Sensational Hot Fudge Pudding Cake Recipe

This is a surprisingly easy homemade hot fudge pudding cake recipe – the hot fudge is built right in! I love that this cake is from scratch, but made with simple ingredients that I already have in my pantry. Plus, it really doesn’t take long to make!

Also, I’ll let you in on a little secret right now: this cake is perfect to serve with ice cream. Feel free to buy some from your local grocery store, as it’s the most convenient, but I really recommend that you try this homemade vanilla ice cream recipe. It’s so good you’ll want to invite some friends over to try it too! (Or maybe you’ll want to keep it all to yourself…)

Hot Fudge Pudding Cake Ingredients

Take a look at the ingredients list (found below) for this recipe and you’ll see how simple it really is. I luckily already had all the ingredients on hand and you might too!

Recommended Kitchen Supplies

I cook quite a lot and I absolutely LOVE my OXO Good Grips Balloon Whisk. This thing has been with me since the beginning and it’s still in great shape. I also used my OXO silicone spatula, and my OXO Ice Cream Scoop for this recipe. Can you tell that I really like OXO?

One other thing you will need to make the perfect hot fudge pudding cake is an 8-inch square baking pan. You probably already have one but if you don’t, you can find a nice one on Amazon for pretty cheap.

  • Preheat oven to 350°F/175°C. Spray an 8-inch square baking pan with cooking spray. Whisk 1/2 cup sugar with 1/4 cup cocoa powder and set aside.
  • Whisk the flour, remaining 1/2 cup sugar, remaining 1/4 cup cocoa, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Whisk milk, butter, egg yolk, and vanilla in medium bowl until smooth. Stir milk mixture into flour mixture until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips.
  • Using a rubber spatula, scrape batter into prepared pan and spread into corners. Sprinkle reserved cocoa and sugar mixture evenly over the top. Gently pour boiling water over cocoa. Do not stir.
  • Bake until the top of the cake is cracked, sauce is bubbling and a toothpick inserted into cakey area comes out with moist crumbs attached, about 22-24 minutes. Cool on rack for at least 10 minutes. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
