Air Fryer Frozen Chicken — Moist and Juicy, Straight from the Freezer to Your Table in 30 Minutes

“How many times have you stood in front of your freezer, staring at that bag of chicken you forgot to thaw? Skip the trip to get yet another pizza, because I can show you how to turn that bag of frozen chicken into a FAST DINNER, from FROZEN, in your AIR FRYER!!”

— Cathy Yoder, The REAL Air Fryer Queen at Empowered Cooks

If you’ve been hanging around Fabulessly Frugal for a while, you already know I am obsessed with my air fryer. But did you know you can cook frozen chicken in the air fryer — no thawing, no waiting, no planning ahead? It may take a little longer than thawed chicken, but the results are just as amazing. Juicy inside, golden outside, and on the table in under 30 minutes.

Can You Cook Frozen Chicken in the Air Fryer?

Yes — and it works better than you’d think. The air fryer circulates hot air around the chicken at high speed, cooking it evenly from frozen without the rubbery texture you’d get from microwaving or the long wait time of the oven. No thawing, no defrosting step, no mess. Just season and go.

What You Need

ingredients for air fryer frozen chicken including frozen chicken tenders, avocado oil, and seasonings

Ingredients

  • Frozen chicken — tenders, breasts, thighs, or wings (see cook times for each cut below)
  • Avocado oil spray or olive oil
  • Seasoning of your choice (see ideas below, including a homemade BBQ blend)

Equipment

1. An Air Fryer

I use and love my Cosori 5.8 qt air fryer and base all my times and temperatures on that model. Because every air fryer brand and model runs a little differently, your cook times may vary slightly. Use your thermometer (below!) to confirm doneness every time — not just the clock.

2. An Instant Read Thermometer

This is non-negotiable. You cannot cook chicken safely without an instant read thermometer. According to the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, poultry must reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) to be safe. Temp the thickest part every single time. Want a handy reference? Grab our FREE Air Fryer Temp & Times download — print it and stick it on the fridge!

How to Cook Frozen Chicken Tenders in the Air Fryer

Chicken tenders are my absolute favorite cut for this method — they cook faster than breasts and come out perfectly juicy every single time. This is what I make on repeat in my kitchen when dinner needs to happen fast.

Step 1: Prep the Chicken

seasoning frozen chicken tenders with avocado oil spray before air frying

Rinse any ice crystals off the frozen tenders under cold water and pat dry. Lightly spray with avocado oil, then season generously to your taste. That’s it — no thawing, no marinating, no waiting.

Step 2: Air Fry the Chicken

Place the tenders in the air fryer basket in a single layer with space between each piece — no overlapping. I can fit 5–8 tenders at a time in my Cosori 5.8 qt. Cook at 360°F for 15 minutes — no preheating needed. Flip the chicken, then cook for an additional 8 minutes or until the internal temperature reads 160–165°F at the thickest part. Tent loosely with foil and rest for 5–10 minutes. The chicken is safe to eat when it reaches 165°F.

How to Cook Frozen Chicken Breasts in the Air Fryer

Frozen chicken breasts take longer than tenders because of their thickness — but they absolutely work in the air fryer. The key is using a thermometer rather than relying on a fixed cook time, since breast size varies significantly. Check the internal temperature rather than the clock.

Temperature: 360°F  |  Flip: Halfway through  |  Done when: 165°F internal at thickest part

Breast Size Weight Cook Time Flip At
Small 4–5 oz 18–20 minutes 10 minutes
Medium 6–8 oz 22–25 minutes 12 minutes
Large 10–12 oz 28–32 minutes 15 minutes

Important: Always temp the thickest part of the breast. If cooking two breasts of different sizes, pull each one as it hits 165°F rather than waiting for the largest — the smaller breast will overcook while you wait. Tent and rest 5 minutes before slicing.

Frozen Chicken Thighs and Wings

The same from-frozen method works for other cuts — just adjust the cook time:

  • Frozen chicken thighs: Cook at 380°F for 25–28 minutes, flipping halfway. Thighs are more forgiving than breasts because of their higher fat content — still temp to 165°F but they’re harder to overcook.
  • Frozen chicken wings: We have a full dedicated post for this one! See our Crispy Air Fryer Frozen Chicken Wings recipe for exact times, temps, and sauce options.

