Do Essential Oils Really Save You Money?

Essential oils are becoming more and more popular lately. It is because they are so incredibly effective and useful for physical and mental health, cleanliness, beauty, hair care and more. They can help improve nearly any aspect of your life! How about your wallet though?

Do essential oils really save you money?

How can you save money when you are spending it on the essential oils? It’s true. Quality oils are a little bit of an investment. The better quality, the more effective though. Plus, you want them to be pure and safe for everyone in the family, right? Do your homework on this. I no longer purchase essential oils from a supermarket, Amazon, or even a whole foods store. However, there are a few reputable companies that really do a lot of quality testing and put a lot of effort into being able to offer the best oils possible.

I do have a FAVORITE essential oil company. I love and trust the company and the products. Been using them for over 4 years now! I could go on, and in fact I have, in this other blog post. Check it out here or email me at seekingwellness at fabulesslyfrugal dot com.

The best quality oils are totally worth the investment though, not only because they are more effective and safe, but they really do end up saving you money! Let’s talk about how…

  • Long shelf life
  • Replace other products
  • Pennies per drop
  • Health benefits

Shelf Life

Essential oils have a long shelf life! Ever gone to grab a bottle of pills only to find that it expired a year ago? Seriously, that has happened to me more than once. I buy it when I need it, use some, and it expires by the time I look at it again. Then it gets thrown away and I buy more only to repeat the cycle over and over. Did you know most essential oils can remain potent for 10 years!?

All essential oils marked for internal use will have an expiration date. However, the nature and structure of essential oils makes them very stable. Shelf life testing has shown that essential oils maintain their potency even after 5–10 years or more.

Of course, the way you store the essential oils will have an effect on how long they last too. Here are some guidelines for ideal storage:

  • Store the essential oil in room-temperature conditions and avoid exposure to extreme temperatures.
  • Avoid exposing the oils to direct sunlight or other sources of UV rays.
  • Prevent prolonged exposure to oxygen which can cause oxidation of the oil over time.
  • Tightly secure the caps after each use to prevent the oil from evaporating and decrease exposure to oxygen.

It is extremely likely that the essential oil is going to last a long, long time for you. In fact, most people find the oil useful enough that they benefit from the whole bottle long before it expires!

Replace Household Products

Did you know you can make effective DIY products with essential oils? You can actually replace stuff you would normally buy with essential oils. It is more of a replacement cost than an additional cost. And guess what? It often costs less to use the essential oil version! Another huge bonus: essential oils are safe and non-toxic for the whole family. Way to go – reduce your toxic load AND save money at the same time!

You might be surprised to see how many products you can replace around your home with the use of these awesome essential oils. You can replace these and more:

  • All-purpose cleaner
  • Candles
  • Air freshener
  • Wood cleaner
  • Glass cleaner
  • Bug repellent
  • Beauty products
  • and more!

Let’s break down some cost comparisons to give you an idea of what I’m talking about…

Formula 409 32 oz, $2.88 = $0.09/oz
On Guard Cleaner 24 oz, $1.20 = $0.05/oz
The On Guard cleaner concentrate is $14.50 wholesale, which is about $0.60 per tablespoon. I add 1-2 tablespoons to 24-ounce spray bottle of water, so it comes to about $1.20 per bottle. It is an awesome all-purpose cleaner too! I use it everyday on my kitchen counters and more. It is so powerful because it uses the proprietary blend On Guard – made up of wild orange, clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary. Natural and non-toxic! It supports healthy immune function and really cleans up those surfaces.

Febreeze 27 oz, $4.94 = $0.18/oz
Purify Spray 8 oz, $0.70 = $0.09/oz
Purify essential oil blend $18.00, or $0.07 per drop. I add 10 drops of the oil to an 8-ounce spray bottle of water. Purify is an exclusive combination of essential oils that purify and eradicate odors in a natural, safe way. This uplifting blend combines lemon, Siberian fir, citronella, lime, melaleuca and cilantro oils… oils also known for their powerful cleaning properties. (I add Purify to my laundry too!)

