the best homemade red velvet hot chocolate

Homemade Red Velvet Hot Chocolate

My husband proclaimed that this isĀ the best hot chocolate he hasĀ ever had! It is not just hot chocolate with red food coloring. Indeed, it is much better – rich, velvety, and full of the classic red velvet cocoa flavor.

I am sure I will be making this hot chocolate again soon, with or without theĀ food coloring. (By the way, you can seeĀ how to make those cute miniĀ heart cookies here.)

ingredients for red velvet hot chocolate

One of the key ingredients to make this hot chocolate stand out from the crowd is the cream cheese. Of course, it is better with cream cheese!Ā I should probably add cream cheese to all hot chocolate from now on. šŸ˜‰

The semi-sweet chocolate provides the rich cocoa flavor. You can probably get away with usingĀ nearly any type of milk in this recipe, but I used 2%. Overall, this red velvet hot cocoa uses simple ingredients that you probably already have on hand.

(In case you’re wondering, that green and white thing in the photo is my “salt pig.” I got it a few years ago and I love it. The salt is easily accessible, but still protected. This isĀ the one I have.)

You can blend the room temperature cream cheese and milk together in a blender, or with a hand blender inĀ the saucepan, until smooth.

Feel free to add whipped cream or marshmallows to your hot chocolate, but you don’t even need it! This red velvet hot chocolate is rich and delicious on its own. If you find it is too rich for you, adding more milkĀ may help to adapt it to your taste.
