VidAngel Review: Tips, Personal Experience & a Deal to Try VidAngel
Our Honest VidAngel Review After 5+ Years
We’ve used VidAngel for years and it has made watching TV a much more pleasant experience. Even shows you’d expect to be “safe” can surprise you—VidAngel lets me filter out language, explicit scenes, violence, and other moments I simply don’t want me or my family to see or hear. Because of this, I can watch far more of the movies and buzz-worthy shows everyone is talking about without all the extras I don’t want. I also get more value from the streaming services I’m already paying for because there are fewer shows I have to skip entirely. It has been a total game changer for family movie night, the kids watching on their own, and my own watch list. 🙌
Streaming has made it incredibly easy to find something to watch. My daughter was actually horrified when she learned that TV used to mean “only repeats in the summer” and racing back from the other room when the commercial break ended because if you missed it, you missed it!
But there is one thing I miss about those days: TV felt a lot easier to make family-friendly. Now, plenty of really good movies and shows include nudity, sexual content, profanity, graphic violence, disturbing scenes, and other content we just don’t want to see or hear.
And sometimes it’s the show you don’t expect that catches you off guard. That’s one of the biggest reasons I still use VidAngel after all these years. I don’t want to sit with the remote in my hand wishing I could have muted something or fast-forwarded through a scene.
That’s where VidAngel comes in. Below I’ll show you exactly how VidAngel works, what streaming services and devices it supports, some of the popular shows you can filter right now, and the features we’ve found most useful.

What is VidAngel?
VidAngel is a streaming filtering service that works with supported movies and TV shows from streaming services you already pay for. Instead of replacing Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV+, or your other subscriptions, VidAngel connects to them and lets you choose what you want automatically muted or skipped.
You can choose filters for things like language, intimacy and sexual content, nudity, violence, substances, disturbing content, and more. The important part is that you decide what you want filtered. What bothers one family may be completely different from what bothers another.
VidAngel also includes a small library of licensed family-friendly content, including select content from Angel Studios such as The Wingfeather Saga, Freelancers, Homestead, Testament, Tuttle Twins, and select Dry Bar Comedy specials. I absolutely love Dry Bar for clean laughs!
How Does VidAngel Work?
Whether it’s a movie or a TV show, VidAngel gives you control over what you see and hear.
Filter options can include:
- Profanity and specific types of language
- Sexual content and intimacy
- Nudity
- Violence and gore
- Disturbing images
- Drug and alcohol use
- Blasphemy
- Other show-specific content
Language filters generally mute the audio when the unwanted word or phrase occurs, while visual filters skip the portion of the scene you’ve chosen not to see. The filtering happens automatically while you’re watching, which is SO much better than trying to predict when you need to grab the remote.
You can also customize filters for individual shows. Maybe I don’t mind the action in a particular movie but don’t want the language. Or maybe I’m watching something with my kids and want significantly more filtering than I would use on my own. That’s what makes VidAngel different from simply relying on a TV or movie rating.
Popular Shows to Watch with VidAngel Right Now
This is one of my favorite things about VidAngel: it opens up shows I might otherwise decide aren’t worth watching because of the language, violence, or explicit scenes.
If you’re wondering what to watch on VidAngel right now, these are some popular titles worth searching for:
- Bridgerton – Keep the romance, costumes, drama, and story while filtering sexual content, nudity, and other content you don’t want.
- Reacher – Great if you like action and suspense but would rather tone down the violence, profanity, or other mature content.
- Lioness – A tense CIA thriller that’s much easier to customize when you can decide how much language and violence you want to see.
- Outer Banks – Filter profanity, violence, sexual content, and other mature elements while keeping the treasure hunts and Pogues drama.
- Yellowstone – This is exactly the kind of show VidAngel is useful for. You can enjoy the story while filtering the strong language, violence, and sexual content you don’t want.
- Landman – Another Taylor Sheridan show with a great cast and story but plenty of mature content that you may prefer to filter.
