Supplies You Need When Getting A New Dog

Are you thinking about bringing a new dog or puppy into your home? First, congratulations! Our family recently got a dog after years of my kids asking, and our lives have never been the same since! Here’s a picture of us with our sweet Molly.

There are some crucial things you will want to make sure you do and have in order to safety welcome your new best friend into your home! Do you have everything on this list?

Before you bring a new dog home, make sure you have:

1. Food

The type of food you get will depends on the age and breed of your dog. Do some research about the breed you are getting before you bring your new family member home.

2. Food and Water Bowls

Dogs can be hard on their bowls. Make sure you get quality food and water bowls that will last for a long time. We like these stainless steel bowls. 

3. Collar and ID Tag

This is a must-have for your puppy or dog in case he or she ever gets lost. Make sure the tag includes:

• your address
• the best phone number to reach you at

4. Bed

Choose a bed that is comfortable, washable, and spacious enough for your dog to enjoy.

5. Toys

6. Crate and Dog Gates

You will want to create a temporary, gated off living space for your dog. This will ensure that they don’t eat anything that they shouldn’t in your home. Additionally, this will help them potty train if you are getting a puppy.

7. Stain and Odor Removing Cleaners

Accidents happen, so be prepared with some stain and odor removing cleaners to keep your floors clean.

8. A Vet Appointment

This is a crucial part to bringing a new puppy or dog to your home. If the dog you’ve adopted hasn’t already been to a vet, this needs to be your first stop for your new friend. You will want to make sure your dog has received their vaccinations and negative test results for various diseases and medical conditions.

Once you bring your puppy home, here’s how you can introduce them to your home and family.

1. Keep it pleasant, but low-key at first

It is important to keep things calm and happy while you learn your new dogs personality. You don’t want to overwhelm him or her.

2. Introduce your dog to their crate

As mentioned earlier, this is a good way to get them housed trained and potty trained.

3. Start your training

The earlier you start, the better training experience everyone will have. It may be overwhelming at first, but it will be so worth it!

4. Set up a routine

A routine will help with the training process and help your dog or puppy feel comfortable.

5. Get your dog license

This is a legal requirement in many places in the US. However, check with your local officials to see if you need to get a dog license. Even if it isn’t required, it is still an important step. This will allow your dog to get back to you in the case he or she ever gets lost.

6. Find a good vet

I good vet is super important. You will want to find one that makes you and your pet feel comfortable.
