The ingredients you need for a homemade glaze are:

  • Powdered sugar
  • Heavy cream, plus more until glaze is to your consistency and liking
  • Melted butter
  • Vanilla extract

Topping Ingredients

What’s a pop tart without some sprinkles? While you don’t have to enjoy these pop tarts with sprinkles, it sure makes them look better!

I haven’t tried this, but I think mini chocolate chips would also be a wonderful topping!

Supplies:

  • An air fryer – I used my Cosori 5.8 quart air fryer to make this recipe. Any air fryer will work, you may need to adapt the cooking time because all air fryer makes and models aren’t the same.
  • Rectangular shape cookie cutter or a container or a lid – you need this to cut out equal sized dough sheets. I found a plastic container that was roughly 2.5-3 inches by 4.5 inches. You can use any size you want, it just depends on how big you like your pastries.
  • Pizza cutter or knife – if not using a cookie cutter to cut the pie crust into pastry squares.
  • A rolling pin – to reconstruct the pie crusts dough to cut out more squares.

How to Make Homemade Pop Tarts in the Air Fryer:

Homemade pop tarts are a fun and delicious recipe that is so easy to make in the air fryer! Be sure to follow these instructions when you are preparing and baking pop tarts in the air fryer.

Step 1: Make sure the pie crusts are at room temperature.

Make sure the pie crust is at room temperature before you begin. You can place the dough in the microwave and warm it up for 10-15 seconds on the defrost mode (30% power).

If the pie crusts are not at room temperature, they will be difficult to unroll and may crack and break. If this happens, you can reform the pie crust. Simply get your finger slightly wet with water and lightly pinch the cracks back together.

Step 2: Use a lightly greased surface

Take the pie crust dough and unroll it onto a lightly greased surface. I used a cookie sheet.

Step 3: Cut out the pastries

use a rectangular cut out to make pop tarts

Lightly press the rectangular container you are using onto the dough. I was able to get 5 squares on one pie crust. Take the pizza cutter and cut out the dough rectangles. Then, reform the dough to get the 6th pastry square. I had to lightly wet the edges of the dough to get them to stick together before rolling out a new sheet.

Step 4: Preheat the air fryer

Preheat the air fryer for 5 minutes at 400 degrees F or 200 degrees C.

Step 5: Make the pastries

use your favorite filling for the pop tarts

Take three of the pastry squares and lightly wet the perimeter of each.

In the middle of the three sheets place anywhere from 1/2 tbsp to 1 tbsp of jam/preserves (this depends on the size of your sheets). Spread out the jam to cover the middle portion of each of the sheets.

Take the other three sheets and place it on top of the sheets with jam. Pinch together the seams, adding any additional water to help it close. Seal it by pressing the sides together with a fork.

Cut a couple of slits into the top of the dough so it can breathe while cooking.

Step 6: Air fry

Place the pastries in a lightly sprayed and preheated air fryer basket. Lightly spray the tops with cooking spray oil – such as avocado oil or olive oil.

Air fry in the air fryer for 10 minutes at 350F/175C, or until the pastry is golden brown to your liking. While this cooks, repeat for the other sheet of pie crust, if desired, or save the other pie crust for another time.

Step 7: Let cool

Remove from the air fryer and let it cool completely on a cooling rack. If you are in a pinch for time, I placed my pop tarts in the freezer for a couple of minutes to help.

Step 8: Add the toppings

I also had leftover peach slices from a cobbler recipe I was making and placed the small peach slices with the peach preserves. This added a tasty and fresh flavor!

  • Lemon
  • Cherry

  • Apricot
  • Chocolate or Nutella
  • Brown sugar cinnamon (not pie filling, but still delicious)
