Make Your Own Garlic Spread Seasoning
I love garlic bread. My whole family loves bread, garlic bread is one of my favorites though. When my husband and I were dating, he came over to my parent’s house for dinner one Sunday night. My mom was baking rolls and he asked how many she had prepared. He thought she said 15 and he was amazed that she made that many for 8 people. But really, she said 50! Ha. I love that story.
Anyway, I think garlic bread or bread sticks go well with nearly any dinner. If you’re in a pinch, you can just toast and butter some bread, then lightly sprinkle garlic salt on top. But this is an even better garlic seasoning that you can make in advance and store for up to 3 months. Plus, it is cheaper to make yourself than to buy a good pre-made garlic seasoning from the store, like the popular Johnny’s Garlic Spread & Seasoning.
The only ingredient I didn’t have was the marjoram. To start out, I just bought a little .15 oz bottle of it at my local grocery store for under $2. It will be enough for a few batches and if you love the garlic seasoning, like I do, then you can look for a better deal later on a bulk amount.
Here’s my favorite bread stick recipe.
And here’s a recipe for homemade French bread, if you really want to go all out.
Make Your Own Garlic Spread Seasoning
Ingredients
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1-2 teaspoons Kosher salt
- 2 tablespoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 2 teaspoons dried basil
- 2 teaspoons dried marjoram
- 2 teaspoons dried parsley
Instructions
- Shake ingredients together in an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator or freezer for up to 3 months.
Serving Suggestions:
- Sprinkle on top of bread sticks, rolls, vegetables, baked potatoes, fish, or chicken.
- Combine 1 1/2 tablespoons seasoning with 1/2 cup of softened real butter and spread on a loaf of French bread. Wrap in foil and bake at 375 until butter is melted or broil until toasted.
Can’t wait to try this…I’m pretty sure I have everything on hand. I’m guessing if I omit the cheese until I’m ready to use the mix that I can keep the mix in my spice rack and for a longer amount of time?
I would guess that same thing. Great idea!
I LOVE the story about your mom!
It is a classic story that he likes to tell at every family gathering. 😉
This looks awesome!
It is nice to have on hand!
A sweet friend brought this over for dinner the other night, and my husband was Immediately: WE MUST GET THAT RECIPE!! It’s amazing!
He’s more the type that generally doesn’t comment, so if he does, you know it must be amazing! And of course, it is!! Going to make up a big batch of this! What an easy way to turn everyday into extraordinary!
Thanks for sharing Melanie (and Monica!!)
So glad you like it! You must have some awesome friends. 😉
I used 2 Tbs. Italian seasoning in place of the oregano, basil, and marjoram. Otherwise, everything else was the same. Amazing flavor!
Great! That sounds like a good substitution.
I love my Italian seasoning but didn’t use it for a recipe similar to this because the marjoram is crucial.
Do I need to keep this in the refrigerator since it has grated parmesan in it?
Yep! Store it in the refrigerator or the freezer.
Hi. I am not a cheese person. Can I omit the parmesan cheese?
Sure! It will obviously be quite a bit different because the Parmesan is the bulk of the recipe, but the seasonings will still add some flavor.
Thank you for this recipe! I’ve been looking for an equivalent to Johnny’s Garlic Spread. I live in the Netherlands and we don’t have any Johnny’s Finefoods products or anything else that comes near to a garlic spread. Shipping a jar of Johnny’s costst 55 dollars…which is a ridiculous amount to ask for just for shipping it.
So I am very happy that I finally found the next best thing!
Yay! I’m so glad you found this copycat recipe! Thanks for taking the time to share and let us know that we helped you out! 🙂
I made a batch of this without the Parmesan, so that it can store on the shelf in a shaker. When I want garlic bread, I butter some bread, sprinkle the seasoning on it, then sprinkle on some Parmesan. Then I toast it in the toaster oven. Very easy and convenient – restaurant-quality garlic bread any time I want it, without spending a lot of money.
Great hack!! Thanks for sharing, Sandy!
Does this really taste like Johnnys? I used to buy it in Costco Canada but have since moved to the UK and can’t get it here