- The Night Agent – A fast-moving conspiracy thriller that’s a good option if you like suspense but want more control over the content.
- Outlander – VidAngel can be especially helpful here if the sexual content and nudity have kept you from watching the series.
Important: VidAngel does not filter every title on every streaming service. Availability changes and filters are built for individual titles, so search VidAngel for the specific movie, season, or episode you want to watch.
Can You Watch Bridgerton Without the Sex Scenes?
Yes! This is probably one of my favorite examples of why I use VidAngel. If you’ve wondered how to filter Bridgerton or how to watch Bridgerton without the sex scenes, VidAngel lets you connect your Netflix account and choose filters for sexual content, nudity, language, and other categories.
I can keep the story, gorgeous costumes, romance, family drama, and all the things people are talking about without sitting there wondering when the next explicit scene is coming. All four seasons of Bridgerton have been available with VidAngel filters, including Season 4.
That’s exactly what I mean when I say VidAngel has allowed me to watch so many more of the shows everyone else is talking about. I don’t necessarily want to skip the show. I just want to skip certain parts of it!
VidAngel Parental Controls: Lock the Filters You Don’t Want Changed
This is a really useful feature for families. VidAngel now offers Parental Controls with locked filters.
You can choose the filters you want locked across your account and protect them with a parental passcode. Those locked filters apply across profiles and can’t simply be changed by a child who decides they’d rather turn one off.
This is different from regular Default Filters. Default Filters make watching more convenient, while Parental Controls are designed to keep selected filters locked. If your kids ever use VidAngel without you sitting next to them, this is a feature worth setting up.
Check VidAngel Content Guides Before You Watch
Another newer feature I really like is VidAngel Content Guides. Instead of relying only on a vague TV rating, these guides help you understand what is actually in a movie or show before you commit to watching it.
The guides can include a visual overview of available filters, information about the show, and themes, tones, or potentially sensitive storylines. VidAngel has created Content Guides for popular titles including Bridgerton, Outlander, and Reacher, with more being added.
For me, this solves another part of the streaming problem: I want to know what I’m getting into before I press play. A TV-MA or TV-14 rating doesn’t necessarily tell me which part of the content earned that rating or whether it’s something I personally care about.
Can’t Find a Show? VidAngel Has a New Request Portal
This is brand new and actually useful! If the movie or show you want isn’t available to filter, VidAngel now has an improved Request Portal.
In the past, you could request a title but didn’t really know what happened afterward. Now you can follow the status of the request:
- Received – VidAngel received your request.
- In Progress – Their team is working on it.
- Completed – The title is available for filtering.
- Blocked – VidAngel is unable to provide filters for that title.
You can also receive updates as the request moves through the process. That’s a big improvement over submitting a request and wondering whether anyone ever saw it.
Another handy update: VidAngel has added search by actor. If you can’t remember the name of the movie but you know who’s in it, you have another way to find what you’re looking for.
There are some titles VidAngel legally cannot filter. Under its current agreements, VidAngel says it cannot filter content from Disney, Lucasfilm, Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, and their subsidiaries. So if a requested title is blocked, that may be why.
Watch VidAngel in Action
Still wondering how VidAngel actually works? Here’s a quick video from VidAngel that gives you a much better idea of what happens when you filter a show:
What Streaming Services Work with VidAngel?
VidAngel currently works with select titles from:
- Apple TV+
- Netflix
- Paramount+
- Peacock
- Amazon Prime Video – including rent/buy and subscription titles
- Amazon Add-on Channels:
- AMC+
- BritBox
- Hallmark+
- MGM+
- Paramount+
- PBS Masterpiece
- STARZ
Important: VidAngel doesn’t replace these subscriptions. You need an active subscription or access to the title through the supported streaming service, then connect that service to VidAngel.
Also, not every title from a supported service can automatically be filtered. VidAngel creates filters for individual movies and shows and continues adding new titles.
Set Up Default Filters
Within your VidAngel account, you can set Default Filters for the things you normally don’t want to see or hear.
