One of Our Own

If you have been following us for any length of time, you know we love to “Pay It Forward” every chance we get. We have been so blessed by couponing, we want to in turn bless others (plus it makes us feel so darn good!).

We always rope you guys into helping out with our little “giving back” plans and without hesitation you always deliver in a BIG way.  Well, we have another one for you and this one hits so close to home. Too close. I’m talking about one of our own.

(as of October 2009 – the picture is now out of date!)

Many of you may know that over a year ago Cathy/”s husband lost his job. And you might also know that she has 7 young mouths to feed. What you probably don’t know is how dire their situation is. It is bad. Very bad.

Before her husband lost his job, they had done everything right. They had pinched pennies when there was no need. They had built a stockpile. They had money in savings. So when the security of her husband’s income was ripped from under them, they were okay. He set out to find a new job and picked up any available odd jobs he could to bring in income. Money was tight, but they were staying afloat. Then weeks turned into months and months turned into a year. No job offers. No more savings. No more stockpile.

We begged her to let us help her. She refused and set about organizing fundraisers and charity events for others. We pleaded with her to accept money from us. She again refused and then we watched her as she willingly gave up her high value baby coupons to help out those in need as we were shopping for the Community Baby Shower.

“It will come back to me,” she said confidently. And now we ask your help to make that happen.

There has never been a more deserving person. Cathy gives freely. She serves without hesitation. She always puts others before herself. But she no longer has that ability. She needs our help and has FINALLY (albeit kicking and screaming) agreed to allow it.

So here is the plan…..

Linder Farms in Meridian, Idaho is allowing us to sell corn maze tickets to help our friend!

I can imagine how hard it must be….believe me I got tears in my eyes when I was reading your post as I know how its feel to be jobless. I finished my masters in 2008 and havent been to work since. Its just so hard to hang in there but I put my trust in the Almighty, that he has something good in store for me . When I moved to WA, I got a part time assistant job which is a ray in this darkness. I see so many beautiful people suffering that I start loosing trust in Life and moreover in myself but then i have to kick myself to get going. But I can’t ignore the fact that when I moved to WA I came to know about your blog and its has helped me save. I cant thank you Fab gals and other Coupon Divas enough for all your time, effort and hard work. Thank you so much. Cathy I will keep you and your lovely family in my prayers and rest of the Fab gals applaud to you for standing by your friend in this difficult times. At this time, its so so hard to find true friends and you all are indeed truly blessed in that case.

    Love…
    God bless

Even though I live in Washington State I still “bought” 5 tickets. I simply requested that they do not mail them to me as I won’t use them. I started couponing this year and I cannot even begin to tell you the amount of money we have saved. I never knew it was possible to basically get every toiletry product my family uses for FREE let alone all the FREE food I bring home each week.

Sites like this one are awesome! I would think with all the money Fabulessly Frugal helps us save we can all afford to help a little 🙂

Hang in there Cathy… Life Is Good!

  • Bill

I love this family. Always have, always will.

  • Judy

For those of us that live out of area, would you prefer we buy tickets and maybe you can donate them to someone or is there another way we can donate?

    • monica

Perfect Judy! You can buy ticket and donate them back. We will find good homes for them. Just leave a note on the paypal transaction of what you would like us to do with the tickets!

  • Jackie

From what I know of Cathy, I can’t think of anyone more deserving. She has done so much to help others and it’s definitely time she has her turn! $5.50 is a drop in the bucket compared to what she has helped me save on my grocery bill. Thank you Cathy! We’ll be praying for your family.

  • A Deal Diva

What a very deserving lady. I know she has helped me save money too. I will also post this on my blog.

While I don’t have 7 kids to feed and clothe, I am able to understand Cathy’s desire to help others and not ask for help for herself. We’ve struggled with unemployment since early spring in 2009, when our son was 9 months old. It’s been a horrible experience in so many ways, but a positive one as well. I can’t say that I want to ever experience this again (who wants to experience losing their home and being fearful of homelessness?), but I’m thankful for the way it’s made me realize how important my husband is to me. Our savings didn’t last long, but it lasted longer because we were able to coupon and we learned to be more frugal than we ever imagined.

