Personally, we have used the 100 Words to Read books, Brain Quest, and the Big Workbooks at my house and I loved them all. We like to keep a few workbooks around the house for a bit of variety.
1. 100 Words Kids Need to Read by 1st Grade
This is a GREAT book for teaching your child how to read. Even if they absolutely despise reading and think it’s too hard, this book will help them approach it in a fun, easy way.
In the words of the author, the book will help them master comprehension, spelling, writing, and usage of each word. The book is really interactive as well for true hands-on learning that really sticks.
Plus, once your child passes first grade, the learning doesn’t need to stop! There’s an entire of series of the 100 Words Kids Need to Read books that you can check out to turn them into a master communicator!

2. Early Learning Activity Book
This workbook really has it all. First of all, it’s a wipe-clean book with an erasable marker which makes the workbook completely reusable and interactive. Next, it has a huge variety of activities from math lessons to drawing exercises which makes it really fun.
The only downside to this workbook is that it’s not very lefty friendly. If your child writes with their left hand, they may accidentally smear their previous writing as they move their hand around the pages.
3. First Grade Big Workbook!
This is called a BIG workbook for a reason – it’s got over 300 pages! Within those 300 pages, you’ll find exercises covering math, telling time, reading, vocabulary, and more.
Keep in mind this is just the first-grade book. There’s an entire series of School Zone Big Workbooks you can check out if your child is older or younger.
4. Brain Quest Workbook: Grade 1
The brain quest workbooks are a really popular collection of kids workbooks ranging from pre-k to grade 6. You can see the entire collection of workbooks here.
What makes these workbooks so great is that they teach a large variety of subjects in a way that parents can easily follow and explain to their children. That makes them great for homeschooling!
5. Preschool Scholar
This workbook is the second book in a series called the School Zone Scholar Workbook Series. These workbooks range from preschool to grade three and they’re super colorful and fun.
In this specific 64-page preschool scholar workbook, your child will learn reading, writing, basic math, and more, by following a fun story adventure through the zoo! Even cooler, once your child finishes the workbook you can fill out the included completion certificate to reward them for their hard work.
6. Phonics for Kindergarten Workbook
Phonics for Kindergarten is part of the Home Workbooks series which is a teacher-approved series of workbooks starting from pre-k and ending at grade three. These workbooks are relatively short (64 pages) and easy to go through, so your kid will have a lot of fun with them! They even come with stickers. 🙂
7. Summer Bridge Activities, Grades 1-2
The Summer Bridge Activities workbooks go from pre-k all the way up to grade eight and they’re designed to help prevent summer learning loss. It’s been proven that children forget math skills and potentially reading/spelling skills the most over summer break, and these workbooks can help prevent that in just 15 minutes per day.
Each Summer Bridge Activities workbook is teacher-recommended and comes with monthly goals to help your child stay on track. The workbooks even come with stickers, flashcards, and a certificate of completion to keep your kids motivated.
8. Summer Express Between Second and Third Grade
The Summer Express workbooks are another set of workbooks that are designed to help keep your child’s mind fresh over summer. However, you could use them during the school year as well if you want.
This particular Between Second and Third Grade workbook is set up for your child to complete two pages a day, five days a week, so it’s pretty light. The topics they cover are vocabulary, grammar, writing, reading, and math.
9. Summer Study Daily Activity Workbook: Grade 2
This is another summer workbook, but this one was created by Flash Kids, who have created an entire set of Summer Study Daily Activity Workbooks from kindergarten to grade 5. This particular one features 90 alternating math and reading activities to keep them busy all summer!
Along with this workbook, Flash Kids also has complete curriculum workbooks covering entire grades, skill-specific workbooks like Subtraction, and more workbooks that you can find here.
