Do Essential Oils Really Save You Money?

Essential oils are becoming more and more popular lately. Why? doTERRA has made Essential Oils so popular over the last 10 years because of the results people experience when they use them. They are incredibly effective and useful for physical and mental health, cleanliness, beauty, hair care and more. They can help improve nearly any aspect of your life as long as you are using Certified Therapeutic Grade essential oils. But, I’ve heard this question over and over… “Are essential oils worth the money?”

Do essential oils really save you money?

Yes… as long as you use high quality essential oils.

Yes, high quality oils are a bit of an investment. You’ve heard that saying, “you get what you pay for.” Right? Well, the better quality, the more SAFE and effective your essential oils. If your purpose in using essential oils is to reap the the amazing health and emotional benefits, you want them to be pure and safe for everyone in the family.

Do your homework on this. I refuse to purchase essential oils from a supermarket, Costco, Amazon, or even a whole foods store. For my body, my family, and our health, I only want to use pure essential oils that are sourced humanely, safely, and are tested for purity. I don’t want to use essential oils laced with filler chemicals and synthetics – that certainly will NOT improve our health, nor help me save money!

1 – Essential Oils Have a Long Shelf Life

Essential oils have a long shelf life! Have you ever gone to grab a bottle of pills only to find that it expired a year ago? Seriously, that has happened to me more than once. I would buy whatever it was, when it was needed, use a little, and by the time I would need to product again, it would be expired! Down the toilet it would go, along with my money as I would run to the store to buy more… I’d repeat that same cycle over and over. With essential oils, you don’t have to worry about the product going bad or expiring.

All essential oils marked for internal use will have an expiration date. However, the nature and structure of essential oils makes them very stable. Shelf life testing has shown that essential oils maintain their potency even after 5–10 years or more.

Of course, the way you store the essential oils will have an effect on how long they last too. Here are some guidelines for ideal essential oil storage:

• Store the essential oil in room-temperature conditions and avoid exposure to extreme temperatures.
• Avoid exposing the oils to direct sunlight or other sources of UV rays.
• Prevent prolonged exposure to oxygen which can cause oxidation of the oil over time.
• Tightly secure the caps after each use to prevent the oil from evaporating and decrease exposure to oxygen.

It is extremely likely that the essential oil is going to last a long, long time for you. In fact, most people find the oil useful enough that they benefit from the whole bottle long before it expires!

2 – Replace Household Products

Did you know you can make effective DIY products with essential oils? You can actually replace stuff you would normally buy with essential oils. It is more of a replacement cost than an additional cost. And guess what? It often costs less to use the essential oil version! Another huge bonus: essential oils are safe and non-toxic for the whole family. Way to go – reduce your toxic load AND save money at the same time!

Cost Comparisons of Store Bought Products vs DIY Products Using doTERRA Essential Oils:

Formula 409 32 oz, $2.88 = $0.09/oz

On Guard Cleaner 24 oz, $1.20 = $0.05/oz

The On Guard cleaner concentrate is $14.50 wholesale, which is about $0.60 per tablespoon. I add 1-2 tablespoons to 24-ounce spray bottle of water, so it comes to about $1.20 per bottle. It is an awesome all-purpose cleaner too! I use it everyday on my kitchen counters and more. Windex 23 oz, $3.77 = $0.16/oz

DIY glass cleaner 16 oz, about $0.60 = $0.04/oz

Add 1 1/2 cups white vinegar, 1/2 distilled water, and 8 drops citrus essential oil (lemon, lime, grapefruit, wild orange, or a combination) to a 16-ounce spray bottle. Shake it up and start cleaning!
Lemon essential oil is $11.00, or $0.04 per drop. One gallon of vinegar is about $3.00, about $0.28 for 1 1/2 cups.

The Conclusion is… Essential Oils DO Save Money on many household products!

Fun, easy examples! Now you see why it makes sense to look at the essential oil purchase as a replacement cost (and a wise one too), rather than an additional cost. Plus, it is all non-toxic and safe for the whole family!

3 – Essential Oils Cost Pennies Per Drop

One bottle of essential oil goes a long way! As you can see from the example above, you only need a few drops per use and each drop costs only pennies. The amount you use will sometimes vary depending on the oil you’re using and the desired result, but here are some general numbers for ya…

Aromatic: I usually use anywhere from 4-7 drops of essential oil in my diffusers per use. How long it lasts while diffusing will depend on the diffuser, but 6 hours is a good general number. Freshens the air and benefits everyone in the room!

Internal: First of all, do not use just any essential oil internally! This method of use is only for essential oils that are marked as safe for internal use and are only the best quality and purity. Adults 1-4 drops, children 1-2 drops per use.

Topical: When applying an oil topically, adults 3-6 drops and children 1-2 drops per use. I almost always dilute my oils with fractionated coconut oil… it helps spread those drops over a larger area,  creates a slower absorption period, and protects sensitive skin (great for kids!).

• Wild Orange: $0.04 per drop
• Peppermint: $0.09 per drop
• OnGuard: $0.13 per drop
• Lemon: $0.04 per drop
• Lavender: $0.08 per drop

• Eucalyptus: $0.06 per drop
• Lime: $0.05 per drop
• Purify: $0.08 per drop

I love using essential oils every day for myself and my family. I know that we are healthier throughout the year!
