Amazon Prime Day 2023 Is The Best Yet – Top 10 Fab Frugal Reader Buys
Despite being hit with inflation, US consumers made Prime Day 2023 one for the record books. “The first day of Prime Day was the largest sales day in Amazon’s history, and Prime members saved more this year than any other Prime Day event,” said Doug Herrington, CEO of Amazon Stores.
The event, which ran Tuesday, July 11th and Wednesday, July 12th 2023 came at a time when people are being pressured by inflation and lagging wages. Purchasers claimed inflation and economic uncertainty did affect their Prime Day buying this year, with over half of Prime Day purchasers admitting to waiting until Prime Day to buy even household needs, just to save extra.
- Amazon said home, fashion, essentials and beauty were top-selling categories. The single best selling product was the Fire TV Stick (3rd Gen) with Alexa Voice Remote.
- Deep discounts on products such as toys and appliances drew in customers who have otherwise cut their non-essential purchases due to rising prices.
- Amazon announced that Prime Day 2023 saw Prime members buy more than 375 million items worldwide and save more than $2.5 billion. That is more than 100,000 items sold per minute during this year’s Prime Day event!
- Prime members worldwide did the most shopping from 9 a.m.—10 a.m. PT on Tuesday, July 12 during the entire Prime Day event.
- Many brands and merchants offered steep discounts, any sale on essentials was seen as a hedge against inflation, where over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 3.0 percent.
- Some of the best-selling categories in the U.S. this Prime Day were consumer electronics, household essentials, and home.
- Amazon Live Prime Day streams had more than 100 million views.
Amazon never publicly announces how much they sell on Prime Day, but analysts say this Prime Day was huge, with customers spending $12.7 billion this year.
- This is 6.1% growth compared to the $11.9 billion projected sales from Prime Day 2022.
- However, it is below Adobe’s expected growth rate of 9.5% year over year.
- Daily sales were split somewhat evenly over the two day sale, with $6.4 billion on day 1 and 6.3 billion on day 2.
- Average order size rose to $54.05 from $52.26 last year during the two-day event, according to data firm Numerator.
- Nearly 2/3 of households shopping Prime Day made at least two separate orders, with an average household spending $155.67. Nearly one in five households (18%) made five or more orders.
- Just under half of orders on July 12, 45%, were made on smartphones. That’s up from 41.5% of orders in 2022.
- More than half of Prime Day shoppers (54%) compared prices at competitors like Walmart, Target, and Best Buy
What did people buy?
- This was the best year yet for small business selling during Prime Day. Amazon’s wide selection is made possible through independent sellers—most of which are small and medium-sized businesses—and this Prime Day was the largest ever for independent sellers in Amazon’s store.
- Amazon offered more Prime Day deals on small business products than ever before, and this year, some small businesses increased their average daily sales in Amazon’s store by over 18x during the first day of the Prime Day event when compared to 2023 leading up to Prime Day.
- Prime members purchased millions of Alexa-enabled devices, including Fire TV Stick (3rd Gen) with Alexa Voice Remote, which was the best-selling product across all of Amazon worldwide.
- Prime members received early access to some deals starting from June 21. Amazon also introduced invitation-only deals, allowing customers to request an invite to shop for items expected to sell out quickly.
- The lowest prices on Amazon so far this year were offered on select products from a popular brands like Bose, Hey Dude, and Theragun.