Default Filters are profile-specific and apply automatically to new titles you start watching. You can still adjust the filters for an individual movie or episode when you want something different.
I love this because I don’t want to go through a giant filter list every single time we start something new. Set your normal preferences once, then customize when needed.
How Much Does VidAngel Cost?
VidAngel’s regular direct subscription options are:
- $9.99/month when you subscribe directly through VidAngel.com
- $99.99/year – the discounted annual rate is equivalent to getting about two months free compared with paying monthly
One thing to know: VidAngel subscriptions billed through Apple, Google Play, or Roku currently cost $11.99/month because of third-party platform fees. If you’re paying monthly, subscribing directly through VidAngel.com is less expensive.
Don’t pay the regular price yet!
For Labor Day, new subscribers can get 3 months for just $3/month with code FRUGAL.
VidAngel Supported Devices
You can use VidAngel on:
- Apple TV
- Roku
- Google and Android TV devices
- Fire TV and Fire TV Stick devices (excluding Fire TV Stick 4K Select running Vega OS)
- iPhone and iPad
- Android phones and tablets
- Computer through the VidAngel website
Note about ads: Streaming plans with ads are not supported when using VidAngel on Roku or while casting.
Can You Cast VidAngel to Your TV?
Yes. Using the VidAngel mobile app, you can cast to compatible TVs with:
- Chromecast or TVs with Chromecast built in
- AirPlay to AirPlay 2-enabled devices
How to Create a VidAngel Account and Get Started
Step 1. Create an Account
Start by creating your VidAngel account. For the Labor Day promotion, make sure you’re using code FRUGAL to get your first three months for $3/month.
Step 2. Connect Your Streaming Services
Next, connect the supported streaming services you already subscribe to. Remember, VidAngel isn’t giving you a Netflix or Prime Video subscription—it adds filtering to eligible content you already have access to.
Step 3. Start Browsing Movies and Shows
The titles you see on VidAngel depend on your connected services and which titles currently have filters available.
Step 4. Select Your Filters and Press Play!
When you choose a title, you can review:
- Information about the movie or show
- The filters available for that title
- Which filters you currently have turned on
- Where the title is available to stream
You can then turn individual filters on or off based on exactly what you want to see or hear. Each movie and show has different filter options.
VidAngel Review: Is VidAngel Worth It?
After using VidAngel for more than five years, yes, I still think VidAngel is worth it—especially if there are movies and shows you want to watch but keep skipping because of explicit scenes, profanity, violence, or other content.
For me, this isn’t just about making TV “safe for kids.” I use VidAngel for my own watch list, too. There are plenty of popular shows with great stories that I genuinely want to watch. I simply don’t want every single thing the producers decided to put in them.
And that may be the biggest reason we’ve kept VidAngel for 5+ years: watching TV is simply more pleasant. I’m not bracing for the next scene, grabbing for the remote, or abandoning an otherwise good series. I choose what I don’t want, VidAngel handles it, and I can actually enjoy the show.
I also really like the direction VidAngel is going with features like Parental Controls, Content Guides, the improved Request Portal, and actor search. Those make it easier not only to filter what you’re watching, but to decide what to watch in the first place.
If you’re already paying for Netflix, Prime Video, Peacock, Paramount+, Apple TV+, or supported Amazon channels but avoiding a lot of their content, VidAngel can also help you get more value out of subscriptions you’re already paying for.
Bottom line: If you’ve ever said, “I’d watch that if it weren’t for all the language,” “I really want to watch that, but I don’t want the sex scenes,” or “I wish there were a clean version of this show,” VidAngel is absolutely worth trying.

How many TVs in a household does vidangel work with a subscription?
Great question, Susan. I’m guessing it works with all of the devices that you can use your streaming on. But for a sure answer, I would go to the vidangel site and use their “help” feature or “live chat” to verify with them.
I’m sure this was asked but I cannot find on my phone. Will VidAngel work with Roku or will I have to mirror my phone to the tv?
