Chocolate mousse cheesecake recipe

Amazing Chocolate Mousse Cheesecake Dessert

Such a delicious, decadent pie! Perfect as a holiday dessert or special occasion. I tested it out with the Thanksgiving crowd this year and it was very well-received. In fact, it was the only one (of several desserts) that was eaten in its entirety.

At first, I was intimidated by the layers. Not so much by the cheesecake layer, because I have made many of those before. However, I don’t have a lot of experience with mousse or ganache. At the end of it, I thought to myself, “That wasn’t bad at all!” 🙂 Those chocolate layers are actually quicker and easier than I thought they would be. Totally worth it!

Making the Oreo Cookie Crust

I just throw the Oreo cookies into the food processor and pulse them into crumbs. While the processor is running, drizzle the melted butter in through the chute and sprinkle in a pinch of salt. Viola! Easy peasy Oreo cookie crust.

Cheesecake Layer

Oh, delicious cheesecake. My favorite part. My husband’s favorite part, however, is everything else – he loves all of the decadent chocolate.

The chocolate mousse – heavy cream, egg yolks, chocolate chips, and powdered sugar. Simple enough, right? You can do it!

Chocolate Ganache Layer

My first time making ganache and it turned out wonderfully! It wasn’t hard at all either so don’t be worried if it’s your first time too.

This chocolate mousse cheesecake recipe is really awesome. Even though I was a bit nervous to try it before I started, it turned out great! Plus, you can make this pie up to a day in advance, which makes it even more perfect for holidays or special events!

This chocolate mousse cheesecake will be the star of the dessert table and maybe even the whole meal. 😉 If you try it out, let us know how it goes!

Prep Time: 25-30 mins | Cook Time: 50-55 mins
Yield: 1 9-inch Pie | Serves: 12-14

Ingredients

  • Crust

  • 24 Oreos (or other chocolate sandwich cookie), crushed
  • 5 tablespoons butter, melted (if unsalted, add a pinch of salt too)
  • Cheesecake Filling

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • Mousse Layer

  • 1 cup heavy cream, divided
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar (optional)
  • Ganache

  • 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.
  2. For the crust, combine the Oreo cookie crumbs and the melted butter.
  3. Press the mixture into the bottom and up the sides of a deep dish 9-inch pie plate.
  4. Refrigerate while you make the cheesecake filling.
  5. For the filling, with an electric mixer, blend together the softened cream cheese and granulated sugar until smooth.
  6. Add the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla and mix until combined.
  7. Blend in the sour cream.
  8. Spread the filling over the cookie crust and bake for 40-45 minutes, until the edges are set and the center is slightly firm (you don't want it to be really jiggly).
  9. Remove from the oven and let it cool completely on a wire rack.
  10. For the mousse, heat 1/2 cup cream in a small saucepan until just simmering.
  11. Place the egg yolks in a small bowl.
  12. Whisking vigorously, pour a couple tablespoons of the hot cream into the egg yolks and continue whisking until completely combined.
  13. Pour the tempered egg yolks into the saucepan with the remaining hot cream, whisking quickly the whole time, and return the saucepan to medium-low heat, cooking while stirring constantly, until the cream/egg mixture bubbles and thickens, 1-2 minutes.
  14. Remove from the heat and stir in the chocolate chips, whisking until the mixture is smooth and the chocolate is completely melted.
  15. For additional sweetness, whisk in up to 1/4 cup powdered sugar.
  16. Let the mixture cool to room temperature, whisking occasionally to avoid a skin forming across the top.
  17. When completely cool, beat the remaining 1/2 cup cream to stiff peaks and gently fold into the completely cooled chocolate mixture.
  18. Spread the mousse over the top of the cooled cheesecake pie and refrigerate.
  19. While the pie chills, make the ganache by combining the butter and heavy cream in a saucepan over medium heat until the butter is melted and the mixture is simmering.
  20. Place the chocolate in a small bowl.
  21. Pour the hot cream mixture over the chocolate and stir until glossy and smooth.
  22. Stir in the vanilla and powdered sugar.
  23. Spread the ganache over the mousse and refrigerate the pie for at least an hour and up to a day.