I thank your website for offering such great guidance. I will be passing on your link to other locals that might be interested in giving back and going to the maze. 🙂

  • Sophie

You guys are such amazing friends. She is lucky to have you and vice versa!

  • Sarah

So glad Cathy allowed us to help! Sometimes–no, ALL of the time– it’s so much harder to accept help than give it. Been there, believe me. But this truly is a time for her family to be rewarded for all the good she has done. Much love!

  • Amy Conner

I think you are AMAZING Cathy!! Thanks for all you do! I hope we are all able to come together and help you and your beautiful family because you sure have helped my family more than you will ever know!

P.S. I just bought four tickets…don’t waste your money mailing them I live like a minute away from you now so I will gladly come pick them up!

Thanks ladies for all you do!!

  • Gwen

Linder Farms is the ultimate fall experience! Good luck to Cathy and her family. I hope this helps!

  • Nicole

We bought 3, hope it helps 🙂 As I was reading the story (3 different times), I got so emotional…Cathy, you and your family will be in our prayers! Thanks Fabulessly Frugal for all that you do!

  • Meghan

I want to help, but don’t live anywhere near you…. I love you FruGALS! I started couponing because of you! (Google suggested you 2 years ago. I had never heard of couponing like this and shopped all wrong! You inspired me to learn and now I blog for my area and get to teach people how to do!) Tell me what I can do!

  • Mel

Great deal on the Maze tickets! Thanks!

Now… what else can we do?

  • Bridget

Love you all so much! Cathy, we are so grateful for the time and efforts you put into to helping our families save so much! I am so glad that you have decided (or let the other ladies decide for you) to let us give back to you. I have purchased mine for a fun night out and linked to this post on FB so that all my friends in the area can party with me!

Like so many others….I want to know, what else can we do to help?

  • Devon

I just purchased two tickets- please donate them to a local family who would like some fall fun. Best of luck!

  • katie

I would like to help in other ways too, please let me know if I can donate some of my stockpile of food and toiletries. I will be buying four tickets for my family as well. Thanks- Robin

  • Sherrie

We are so glad to help out. Cathy, you have amazing friends. Also, my husband wanted to let you know we are hiring evenings for tractor drivers.

  • Kathi

Awesome friends indeed! Of course I will buy some tickets, but what else can I do? I would be happy to put together a care package, and I also have lots of baby coupons. I really enjoyed meeting and working with all of you during the yard sale.

  • Stylin' Binder's

Cathy is a very creative women! She was my son’s preschool teacher and also did a great job at that. I wish she still taught!! Thanks for all your help Cathy we love al your hard work you have done alot these past few years!!

  • Neva

    Dear Cathy,

While it is more blessed to give than to receive, please know that no one thinks less of you for being on the receiving end. It is obvious that you are a very hard-working mom who loves her family and wants what is best for everyone. Please know that there isn’t one person who hasn’t been “rescued” by someone or something in their lifetime. Give your friends the chance to rescue you. *hugs*

  • Tamara

    Hello,

I’ve been to your blog a few times, but I started over on Thrifty and Thriving as my first blog. I saw the post there and followed it over here. I will admit, it hit me hard today as it’s been a hard day, so the tears could have been for many reasons 🙂

All that aside, while jobless myself, I have been lucky and the coupons from the blogs have saved much over the last few months and even given me free things to give others. So the least I could do was spend 5.50 of that saved money to help someone who really should get help, more so since they didn’t ask for it.

I hope my little note here and the ticket is helpful, I asked for it to be given to someone who could use it as I live in TN and will not be in the area. The only thing I asked, was I’d love to see pictures of people going to the maze, be it whoever gets my ticket or just in general.