Seasoning Ideas for Frozen Air Fryer Chicken

Season after rinsing and oiling — before the first round of cooking. The seasonings stick beautifully and develop great flavor as the chicken cooks. Here are my favorites:

  • BBQ seasoning (see homemade recipe below!)
  • Lemon pepper
  • Cajun seasoning
  • Italian seasoning
  • Simple blend: onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper

Homemade BBQ Chicken Seasoning

This is the blend I keep in my pantry all year. I make a big batch at once and reach for it constantly — not just for this recipe but for everything from honey garlic chicken to pork chops. Mix together and store in an airtight container. Apply liberally before air frying.

  • ¼ cup chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon thyme
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar

Tips for the Best Frozen Chicken in the Air Fryer

  • Always use a thermometer. Cook time is a guide, not a guarantee. Chicken thickness, air fryer model, and basket fullness all affect timing. The thermometer is the only reliable way to know.
  • Don’t skip the oil. A light spray of avocado oil helps seasoning stick and gives you a golden exterior instead of a pale, steamed-looking result.
  • Single layer only. Overlapping pieces won’t cook evenly. Cook in batches if needed.
  • Separate stuck-together pieces first. Run under cold water for 30 seconds if pieces are frozen together — trying to pry apart frozen chicken tears the meat.
  • Tent after cooking. That 5–10 minute rest lets juices redistribute and finishes bringing the temperature up safely. Don’t skip it.
  • Adjust for your air fryer. Older models or smaller basket air fryers may run hot or unevenly — check a minute or two early on your first batch until you know how yours runs.

Storage and Reheating

Leftover cooked chicken keeps in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3–4 days. For the freezer, cool completely first and freeze for up to 3 months.

To reheat in the air fryer: Place cooked chicken in the basket at 350°F for 3–5 minutes until heated through. This is far better than the microwave — it brings back some of the exterior crispiness that microwaving destroys.

To shred for meal prep: Once cooked and slightly cooled, use your stand mixer with the flat beater attachment for perfectly shredded chicken in under a minute. See our full guide: How to Shred Chicken the Fast Way.

Frequently Asked Questions About Frozen Chicken in the Air Fryer

Can you put frozen chicken in the air fryer?

Yes! The air fryer is one of the best ways to cook frozen chicken — it circulates hot air evenly around the meat, cooking it all the way through without the rubbery texture you’d get from microwaving. No thawing needed.

How long does frozen chicken take in the air fryer?

It depends on the cut. Chicken tenders take about 23 minutes total at 360°F. Chicken breasts take 18–32 minutes depending on size (see the time chart above). Thighs take about 25–28 minutes at 380°F. Always confirm with a thermometer — chicken is safe at 165°F internal temperature.

Do I need to thaw chicken before air frying?

No — that’s the whole point! The air fryer handles frozen chicken beautifully. Just rinse off any ice crystals, spray with oil, season, and cook. The only adjustment from thawed chicken is a longer cook time.

What temperature do you cook frozen chicken in the air fryer?

360°F works well for both tenders and breasts from frozen — hot enough to cook through evenly without burning the outside before the inside is done. Thighs do well at 380°F. Always verify with a thermometer regardless of temperature used.

Do you need to preheat the air fryer for frozen chicken?

No — for frozen chicken specifically, starting in a cold air fryer actually helps the inside come up to temperature gradually before the outside gets too dark. Skip the preheat for this one.

What internal temperature should frozen air fryer chicken reach?

165°F (74°C) at the thickest part — the USDA-recommended safe temperature for all poultry. Temp the thickest part of the meat, not the thin end or a spot near the surface.

Can you cook frozen chicken breast and tenders together?

You can, but they’ll finish at different times — tenders cook much faster than breasts. It’s better to cook them in separate batches so you can pull each one when it hits 165°F without overcooking the tenders while waiting for the breast.

What’s the best brand of frozen chicken tenders for this recipe?

Use your favorite brand! Cathy typically grabs hers from Costco for the best value on raw frozen tenders — just make sure you’re buying raw, unbreaded tenders, not the pre-cooked breaded variety, which uses different cook times.

The next time you’re standing at your freezer at 5pm wondering what’s for dinner — this is your answer. Frozen chicken in the air fryer is genuinely one of the best weeknight tricks I know, and once you have the cook times down you’ll never stress about forgetting to thaw again.
