What to Do Before Cleaning Your Bathroom

I’m sure you already have your own bathroom cleaning routine that you follow, but if you don’t, we have a couple of tips that may save you some time and help you get organized.

First, before you read the bathroom cleaning hacks below, it may help to write down a list of things you want to get done. Writing the tasks down on paper where you can see them all in one place can be a great stress reliever.

Once you know what needs to be cleaned you can gather your supplies and get ready. However, we recommend reading the tips below BEFORE doing that as we’ll be going over some natural homemade cleaners that you may want to try out!

10 Bathroom Cleaning Tips and Tricks

All of the bathroom cleaning tips and tricks below are in order of recommended cleaning. You don’t have to follow the exact same order, but you probably don’t want to wipe your bathroom floor or toilet and then use the same rag to wipe your counter or sink faucet! Ew!

1. Clear Your Bathroom Fan

Your bathroom fan was built to suck out that smelly bathroom odor and expel it outside, but what good is it going to do if it’s clogged with dust? Absolutely no good.

Luckily, there’s a really easy trick you can use to clean your bathroom fan, and all you need is a can of air. Once you have it, simply turn your bathroom fan on, spray the can of air into it and the dust will go up into the fan and outside.

2. Easy Glass and Mirror Cleaner

Mirrors and glass are grub collectors. They collect things like fingerprints, toothpaste, and soap, and on top of that, the residue usually gets smeared around if it’s not cleaned off quickly.

To deal with this, you’ll need a good glass cleaner that can get rid of those things while giving you a nice clear finish. You don’t want something that leaves streaks!

If you don’t have any store-bought glass cleaner on hand and you don’t want to buy anything, you can use our homemade glass cleaner solution. This is a really easy (and cheap) solution to make (only 4 ingredients) and it works really well.

3. Cheap Shower Cleaning Hack

DIY shower cleaner spray

The tub/shower is an area of the bathroom that can collect a ton of gunk and soap scum. If you let it sit for too long, all that residue can take some real elbow grease to remove!

There’s an easier way though. Instead of using an ineffective cleaner and breaking a sweat trying to scrub and scrub, you can use our simple 2-ingredient tub and shower cleaner.

Not only is it easy to make, but it’s easy to use too. Just spray it all over your tub/shower and make sure to let it sit for 10 minutes or so. When you come back to wipe it down you’ll find that the grub wipes away with ease.

You can also use this solution to clean your shower head if you notice that it’s a bit clogged. Just grab a small plastic bag, fill it with the solution, and wrap it around the shower head with an elastic. Then just let it sit and wipe it down afterward.

Also, don’t forget about the shower curtain! Reader’s Digest has a tutorial on how you can clean your shower curtain easily in the washing machine. Just throw it in with 2 bath towels so the curtain doesn’t get wrecked.

4. Remove Soap Scum

If you find that the tub/shower cleaner above is too soapy and/or you’re looking for something else to clean your sinks/shower/tub with, this is the solution! This is really easy to make too (only 3 ingredients) and it works great against soap scum.

You can even use this soap scum remover on your glass shower doors and on your shower head.

5. Clear Clogged Drains with Ease

Drain cleaner

A clogged drain can be a real pain. Sometimes no matter how much hot water you run down the drain, or how hard you plunge it, the clog just won’t go away. That’s when you know it’s time to bring out the big guns!

One of my favorite ways to clear a clogged drain extremely easily is to use this 2-ingredient natural drain cleaner. You basically pour the solution into the drain, let it sit, pour some boiling water down, and your clog should be gone just like that.

This solution isn’t just for your sink either, you can use it in your shower, tub or any other drain too. Goodbye, nasty clogs!

6. Eliminate Urine Smell

How to get rid of urine smell in the bathroom

One of the worst things you can have in your bathroom is a lingering aroma of smelly pee. Yuck! Unfortunately, this is a pretty common problem and it’s hard to find a solution that works effectively.

You can try using your regular cleaning products but most of the time, the smell returns a few days or even a few hours later. So what can you do?

Well, you can start by grabbing a couple of lemons. Yup! Lemons. There is an easy all-natural way to remove urine smell from the bathroom and it all starts with squeezing some lemon juice.

7. Make Your Own Toilet Deodorizers

Toilet deodorizers are these little bombs (sort of like bath bombs but less pretty) that you can throw in your toilet to quickly and easily remove odors and sanitize. They’re pretty great to have on-hand during those moments when you don’t feel like doing a full toilet clean.

8. Organize Drawers and Cupboards for Cheap

After you’ve cleaned everything thoroughly, one of the last tasks on your to-do list may be to organize the cupboards and drawers in your bathroom. These areas can easily become disorganized over time as things get shoved around and busy mornings cause us to rush and forget to put things back in the right place.

If you want to clean your cupboards and drawers in a way that will make them easier to keep clean in the future, buying some simple containers from the dollar store can help out a ton. Just find some containers that fit your spaces, organize the items into the containers, and you’ll notice a huge difference!

9. Clean the Floor

One of the last things to clean is the bathroom floor. This is the area of the bathroom that’s easy to avoid because it’s the largest and sometimes it’s the most tedious to clean. But it doesn’t have to be!

Better Homes & Gardens wrote a great guide on how to clean a bathroom floor faster, and they outline 3 important steps to take:

  • Step 1: Start by sweeping from the edges to the inside of the floor. Use a wet piece of toilet paper or a rag to wipe up the dust.
  • Step 2: Mix your floor cleaner in the sink to save time and space (easy floor cleaner recipe: 1/2 cup white distilled vinegar, 1/2 cup lemon juice, 2 cups hot water). Use a rag to scrub the floor.
  • Step 3: Lay a towel on the floor and stand on it while shimmying around to dry the floor.

That’s really all it takes! If you have tile floors it will take a bit more work but Better Homes & Gardens has some tricks for that too.

10. Freshen Your Towels

Homemade laundry soap

You can really do this step at the very beginning of the bathroom cleaning process or at the end. Sometimes it’s more convenient to do it at the beginning since the towels will then be cleaned by the time you’re finished!

Either way, to freshen up your towels just throw them in the wash like usual. If you want to save some money you can try using our homemade laundry soap recipe instead of the store-bought stuff.

If you’ve noticed that a towel seems to be reaching the end of its lifespan, don’t throw it out too fast! Check out these frugal ways to reuse old towels and sheets.