Windex 23 oz, $3.77 = $0.16/oz
DIY glass cleaner 16 oz, about $0.60 = $0.04/oz
Add 1 1/2 cups white vinegar, 1/2 distilled water, and 8 drops citrus essential oil (lemon, lime, grapefruit, wild orange, or a combination) to a 16-ounce spray bottle. Shake it up and start cleaning!
Lemon essential oil is $10.00, or $0.04 per drop. One gallon of vinegar is about $3.00, about $0.28 for 1 1/2 cups.

Cutter Skinsations Insect Repellent 6 oz, $3.97 = $0.67/oz
DIY insect repellent 8 oz, $1.92 = $0.24/oz
See the insect repellent recipe here. You will LOVE it!

There you go – fun, easy examples! Now you see why it makes sense to look at the essential oil purchase as a replacement cost (and a wise one too), rather than an additional cost. Plus, it is all non-toxic and safe for the whole family!

Definitely worth noting – I actually get a good amount of dōTERRA products for free or discounted, so I end up paying less than wholesale prices on average. Hooray! You can too! Email me at seekingwellness at fabulesslyfrugal dot com for more info, or fill out the form below.

Pennies Per Drop

One bottle of essential oil goes a long way! As you can see from the example above, you only need a few drops per use and each drop costs only pennies. The amount you use will sometimes vary depending on the oil you’re using and the desired result, but here are some general numbers for ya…

Aromatic: I usually use anywhere from 4-7 drops of essential oil in my diffusers per use. How long it lasts while diffusing will depend on the diffuser, but 4 hours is a good general number. Freshens the air and benefits everyone in the room!

Internal: First of all, do not use just any essential oil internally! This method of use is only for essential oils that are marked as safe for internal use and are only the best quality and purity. Adults 1-4 drops, children 1-2 drops per use.

Topical: When applying an oil topically, adults 3-6 drops and children 1-2 drops per use. You can dilute with fractionated coconut oil to spread those drops over a larger area, slow absorption, and to protect sensitive skin too.

Now here are some examples of the cost per drop of some of these high quality essential oils with wholesale pricing:

  • Wild Orange: $0.04 per drop
  • Peppermint: $0.08 per drop
  • On Guard: $0.13 per drop
  • Lemon: $0.04 per drop
  • Lavender: $0.08 per drop
  • Breathe: $0.08 per drop
  • Eucalyptus: $0.06 per drop
  • Lime: $0.05 per drop
  • Purify: $0.07 per drop
  • TerraShield: $0.04 per drop

There are many more essential oils too in a wide range of prices – each very effective for a variety of uses!

Healthy Living

I love using essential oils every day for myself and my family. I feel like we are all able to stay healthier throughout the year! The oils and products help me with eating right, exercise, rest, managing stress, and even have some amazing emotional benefits! Plus, we’re reducing the toxic load for my family by using these natural, safe products.

Do you see the amazing value in all of that?! I’m sure you do! I only wish I would’ve started using them earlier!

A Word About Buying Essential Oils (specifically dōTERRA) on Amazon

Never buy essential oils on Amazon! You know how much we love Amazon around here… well, there are a few things you should consider. There are fraudulent sellers on Amazon… some sellers resell dōTERRA bottles with using a little bit of the actual oil and then fill it with synthetics to dilute it so they can sell it for profit. Amazon doesn’t do quality control. I wouldn’t trust these sorts of products on Amazon. There are also sellers who purchase thousands of dollars of product from dōTERRA and they use a fraudulent credit card. Even though they may be legit oils, but you are buying stolen product AND you have no idea how they’ve been handled.

You will also miss out on the benefits of having your very own wholesale account. Every month you can get free products, and with each monthly order you will earn  as much as 30% “cash back” to use on future purchases! I love getting free product every single month and the benefits of having these in my home have been incredible.
