Cake Mix Banana Bread (Easy 3-Ingredient Recipe)
This Cake Mix Banana Bread Recipe Is Moist & Easy
Cake Mix Banana Bread That Takes Just Minutes to Prep
Cake mix banana bread is the shortcut recipe you’ll make on repeat when you want a warm, cozy loaf without pulling out a bunch of measuring cups. This version uses a box of yellow (or vanilla) cake mix plus 3 simple main ingredients to create a soft, moist banana bread with that classic homemade taste.
And the best part? Readers have been customizing this banana bread with cake mix for years with fun swaps like spice cake mix, carrot cake mix, chocolate cake mix, and even cinnamon bun cake mix. We’ll walk you through the basics and the best variations—plus fixes if your loaf takes longer to bake or doesn’t match the photos perfectly (it happens!).
Why Cake Mix Works for Banana Bread
A boxed cake mix is basically a baking shortcut with the dry ingredients already balanced—flour, sugar, leavening, and flavoring. When you combine it with ripe bananas and eggs, you get a tender crumb and reliable rise without the usual measuring. It’s a great option for beginner bakers and busy families.
If you want a deeper dive into banana ripeness and how it impacts baking, King Arthur Baking has a helpful guide on bananas and banana bread basics (great for troubleshooting and learning why some loaves bake differently): Ultimate Guide to Banana Bread (King Arthur Baking).
Cake Mix Banana Bread Ingredients
You only need 3 main ingredients for this easy banana bread with cake mix:
- 3 to 4 overripe bananas (about 1 1/2 cups mashed)
- 1 box yellow or vanilla cake mix
- 2 large eggs
Optional add-ins: chocolate chips, chopped nuts, raisins, dried cranberries, or a swirl of Nutella/peanut butter.
How to Make Cake Mix Banana Bread
- Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- Mash the bananas until mostly smooth (a few small lumps are fine).
- Mix mashed bananas, cake mix, and eggs until just combined. Don’t overmix.
- Fold in any add-ins (chips, nuts, etc.).
- Grease your pan well (spray, butter, or spray + flour). Pour batter in.
- Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean (see bake-time guide below).
- Cool 10–15 minutes in the pan, then remove to a rack to cool completely before slicing.
Best Cake Mix Flavors (Reader Favorites)
One reason this recipe stays popular is how easy it is to customize. Here are flavors readers have loved:
- Yellow cake mix: classic, balanced sweetness, best “traditional” result
- Spice cake mix: a standout favorite (especially with extra cinnamon and cloves)
- Carrot cake mix: cozy, warmly spiced, delicious twist
- Chocolate cake mix: rich and decadent (great with chocolate chips)
- Cinnamon bun cake mix: fun experiment that many readers enjoy
Reader note we loved: One reader shared they make it with spice or carrot cake mix, and another added extra cinnamon + cloves for a “beyond wonderful” loaf. That kind of real-life testing is exactly why this recipe works for so many families.
Pan Sizes & Baking Times
Large loaf pan size: A standard large loaf pan is generally 9″ x 5″.
- 9×5 loaf pan: 45–55 minutes
- Mini loaf pans: 25–35 minutes (varies by pan size)
- Bundt pan: about 45 minutes (grease very well)
Bundt pan tip: Readers have successfully baked this in a bundt pan—expect a slightly longer bake time depending on the pan and cake mix type. Start checking around 40 minutes and continue as needed.
Tips for Moist Banana Bread + Troubleshooting
- Use very ripe bananas: The browner, the better for sweetness and moisture.
- Don’t overmix: Mix until just combined to avoid a dense loaf.
- Bake time can vary: Different cake mixes, banana moisture, and pan materials can change bake time a lot.
- If it’s taking longer than expected: Cover loosely with foil after the top is golden and keep baking until a toothpick comes out clean.
- If your loaf doesn’t look like the photo: Totally normal. Cake mix brands and pan shapes impact color and rise. Go by doneness, not appearance.
