepare the Custard Toast

Start by plugging the air fryer in and turn it on to 360F or 182C for 2-3 minutes to preheat the air fryer.

Then take the bread and either use your fingers or the back of a spoon to push down into the bread to create a large indent inside the bread.

After the basket is preheated, remove it from the air fryer and place the prepared bread into the bottom of the air fryer basket.

Now, carefully spoon the custard mixture evenly into the indent of the bread slices, but leave a little room on the edge so the custard doesn’t spill out of the bread.

Next choose your toppings for the custard toast whether it is either sliced strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or blackberries.

Step 3: Cook in the Air Fryer

Once the toast is all set and in the air fryer basket with all the toppings you’d like, place the air fryer back into the air fryer.

Set the air fryer for 8 minutes at 360F or 182C and let the toast cook until the custard is cooked through and the bread is toasted to your preference.

Step 4: Serve and Enjoy!

When the toast is done cooking in the air fryer, carefully remove the toast from the air fryer basket and serve it hot! Feel free to add some drizzled honey or sprinkle it with some delicious powdered sugar for an added touch.

Sides

You can just enjoy this delicious custard toast as is, or you can add even more flavors with a few other side dishes to serve with it to make it into a rounded breakfast meal.

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the yogurt, egg, honey, nutmeg, and any salt (to taste) until well combined. It should be thinned with no clumps.
  • Using the back of a spoon or your fingertips, press down the middle of the bread to create an indentation that will hold your custard mix. Place the bread in the preheated air fryer basket.
  • Spoon the custard mixture evenly onto each slice of bread, leaving enough space on the edges so that it doesn’t overflow.
  • Top the bread with any berries of your choice.
  • Air fry for 8 minutes at 360 °F, or until custard is cooked and bread is toasted to your liking.
  • Remove from the air fryer basket, enjoy warm, topped with honey or powdered sugar (if desired).

Recipe Notes

Another topping I’ve seen is shredded chocolate.
