Patriotic party food!

Memorial day is just around the corner now and I am already excited about all the yummy food from the barbecues that weekend. The holiday wouldn’t be right without some patriotic party food though, right? And what’s more patriotic than cherries and chocolate? My kids and I just made these red, white, and blue cherries this week for a potluck and they were a HUGE hit. The kids loved making them, they were that easy! I also loved that they were super cheap and fast to make as well!

washed cherries

I grabbed about a pound of cherries at the store. Make sure to wash them really well. I like to use this homemade produce wash and preserver on my fruits. The only hard part here was keeping the kids from devouring the delicious cherries.

melted chocolate

The next step is melting your chocolate. I prefer to use white chocolate chips because in my opinion they melt and coat better than the candy melts. Maybe I use candy melts wrong, because I know a lot of people swear by them, but I just use plain ol’ cheap white chocolate chips. I put about a 1/2 cup in my bowl and start melting them in the microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring often until they are fully melted. Warning: you may want to eat the melted chocolate by the spoonful!

dipped cherry

We tried to coat about 3/4 of cherry with the melted chocolate. Some of them were like that, most were about 1/2. It doesn’t need to be a perfect measurement, just be sure that some of the red of the cherry can be seen. Otherwise they would just be blue and white cherries. Actually, that might not be so bad, means there is more chocolate. Hmmm. Make sure to let the excess chocolate drip off into the bowl.

blue sprinkles for coating

Now you can dip your your chocolate coated cherries into the blue sprinkles. You can roll them around there or just set it in the sprinkles dish and give the dish a quick shake. My kids did it both ways and they both worked great.

Now all you have to do is set them on some wax paper to cool, it takes about 10-15 minutes for the chocolate to harden. The hardest part of this whole recipe was stopping myself from licking the bowl of chocolate clean. Seriously, they were so easy to do, my 5 & 7 year old did most of them. From start to finish, it took us about 35 minutes to do a pound of cherries!
