Can You Freeze Pineapple?

Pineapple is a delicious fruit and I love when I can get my hands on some, but it doesn’t have a very long shelf life. In the fridge, a pineapple will only last about 3-4 days, if you’re lucky!

There are ways to lengthen this short shelf-life, but the only truly effective way to make your pineapple last longer is to freeze it. The question is: can you freeze fresh pineapple?

Surprisingly, yes, you can! Freezing pineapple is super easy and it tastes delicious when you are ready to eat it again. You can even munch on frozen wedges as a healthy summer snack.

So, did you score some cheap pineapple?

I took advantage of a sale and picked up 6 fresh pineapples! Now, my family is big on fresh fruit (it’s probably more than 50% of our grocery budget), but still, 6 pineapple is a lot of paradise to consume in just a few days.

That’s why I decided to freeze it to use in homemade frozen yogurt and smoothies. And just a side note…I like to use frozen fruit in smoothies so I don’t have to add ice to my smoothies. The fruit IS the ice.

So here’s how I did it. Oh, and by the way, you can do this with strawberries and other fruits too..

How to Freeze Fresh Pineapple

Step 1:

Select a ripe pineapple, preferably one that you can actually smell the sweetness when the fruit is whole.

Step 2:

Pineapple being cut

Cut the top, bottom and peel off. I used a standard chef’s knife. Or you can use this awesome Pineapple Corer!

Step 3:

Cut the core out of the pineapple and cut into slices and then chunks.

Step 4:

Place the chunks on a dry cookie sheet and put in the freezer for the better part of a day (I like lining mine with a silicone baking mat).

Step 5:

Once frozen, use a spatula to release the frozen pineapple from the cookie sheet and store in Ziploc freezer bags or containers. Make sure to label your bag with the date of the freeze. The fruit should last at least 6 months.

Now you have deliciously sweet frozen pineapple for whatever you need all summer long. So stock up! Head on over to Freddies and pick up some more pineapple paradise!
