7 Tips For Healthy Snacking
At the beginning of 2021, Fab Frugal Anna decided it was time to create a healthier lifestyle for herself and her family. She changed to start a lower fat and lower sugar diet and it worked! She lost 60 pounds and got herself out of the prediabetic range. Although she did exercise some, she attributes most of her success to eating healthier. She says that often the hardest part about eating healthy can be knowing what to snack on. Healthy snacks are key to keeping your energy up and if you don’t have some on hand, you’re more likely to grab that cookie to stave off your hunger in the middle of the day. Here are some of her favorite snack ideas.
Cut Vegetables
Try to have some cut vegetables on hand that are easy to grab when you get hungry. Check out our list of the Best Fruit and Vegetable Cutters that will make it easy to prepare your veggies.
Hummus
If you don’t like to eat your veggies plain, try dipping them in a hummus for added flavor. Hummus is a great source of protein and can help to keep you feeling full longer. Make sure to try several types of hummus, because the flavors can vary quite a bit. A favorite in our house is Sabra Red Pepper Hummus.
Yogurt and Granola
Low fat yogurt along with a good granola can be a yummy and filling snack. Make sure to check labels on your granola. You want one that is lower in sugar, like Bear Naked Triple Berry Granola.
Fresh and Dried Fruit
Adding fresh fruit to your diet is a good way to curb that sweet tooth. Refer to our Best Fruit and Vegetable Cutters post if you don’t already have a favorite way to prepare yours. Because it can be hard to find fresh fruit at an affordable price in the winter, think about grabbing some dried fruit. Just make sure to read labels. Some dried fruits can have tons of added sugar. We like Bare Baked Crunchy Apples and Bare Baked Crunchy Banana Chips.
Protein Shakes
Needing a quick snack or meal on the go can sometimes send us to fast food chains. I find that keeping low sugar protein shakes on hand helps tremendously. They are easy to grab and can also help with your sweet tooth. Remember that not all brands are created equal, so do your research. I like Premier Protein Shakes. If you have a little extra time, try pouring the vanilla flavor over fruit. It makes a yummy breakfast or snack.
Nuts
Nuts can be another great source of protein that is easy to grab on the go. However they can have a lot of added salt, so make sure to check the label. Kirkland Signature Extra Fancy Unsalted Mixed Nuts are a favorite.
Alternatives to high calorie desserts
Sugar cravings can easily derail your healthy food train. Try to keep some healthier alternatives on hand. These snacks may not be at the top of the healthy snack list, but can be a good way to treat yourself so you don’t feel like you are deprived. Try things like Fiber One Cookies, Nature’s Bakery Fig Bars, and sugar free Jello with fat free whipped cream. Remember to eat these in moderation.
Remember that small changes can make a big difference, and don’t beat yourself up if you make a mistake. Healthy eating is lifestyle change. It takes work, but the benefits are definitely worth it!
