Can I Use Homemade Pie Crust?
If you are up for the task, you are more than welcome to use your own homemade pie crust, or give Live Well Bake Often’s homemade pie crust recipe a try!
You may want to watch the cooking time a bit more though since the dough won’t be cold like the refrigerated dough.
What Other Fillings to Use
Cherry filling is what we use in this hand pie recipe, especially with Valentine’s Day coming up, but you can use other fillings too!
- Blueberry filling
- Apple filling
- Strawberry filling
- Peach filling
How to Make Cherry Hand Pie Hearts:
Step 1: Cut the Hearts
Carefully unravel both pie crusts onto a flat surface (we lined ours with parchment paper), and cut out about 16 hearts.
Gather and reroll scraps as needed in order to cut out more hearts (you’ll need to have an even number of hearts).
Step 2: Fill the Hand Pies
Next, use the egg wash to wet the edges of the hearts on the pan.
Carefully place 5-6 cherries in the center of each heart in a V formation using a fork. Try and avoid putting too much of the gel from the filling otherwise, the hearts will overflow.
Step 3: Assembling the Pies
Cut a small “X” in the center of the remaining half of the hearts that are not on the pan.
Carefully place the “X” heart crusts on top of each of the filled hearts. Line up the pointed tips before pressing the crusts together for the prettiest presentation.
Step 4: Finishing Touches
Press and crimp the edges of the layered pie crusts with a fork (about 1/2-inch) to secure them closed. If any pie filling pops out, use a slightly damp paper towel to clean it up.
Brush the sealed pies with egg wash to help keep the pies sealed.
Step 5: Bake the Cherry Hand Pies
When you are finished prepping all of the hand pies, place them in the air fryer basket and air fry at 350 degrees F or 176 degrees C for 6-8 minutes, or until golden and perfect.
