Home Improvement Hacks: How to decorate small spaces

On today’s installment of home improvement ideas at Fabulessly Frugal, we will be sharing with you some tips and tricks, ideas and inspirations for how to decorate small spaces on a budget. This will help you feel empowered to finally decorate your home!

Important note, I am no interior designer. So today’s tips are inspired by a post from Moving.com called 14 Tips for Decorating a Small Space. (You can check out this post for more details) and a video titled, Four Tips for Maximizing Your Space with Toledo Geller. I am, however, frugal and like to live within a budget. As such, the products I share with you today will be low cost and highly rated!

Three basic decorating tips

1. Use what you already have

You will save so much more money if you avoid purchases and use leftovers from previous projects. Be sure to also take a look in garage for any old things that you can use as well.

2. Take a trip to the thrift store

The thrift store may have some great finds that you can easily refurbish with some spray paint or wood stain. Or, if you are going for a more old timey look, you can use it as is.

3. Be Creative

Instead of purchasing everything brand new and name brand, see if you can find similar items or shapes at the dollar store or other inexpensive stores. It may require some disassembling and reassembling, but you can DIY the same accessories.

Here are 5 of the best and most frugal tips I found for decorating small spaces!

1. Add Light

Light will help define the space you are working with. Natural light works wonders in small spaces. However, if that isn’t a available for you, you can use fairy lights or string lights around the room to give it soft glow. This is an awesome hack especially if you don’t have space for floor or table lamps.

2. Choose multi-functional furniture

Because space is limited, you will want furniture that can be used in different scenarios and settings. For example, use ottomans or cushions that can be easily stored beneath tables that could be used for extra seating and/or decoration. Or, you can use a side table that can also be a desk.

3. Optimize your storage space

Optimize and get creative with your storage space. Use this space as not only storage but also decoration. Make your storage look fab by using greenery, bowl, vases, or family photos. Pair these decoration with what you are actually storing in that spot to create an adorable storage space.

4. Don’t forget about your walls

To further optimize your space, use the space on your walls for further storage with things like these open shelving or wall ladders. Be mindful of where you place items on your wall because you want it to create an extension of the space and not make it feel more crowded. A note from Moving. com says to install the rod (for hanging drapes) about 2 inches below the ceiling or crown molding, which adds an illusion of extra height.

5. Get rid of clutter

Like any space you are decorating, especially small spaces, LESS IS MORE. Don’t overcrowd the space with an array of decorations. Choose the ones you love best. Get rid of unnecessary clutter.

Redecorating your house is refreshing. But, don’t feel like you need to tackle decorating your house all at once. Start small and make improvements as you see them and as your budget is available.