- Want a pretty finish? One reader shared a great idea: dust the top with powdered sugar after baking for an easy bakery-style look.
Only have 2 bananas? You can make it, but you’ll have less banana flavor and potentially a drier loaf. For best texture, freeze your bananas until you have enough (or wait until you’ve got at least 3).
How to Store & Freeze
- Room temp: Store tightly wrapped for 2–3 days.
- Fridge: Wrap and refrigerate up to 1 week (warm slices to soften).
- Freeze: Slice and freeze in a single layer, then store in a freezer bag up to 3 months.
Cake Mix Banana Bread FAQs
Can I make banana bread with cake mix?
Yes! Cake mix provides the dry structure, and the bananas add moisture and flavor—making it an easy, reliable shortcut.
Do I need to add oil or milk?
Not for this version. The bananas provide plenty of moisture. If you swap cake mix flavors or add lots of mix-ins, you may need a few extra minutes of baking time.
What cake mix is best for banana bread?
Yellow or vanilla cake mix is the classic choice, but spice and carrot cake mixes are reader favorites for a warm, cozy twist.
Can I bake this in mini loaf pans?
Yes. Mini loaves bake faster, so start checking around 25 minutes and continue until a toothpick comes out clean.
Can I make this in a bundt pan?
Yes—grease it very well and plan for about 45 minutes, checking for doneness as needed.

Trying this now. It smells great! Thanks for the recipe!
This is an awesome recipe!! SO yummo and SO easy!! TY!!! Making some more for church in a.m.!!! God Bless!! 🙂
The picture of the ingredients shows a French Vanilla cake mix, but the recipe states “Yellow Cake Mix”. Which flavor is correct, or can either one be used?
I’ve used both with the same result.
Any cake mix can be used, I used yellow first time. Tried confette but thought that was too sweet. Tried chocolate & that wasOK. Want to try spice next time. Add anything you like, chips, raisins, cranbeeries or nuts Really good
Great tips, thanks Bette!
Question: the picture shows 3 eggs, but the recipe says 2.. which is it? Thanks!
I would go with the 2 in the recipe. I was probably thinking I was making a cake. Sorry.
have you ever tried making this with chocolate cake mix? How did it turn out?
I’m new at this, but I wanted to know what is considered a large loaf pan?
It’s generally 9″ x 5″
FYI-The mini loaf pans you have listed, are no longer $9.91.They’re now $17 and some change.
I use the disposable mini pans $1.00 for 4 a the dollar store and I use the pans more than one time.
Is it possible to make this in a traditional bundt pan.
I have never tried that but I am sure it would work. Try it out and let us know 🙂
I do!!!
I use one and just grease the sides well and cook for 40-45 minutes!! Dust the top with powdered sugar afterwards and it is gorgeously yummy
Thanks for sharing Amanda!
I have made it in a bundt pan and it works great. Just a little longer cooking time 45 min.
Oh great tip, thanks Dorothy!
Trying it now but using cinnamon bun cake mix.. I’ll let you know how it turns out.. 😀
Oh that’s a fun idea!!
I only have 2 bananas right now, will that be ok, should I add something else to make yo the difference? I guess I’m concerned about the consistency of it. I realize it would be less banana flavor. Just want to use these two up. Any help will be appreciate. I may just need to freeze these and wait till I get more bananas.
Thank you
Mine definitely doesn’t look like the picture and took way longer to bake. Not something I will be making again.
Made this with a spice cake mix with extra cinnamon and cloves. Beyond wonderful!
Yum! That sounds like a great adaptation and different flavor of cake mix banana bread. Thank for sharing, Bettina!
My husband and I adore this recipe. I make it wit Spice or Carrot cake mix and it is delicious!
Those options both sound like a delicious spin on cake mix banana bread! Love it! Thank you for your comment and review, Vicki.
