DIY Fruit and Veggie Wash Spray (+ Preserver)
Homemade Produce Cleaner and Preserver
I love gardening but hate sharing my fresh produce with the little creepy crawlies hiding in it. A few years ago I found recipes for a DIY veggie wash spray and preserver that works wonders.
I have used them for years and they are amazing! My fruits and vegetables come out cleaner and fresher looking than just rinsing plus they last longer. Not to mention they draw out the bugs that like to hide in produce!
This homemade vegetable and fruit cleaner also removes a lot of residue like wax, chemicals, pesticides and other matter quickly and easily. The best part is that this is a natural veggie wash so you are not ingesting any harmful chemicals.
DIY Fruit and Vegetable Cleaning Spray
I love using this natural fruit and veggie wash spray on things like apples, plums, cucumbers, and anything else that’s a bit bigger and harder to soak.
This homemade vegetable wash spray also gets rid of that waxy coating that you sometimes always find on store produce. (gross!)
DIY Veggie Wash Spray Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (I prefer to use 3 drops of doTERRA’s lemon essential oil instead, and I love to get it at wholesale pricing or even free)
- 1 tablespoon baking soda
- 1 cup of water
Directions:
- Put all ingredients into a Spray Bottle while you hold it over the sink (it will foam up a little).
- Shake gently to mix
- Spray on veggies or fruit allow to sit for about 2-5 minutes.
- Rinse under cold water.
DIY Natural Veggie Soak
For other veggies, like lettuce and berries, this produce cleaner soak is my favorite. Usually, when I would pick lettuce or parsley it would wilt quickly, not to mention the bugs that would be hiding in it. This helps with all of those issues!
I’m amazed how much dirt comes off vegetables that seem to be clean when I use this wash! It also helps produce to last longer and stays crisp and fresh! I actually use this homemade produce wash for all of my fruits and veggies and I LOVE IT!
Homemade Vegetable Soak Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup vinegar
- 2 tablespoons salt
- 3 drops of doTERRA Lemon or OnGuard essential oil
- water
Directions
-
Fill a clean sink or a Large Bowl with cold water.
-
Add in vinegar and salt, then swish around with hands (you can also do this in a large bowl).
- Place the fruit and/or veggies in and allow to sit for 10-20 minutes. This will not effect the flavor at all, the vinegar cleans and the salt draws out any little bugs, dirt and other small unwanted things, it also will remove some of the wax.
- Rinse under cold water and dry. This job is made super easy by using a colander to hold the produce while you soak it then you can drain and rinse easily.
Incorporating Essential Oils into your Natural Fruit and Vegetable Wash:
For a quick wash on a large piece of fruit, I love to just grab . It immediately gets that yucky film off of apples. I have a son who always gets an itchy head after eating apples, UNLESS we wash it. I love how quick and easy it is for on the go snacking. And since I purchased it directly from doTERRA, I don’t worry about any added synthetics or filler chemicals!
You can go HERE to purchase the three essential oils that I mentioned in this post. If you’d like to get them at wholesale prices and save an additional 25%, simply click on the “Become a Wholesale Member” button and you’ll save an extra $22.50 and you’ll be able to save on future doTERRA products, receive support and training from my team, and I’ll even show you how to earn free products every single month! You won’t find any of that if you buy your essential oils on Amazon. 🙂 Click here to buy (you will have the chance to add other products to your cart if you want to… see all the ways I use essential oils)!
Final Thoughts
I highly recommend using a fruit and vegetable cleaner on all of your produce! Ever since I started using both the spray and the soak, my produce has been cleaner and has lasted longer.
Also, if you’re looking for a high-quality colander to wash your produce in, this one is really good:
I LOVE this colander! It’s a great size for rinsing out berries, spinach, lettuce, tomatoes and more from my garden as I prepare dinner for the night!
Here’s another quick and easy way to keep your strawberries fresh for longer!

How long does this last? Do you have to make a new batch each time you want to wash your veggies?
For the spray I make a batch and leave it in the fridge, it lasts for a few months at my house. I’ve never had it go bad. For the wash I usually make it up every time. It is so easy and I usually have a lot of produce. You could mix the vinegar and salt and keep it in a jar then just measure it into water when you needed it. It shouldn’t go bad because both vinegar and salt are preservatives.
Does the soak work for fruits as well, like blueberries and strawberries? Or strictly leafy vegetables also. Looking for a soak to clean produce (as opposed to my normal faucet rinse). Thanks in advance!
It totally works for strawberries and all fruit! My strawberries last for weeks instead of days when I use this.!
Melinda ~ rinsing strawberries & other quick-to-perish produce in a vinegar solution will add longevity – several days. I leave the vinegar on the berries & rinse them just prior to eating. Rarely do I throw away moldy produce. Great product & very inexpensive. Enjoy.
Stupid Question: Do you use both the spray and soak? Or is it a personal preference to which one you use?
I use the soak for things that have potentially lots of bugs like berries or brocolli. I use the spray for fruit or veggies like apples, plums, cucumbers, you know big things. It takes the waxy coating off the store produce too.
Should say use a glass spray bottle or glass bowls. Due to lemon oil being acidic and pulls toxins out of plastic. Dont want you put toxins in your healthy fruit and veggies. Just a helpful tip.
For the spray you use a tablespoon of lemon oil?!
Good catch Kayla! Just 3 drops of essential oil instead of 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. ☺ And I added that detail to the post!