Here are some instructions about how to add VidAngel to Roku: https://support.vidangel.com/hc/en-us/articles/115010507228-How-Do-I-Use-VidAngel-on-My-Roku- I hope this helps!
Thanks so much for the review and information!
Can I use VidAngel on movies in my personal amazon library?
Hi Stan, as long as it’s in the VidAngel library, it will work with what you’ve already purchased on Amazon.
Does VidAngel work on YouTube and Hulu? So I understand it, any movie I watch via my Firestick can be censored even if it is through IMbD, Hulu or YouTube?
Hi Robin, unfortunately not every movie can be censored. Vidangel doesn’t have the rights to filter movies from Disney, Hulu, HBO, and others. (You can read more about it here: https://blog.vidangel.com/2021/05/24/why-we-dont-do-disney/).
Is there still a fee per movie in addition to the monthly service fee?
In the past, VidAngel required you to ‘purchase’ the rights to a movie (ie. own the movie) in order for them to filter the content. Does that condition still apply?
If you have a subscription to Amazon Prime (which gives access to thousands of videos) do you still have to pay per video to watch filtered content?
Hi Frank, from what I understand, you need to have a subscription to the streaming service that the movie /tv show is on as well as a VidAngel subscription. The only services connected to VidAngel are Amazon and Netflix. There are some movies that you can purchase through VidAngel to watch as well.
My Tv’s are connected to Xfinity via a cable. Will Vidangel work with this type of system or do I need a fire stick? If so, how do I find Vidangel on the different TV’s I have? Sorry, I’m not real techy. 🙂
Hi Joseph, great question! You can use VidAngel on their website, on your TV with a compatible device, or on their mobile app. You can view the compatible devices here: https://vidangelsupport.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360055415792-How-Do-I-Get-Started-with-VidAngel-. Unfortunately it looks like Xfinity isn’t included in that list. So if you have a fire stick, you will want to search the VidAngel service to access it on your TV. Let me know if you have any more questions!
Does it work on any movie I select on Netflix, or does it only work on certain ones you have selected?
Hi Gale, most movies on Netflix should work with Netflix. If you aren’t finding it, that could mean several things. It’s likely that they just don’t have the title available yet. You can read more about this here: https://vidangelsupport.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360056004872-Why-can-t-I-find-a-movie-or-show-
When I choose a movie on Vidangel and try to watch it (offered through Amazon, which I have a membership in and have connected), I get a messaage that the provider has blocked the video. Why?
Great question, Cheryl. I’m not sure. Have you tried reaching out to VidAngel for an answer?
What is the number to call if I wish to cancel
Hi Pat,
Here is how to quickly cancel your VidAngel subscription: https://vidangelsupport.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360056040051-How-Do-I-Cancel-My-Subscription-
can i filter a movie or a video from my pc, i mean from a video already downloaded or owned, like from desktop.
I am unsure! They have awesome customer service, I would reach out to ask.
If I have a smart tv how dose it work with it?
Hi Rebecca,
You connect each streaming service to VidAngel (i.e. Amazon Prime video, Netflix) so your smart tv will work. Reach out to ViddAngel for help setting it up — they have fab customer service. Hope this helps.
I watch prime thru my son’s acct. If I have vidangel myself, can his acct be filtered
I have been quite disappointed with my attempts to use VidAngel this year (2022). While the Support Staff have been very responsive to my concerns, for me the product is really not ready for prime time. Closed-captioning was available only for some of the movies/shows we wanted to use and sometimes the words that were removed still displayed in the CC. We also had insurmountable issues staying connected to streaming vendors (for us this included Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Apple +). It’s a great concept but for our experiences this year, technically it’s just not a good product. I hope they’ll be able to resolve the issues we experienced.
Hi. Will always we need to select filters for each movie?
Are there any standard filters that are always in place without us having to manually select them?
Thanks
Hi.
Are there any standard filters that are always in place without us having to manually select them?
Thanks
Does it work in Canada?
