CopyCat: TacoTime Cinnamon Crustos Recipe!
I have to admit that I’ve been known to order more than I should at TacoTime just to get the free Cinnamon Crustos. I LOVE these things! There’s nothing like the light, crisp, yummy goodness that is a cinnamon crusto! Last night I had a crazy craving for these and I wasn’t about to go out and get them; First off, it’s just about 10 degrees outside and I don’t want to bundle up and two, I’m pretty sure TacoTime is closed already. So, I figured out how to make them on my own. And guess what? It’s unbelievably easy!
Here’s what you’re going to need:
- Flour Tortillas (don’t use corn!)
- Cinnamon Sugar Mix (or use 1/2 cup cinnamon and 1/2 cup sugar mixed together)
- Deep fryer (or pan filled with about an inch of vegetable oil)
If you are using a deep fryer, set it to 300* and let it warm up. If you are using a pan, fill it with an inch of oil and turn your stove on to medium heat.
Now, tear a few flour tortillas into large pieces. Do not use corn tortillas! Flour tortillas are the secret to getting that light, flaky texture. Tear up as many as you wish.
I used four tortillas to get the amount in the pictures.
Add your tortilla pieces to your frying basket and drop basket into heated oil. If you’re not using a deep fryer, add your pieces to your pan.
Let the tortillas sit for about two minutes before you flip your pieces. You may not need to do this is you’re using a deep fryer but it will ensure that both sides of the tortilla get some time in the oil.
Your pieces should start to look like this after about 5 minutes of sitting in the oil. Notice they are only slightly darker than they were from the start.
Remember, since you’re using flour tortillas, they will not turn brown like corn tortillas would. You will know your pieces are ready when you can no longer puncture them with a fork. DO NOT let them sit for longer than about 8 or 9 minutes. Any longer and they may lose their flaky texture.
Once your tortillas are ready, place them on a paper-towel lined plate.
Do not blot off the extra oil. This is what your cinnamon sugar mix is going to stick to!
Now, pour a generous helping of cinnamon sugar over the top of your fried tortillas!
Flip your pieces over and repeat!
That’s it! You’ve just made your own Cinnamon Crustos! YUMMY!!!
Just be warned, these are hard to stop eating!

I love your idea…especially during National Diet Week. Yesterday I went into Walgreens to buy their Simply Slim capsules. They were out of stock, so instead I bought 7 tins of Mrs. Fields Chocolates using a $10 Register Reward. Sound like I must try this recipe too, before I get more serious about improving my health.
Going to try this tonite but going to use pie dough instead.
How’d using the pie dough turn out, Mary?
I wanna know too!
I did this in a frying pan and had it on medium heat as directed. Within about 15-20 seconds the tortilla pieces started to brown so I flipped them then removed them after another 15-20 seconds. They turned out golden brown. Delicious but I think I may need to drop the temp a little next time.
That’s strange! It has worked for us at this temperature but maybe drop it to low and see what happens! So sorry this didn’t work out!
Has anyone made ‘Crustos’ with an air fryer and if so how?
