How to Clean and Protect Your Granite the Easy Way

How to Clean, Seal, and Polish Granite Easily

I think we all know that granite is an investment. It costs more than other options because it is durable, stain-resistant, sanitary, beautiful, and able to withstand a lot of heat.

Because granite costs so much, it’s important that you take care of it, clean it, and maintain it properly. There are some steps you really must take to protect your investment and keep it at its best.

With most natural stone, you need to clean it regularly and seal it too. I have granite counter tops in my bathrooms and some marble tile around my fireplace and in the back splash in my kitchen, so learning how to clean granite and take care of it properly is important for me.

Step 1. Clean

Above is a photo of my granite bathroom counter before cleaning. Pretty dirty. It is my husband’s side of the vanity area. Haha. For some reason, his side always gets dirtier.

I spray on the Rock Doctor Granite Cleaner and the mess easily wipes away with a paper towel. But that isn’t too impressive, right? Almost any cleaner can do a decent job of cleaning the gunk off a bathroom counter. However, a lot of them are not the best products for natural stone surfaces.

I had been using a typical bathroom cleaner on my granite before. It cleaned the surface well enough, but it seemed to leave a film or dull the finish or something because I noticed a difference right away after using the Rock Doctor Cleaner. The counter feels more shiny, fresh and truly clean! Here’s how it looks:

Step 2. Seal

Granite Sealer! I sealed all of the granite and other natural stone in my home when we moved in (a few years ago), but have been putting off doing it again because it was kind of a pain.

I could tell it was time to seal again though because the water seemed to be soaking into the granite and it just looked like it needed some love. Onto my to-do list it went and there it stayed for a while.

Previously when I sealed my granite, I had to make sure the surfaces were all clean, then I’d get a sponge or cloth and dump some sealer from a jug, wipe it on and let it sit for hours, and so on. It felt tedious and inconvenient.

Then Rock Doctor asked if I would be willing to try out and review their Stone Care System. Yay! Perfect timing and the products are so much easier than what I had used before.

Before using the Rock Doctor granite sealer:

It is a little tricky to get photos showing the water, but I hope you can tell the difference because I sure did. The photo above is water on the granite after I cleaned, but before I sealed.

After using the Rock Doctor granite sealer:

The photo below is after two applications of the sealer. I expect that if I use the sealer each year, I will only need to do one application each time in the future.

Cleaning and Protecting Granite is Easy With the Right Tools

Clean the surface with the Rock Doctor Cleaner, spray on the Sealer, let sit for a few minutes, wipe off, then let dry for at least 30 minutes. I can totally handle that!

Then just continue to use the cleaner regularly, and the Granite Polish once or twice a week to keep it looking awesome and protected too.

Seriously, I notice a big difference! My granite looks better than ever. So shiny and it is repelling water a lot better! My kids end up getting A LOT of water on the bathroom counters whenever they wash their hands, so it is really easy for me to notice the improvement. 😉
