DIY Coconut Oil Conditioner Recipe
Once you learn how to make this DIY coconut oil conditioner recipe you’ll never want to go back to the store-bought stuff again! It’s easy to make, smells fantastic, and has tons of benefits.
Why You Should Make Your Own Conditioner
Although natural, non-toxic hair conditioners are becoming more popular, there are still a ton of hair care products out there that contain harmful ingredients. And even if you want to transition to something more organic, it will typically cost you a pretty penny.
Add on top of that the fact that making homemade conditioner can seem like a daunting task and it’s no wonder most people continue using potentially toxic products!
That being said, I’m glad you landed on this post because today, I’m going to share one of my favorite homemade conditioner recipes: a super simple and frugal DIY coconut oil conditioner with a lovely lavender scent.
How to Make Coconut Oil Conditioner
If you already have the ingredients for this recipe on hand, you can whip it up faster than it would take to go to the store and buy conditioner. That’s how quick it is. It only takes me about 10 minutes!
Plus, the ingredients are all fantastic for your hair. Check it out:
Ingredients
This recipe only requires four ingredients: coconut oil (of course), jojoba oil, vitamin E oil, and lavender essential oil.
What do all of these ingredients do? Well, each one carries a set of benefits:
- First off, making conditioner with coconut oil is pretty common because it’s AMAZING for your hair. It’s natural, moisturizing, helps stimulate hair growth, slows hair loss, and more.
- The jojoba oil then adds on top of these benefits. Similarly to coconut oil, jojoba helps moisturize and strengthen hair with its various vitamins and minerals (source).
- The vitamin E piles on more goodness as it helps protect your hair, promotes blood circulation in the scalp, and more.
- And finally, as the cherry on top, the lavender essential oil adds an amazing, calming fragrance. It also helps promote hair growth, prevent bacteria and fungi, and more.
Needless to say, this stuff is pretty great! Let’s learn how to make it:
Step 1. Add the Ingredients to a Mixer
Nothing complicated here! Grab your food mixer and add all the ingredients right in there.
Step 2. Mix
Set the mixer to low and leave it for about 8 minutes. As it is mixing, it should lowly turn into more of a creamy mixture. This is a perfect consistency for both hair conditioner and lotion.
Step 3. Transfer to Storage
This recipe makes 16oz of conditioner. You can either put it all in one 16oz container, or you can do what I did: I chose to make 2 small 8oz jars – one for my hair and one for lotion.
As I quickly mentioned above, this recipe doubles as a coconut oil lotion AND conditioner. I don’t know if it was originally intended for that, but it makes your skin soft and smooth and smells oh so good, so why not?
Using the Coconut Conditioner
I’m sure you know how to use conditioner so I’ll keep this short and simple! You don’t need to use too much of this DIY coconut conditioner. A small amount will do the job just fine.
I have very thick shoulder-length hair and used about the size of a dime on the lower half of my hair. It took a minute to really work the tiny amount through all my hair, but was worth it in the end.
The shower then smelled so soothing. It’s so luxurious and seriously makes you feel like you are at the spa! Afterward, as my hair dried, it became silky soft and smooth. I will definitely be using this again!
Final Thoughts
This homemade coconut conditioner smells so heavenly! I adore coconut for its taste and smell, and I had to remind myself it wasn’t food! Haha.
All in all, I was very impressed with this DIY conditioner concoction! Especially with its versatility!

I love coconut! I’ve read so much about using ACV as a conditioner. I went on Bragg’s website and they said after using the ACV and rinsing it out to follow up with the light conditioner. this one looks so easy to make and it’s a rinse out. Most I’ve seen you have to leave in for at least 10 minutes. I don’t have time for that. I want to get some jasmine essential oil and try that instead of lavender. Definitely saving this recipe. Thank you!
Glad to hear it! Let me know how it turns out!
I love coconut oil, so far it’s provided me with the best relief for my itchy scalp. However, it can be a bit heavy on my hair and it is difficult to wash off. I was wondering if this combination would be different since it it is 100% oils. Any view on this would be appreciated! Thank you!
Hi Calin, I would just use a little bit, and keep it ot the bottom portion of your hair if you can. For example, I have very thick shoulder-length hair and used about the size of a dime on the lower half of my hair. It took a minute to really work the tiny amount through all my hair, but was worth it in the end.
I live in a humid country daily about 32c in the day time . Will this melt? Or should I keep in the fridge.
Even the coconut oil we purchased here is liquidy in room temperature
Do you rinse this off or leave it in?
Wash it out. 🙂
Does this recipe have an expiration or self life?
I’d use it as long as it doesn’t smell rancid! 🙂 You may need to give it a good stir to blend some of the separated oils. Otherwise, it should be fie!
You say to ‘wash it out’. So, use this conditioner BEFORE I shampoo?
I’d wash, use the conditioner, and then depending on how your hair reacts, you may need to use some shampoo to remove any oil residue.
Well, I’ve had a go making it today and will try it tomorrow morning. Will update with the outcome! Thanks for sharing!
Do you add water to this or what? It’s super greasy and I’ve tried so many different ways
Hi Lyndsey,
No water as it would not mix in. I have fine hair, and something like this I would only use sparingly, and probably only on the ends. If you find it too greasy, you may need to use some shampoo to remove any oil residue. I hope this helps!
I enjoy using a pump bottle. Is it liquidy that it would pump up?
HI, good question. I find that coconut oil based products tend to thin out more with heat, so it probably would work in a warm shower setting. Let us know?
Is there something that I can add to this to make it less greasy on my hair?
Hi Ali, I would suggest using it only on bottom 1/4 or less of your hair. You can also try to follow this up with a diluted shampoo wash/rinse with warm water. I know for myself with fine, thin hair I can only use products like this sparingly and only on the ends of my hair.
For those that want it to wash out easily. You could experiment with adding some Turkey red castor oil which is water soluble and emulsifying.
Hey David thanks for that tip!
