Easy Crispy Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Sandwiches!
How to make grilled cheese sandwiches in the air fryer!
Grilled cheese sandwiches are already pretty simple and easy, right? Well, they just got easier and better. Grilled cheese in the air fryer is quick, hands-off, and oh so crispy. It’s pretty much set it and forget it (for a few minutes) for perfect results.
All of my kids eat these air fryer grilled cheese sandwiches right up and ask for more. Crispy, toasted bread on the outside with gooey, melted cheese on the inside. Best grilled cheese sandwiches ever!
Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Sandwich Tips
I recommend using a sandwich bread that is on the thick side. And you want it to be a soft, moist bread too. If the bread is too thin or already dry, it will become even more dry after cooking in the air fryer. Grandma Sycamore’s bread is a great option.
Once you’ve buttered the outside sides of each piece of bread, place two slices of bread in the air fryer, buttered side down.
Then get the cheese on there! I am a full coverage type of gal, so I filled in blank spaces with more cheese. I usually have colby jack on hand, so that’s what I use, but any of your favorite grilled cheese selections will work!
Once adequate cheese is in place, it’s time to top things off with those last two slices of bread, buttered side up. No need to spray the air fryer basket because the bread is buttered.
The size of your air fryer will determine if you can fit one or two sandwiches at a time. I have a Philips XXL air fryer. Love it!
Look at these nice and toasty grilled cheese sandwiches! Just 6-8 minutes in the air fryer at 350°F/175°C. Stick ’em in there, set a timer, and come back when the timer goes off. Take a peek to make sure the cheese is melted and the bread is crispy. Feel free to flip at the halfway point!
For toasty, crispy air fryer grilled cheese sandwiches…
If you want a little more toasting, set the air fryer to 400°F/200°C for an additional 1-2 minutes. You may want to flip the sandwiches as this point as well to promote even browning. The evenness of the cooking will depend on your air fryer, but something to consider and check on.
Take your grilled cheese up a notch…
Because air fryer grilled cheese sandwiches are so crispy on the outside, they are absolutely perfect for dipping in soup or whatever you desire! Check out our favorite soup recipes.
- Try a combo of your favorite cheeses to really take it up a notch – sharp cheddar, provolone, American cheese, Monterey jack, gruyere, brie, white cheddar, mozzarella, parmesan, etc.
- Add a thin layer of Dijon mustard on one piece of the sandwich bread before adding the cheese and cooking.
- Make a garlic butter spread for the bread. Yum!
- Add a slice of ham or cooked bacon.
Do you have a favorite way to add even more flavor to your grilled cheese sandwich?

Hi,
Can you make it with Whole wheat bread? We don’t eat white bread.
Hi Sheri! Most breads work with this recipe, but moist dense breads do better… so just be aware of that as you choose your wheat bread. 🙂
