Now sure, you could go to the store and buy a candle for $20, OR you can think of a more frugal efficient way to fill your home with an autumn scent! Don’t worry, today I have the perfect DIY air freshener that will leave your entire house smelling amazing!
How to Make the Best DIY Fall Air Freshener
Here’s an amazing trick to permeate your home with a festive fall smell, and the best thing about it is it’s completely SIMPLE and CHEAP. I made this entire DIY with things I already had in my cupboards.
I’m all about providing you with DIYs that are simple, useful, and affordable and this one just might be on the top of the list!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 mug
- 2 tsp Vanilla Extract (imitation vanilla extract works fine too)
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2-4 cloves (It is better to use whole cloves, but I only had ground)
Step 1. Heat the oven to 300 degrees F.
Step 2. Add 2 teaspoons of Vanilla Extract to your mug.
I like to add this first just so that when I add the powders, it can be quickly absorbed by the liquids.
NOTE: I realize that the price of vanilla has skyrocketed over the last year or so you can totally do this with a nice imitation vanilla!
Step 3. Add 1/2 teaspoon of Nutmeg and Cinnamon to the mixture!
I like to give it a little stir after I add the nutmeg and cinnamon just so that the vanilla and the powders can mix nicely.
Step 4. Add 2-4 Cloves and Mix!
Adding whole cloves is ideal! But, as I said earlier I only had ground cloves on hand and it worked just fine. I just added a 1/2 teaspoon and my house still filled with the scent.
Adding whole cloves would be better, but just use what you have on hand. Once everything is added, be sure to stir it all up and mix it nicely.
Step 5. Place the mug in the oven
I left mine in the oven for about an hour. I was worried that the mixture could burn, but it didn’t! It just hardened!
You will begin to notice the smell filling your home about 20 minutes into the process. My husband actually came home and saw the oven on and said, “what are you baking?” and I had to break the news that it was just some spices in a mug! haha
Enjoy This DIY Air Freshener Trick!
This is such a simple and fun DIY! If you do not have all the above ingredients, it will work if you leave things out. The vanilla is essential, but you can mix and match the other spices!
Be sure to try this one out! It is wonderful and is the best way to fill your home with that Fall fragrance without spending loads of money on expensive candles that release chemicals into the air!
Other Cheap Air Freshener Methods

- Nannangel79 says she added some water to the mixture and microwaved it, then just left it on a table in the house!
- Kristin said she made a stovetop air freshener with this mixture for the same effect!
- Kelse says this DIY air freshener works great in a mini crockpot!

I always simmer while spices and fruit peels in a small pot to get the same effect! Cardamom pods, cinnamon sticks, vanilla beans and orange peel is my favorite!
I simmer mine on the stove top also…seems like a waste to run the oven for an hour for this, unless it is really cold and you are doing it for the heat also.
Plus, if you do it on the stove top, it adds some moisture to the air, which a lot of us need once the heater starts going! It does, however, need more attention that way because it will evaporate and burn your pot. So I guess it depends how busy you are!! 🙂
I found that doing a regular or mini crockpot works really well for this!
Great tip Kelse, thank you!
I would be concerned about it evaporating and damaging the mug. I would do it in an over safe bowl with extra water (double the spices) or on the stovetop
I love this idea and I think you have our stove too :).
What about putting it all in one of those little crockpots? I think I’ll try that today…
I tried this and did not like the way it left the mug, but great smell though. Will not try this again.
What did it do to the mug?
All the residue dried out at the bottom of the cup and made it very hard to remove, and I did not even leave it for the recommended full hour.
Ugg… that’s a bummer!
We are temporarily living in a camper and I did something similar. Instead of using the oven and wasting propane, I added some water and microwaves it for a few minutes then set the cup on a hot pad on the table and it worked wonderfully!!
Awesome! Love your hack!
I am going to try this today but I will line the inside of the cup or small bowl with foil to make for easy cleanup.
Great tip Lynda!
I realize all these comments are old, but if someone can tell me: I am experimenting with simmering potpourris. I am giving mini crockpots as gifts to go with my mixtures. Can you really use imitation vanilla extract? Because by golly, real vanilla is hella expensive! I am using it with lavender buds and flowers, and hoping to find cedar oil as well.