I love to see people having fun, it always brightens my day. And if I might be so bold to suggest something I’m sure others have thought of? Make sure that Cathy and her family get some of the tickets from those of us who can’t use them 🙂

    Sorry to spam everyone 🙂

I think this is a great thing you are doing and I would love to be able to help out but I am in pretty much the same situation. The company I worked for went out of business in 8/08 and my boyfriend has been laid off since 3/08. Neither of us can find jobs (not for lack of trying), we have NO savings, and no more unemployment. While we don’t have multiple children, I have a son who is in college at BSU and has health issues.(No insurance, meds are $600+/mo, IF I could afford to fill them) we have no idea what’s going to happen next month or even next week. I had a decent stockpile but that has long been depleted so now we just make do with whatever we have or what little we can afford. I don’t even look at an Albertson’s ad because it’s so depressing to know that even with all my coupons, I still can’t do the Catalina deals or even some of the other great sales they have had lately. I would love to be able to help, but I can’t. I don’t want people to feel sorry for us, I’m just writing this to let you know that I am thinking about you and hopefully things will get better soon for all of us.

    • Neva

If your son is in college at BSU, he can get medical coverage through the school. In fact, if he’s full time he’s required to buy their insurance. A friend of mine told me that their student health services is pretty good … maybe this can help your son.

  • MaryBeth

I’m so glad to have been able to help. Normally it is very hard for my husband and I to make room in our under-employed budget, but since we were already working and saving hard to be able to go to a corn maze this year, these tickets were also a great help to me!! I *LOVE* when things work out like that. Many prayers to Cathy and her family…

  • Tonya

Is there anything else we can do to help?

  • Sonya

Just purchased 4 tickets – please donate them to a family that would not be able to attend otherwise!! If there’s anything else I can do to help, I’d love to do so!! What a beautiful family! :0)

  • crystal Leonard

I am going to buy a ticket, I wish I could do more, but unfortunetly I am very strapped as well, going through a divorce, no job, no lunch money for my daughter, no gas and my friends have been there for me so I want to pay it forward and help where I can.

    God bless everyone,

    Crystal

  • Cind

Bless their hearts… While we all struggle, it’s most helpful to look past our own problems, trials, and issues to see the struggle of others. Clearly that is what this amazing woman has done. May she be blessed beyond everyones hopes and expectations.

I donated 4 and posted on my blog at http://cindyseesit.blogspot.com

  • sunvalleymom

I can’t afford to buy tickets myself right now (I am blessed to have a good job, but just started life as a single mom with 4 kids in September, so I am on a very, very tight budget right now), but I did post the link and information about tickets on my company’s intranet bulletin board, and it usually gets really good results. So I am hoping I can sell a lot of tickets for you! We have an office in Meridian, so I know people there could use the tickets. Good luck!

  • Ali Smith

Wow. I have been so darn busy the last two weeks that I haven’t even been able to hop on the site (or even do any coupon shopping for that matter) and I can’t believe what I miss! Cathy…I am proud of you for allowing others to help you. As many above have said, there is NOTHING shameful in doing so. We ALL have to accept help sometimes and that only means that we will be even more inclined to help OTHERS when we are given the opportunity. You gals “pay it forward” all of the time and it’s YOUR turn. I just really hope that you don’t feel embarrassed or anything. You shouldn’t. I am in the same boat at the moment (hubby unemployed and basically NO income) and I am gratefully accepting all the help that I can get, because I know that once we are back on my feet and in a position to help others we WILL. Any way, you have some amazing friends and I’m glad that they talked you into doing this. I wish I was in the position to help out right now…but it looks like you gals are getting all kinds of support without me. 🙂 I wish you the best Cathy and you deserve this. Plain and simple. 🙂

  • MK

When will we be getting the tickets we purchased?

  • TiAnn

I’d like to buy a few tickets, but I’ll need them right away, are you located in Boise & is there away that I could pick them up? Or do they have to be shipped?

Thanks & what a great cause!
