homemade poppy seed dressing

Creamy Poppy Seed Dressing: perfect for a summer salad!

It is amazing how easy it is to make this homemade poppy seed dressing! You can probably whip it up in less than 15-minutes, and then you’ll have a jar of dressing that will last for months!

So, skip the bottle at the grocery store and try this recipe instead. You’ll love the fresh flavor it brings along with the balance of sweetness and tang. It goes great on so many different salads, and it can even be used on other recipes as well!

Poppy Seed Dressing Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1/3 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Dry Mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon minced dry onion
  • 1 cup EVOO
  • 1 Tablespoon Poppy Seeds

Directions:

  1. In a blender or food processor add together your vinegar, sugar, mustard, salt, and onion and mix together at a medium speed.
  2. Turn food processor or blender to a higher speed and gradually stream in the oil.
  3. Once the oil is mixed in, mix in poppy seeds on low.
  4. Refrigerate (or serve right away if necessary).

Note: You can make the dressing without a blender (I use my Vitamix) or food processor but you will need a good whisk and a strong arm to slowly whisk in the oil. It is important that you continue to mix and slowly add the oil so that it will properly emulsify.

Serving Tips

I think the dressing is best if you give it some time to refrigerate before serving. It can store for several weeks in your fridge. You will just have to shake it up before use.

I highly recommend trying this poppy seed dressing on our 4th of July salad recipe. It goes great with the spinach and strawberry. You could also try it on basically any other salad recipe as well, it’s quite versatile!

Along with salads, you could even try this dressing on something else like chicken if you want. Experiment and enjoy!

  • I am not much of a fan of white vinegar or white sugar. Would a sub of Apple cider vinegar or coconut vinegar work, also with honey or agave?

  • I’ve just made this and put it into the empty Kraft bottle from the store bought version… The recipe filled the bottle almost full. I used white vinegar but will try a milder vinegar next time I think. In the ingredients on the Kraft bottle it says white vinegar and red wine vinegar, so could try a combo of those!
