Winter is coming and we’ve got you covered from head to foot with these DIY winter clothes and accessory ideas! You’ll be amazed at how stylish these homemade garments are, and you’ll love how warm they’ll keep you while you brave the winter air.
Best of all, since these are all DIY ideas, you can customize them to fit your style perfectly. Or, you could even make some of these to give away as homemade Christmas gifts!
1. DIY Slipper Boots
Slipper boots are a must-have in the winter, but the store-bought ones can get pretty pricey. Luckily, you can make these SUPER cute DIY slippers with just an old sweater!
If you DON’T already have a sweater you’re willing to part with, drop by your local thrift shop and see what they have on sale. You might be able to find a cool color or material for your pair of slipper boots, and for cheap.

2. Fingerless Gloves from Socks
What can you make from an old or unused pair of socks? Fingerless Gloves! To make the best gloves, choose thick socks that are perfect for the cold season. No more frosty cold mornings with fingerless gloves!

- heart patches (optional)
3. Faux Fur: Trapper Hat
While this faux fur hat is a bit harder to make than the previous DIY winter clothes featured, it’s still not too difficult! Just requires some sewing skills which I’m sure you have 🙂 It’s totally worth the effort too, I mean just look how fabulous and warm the hat looks!
If you want to make one for your child, that’s totally possible too. Just use the printable pieces (found in the tutorial below) and shrink them down a bit.

4. Easy Legwarmers
Leg warmers may have been popular in the 1980s, but who says we can’t bring them back in style? With these more modernized DIY leg warmers, you’ll be keeping warm while being a trendsetter at the same time! Plus, these are just perfect to wear while you’re lounging around at home.
Items Needed:
- 1/2 yard sweatshirt fleece
- sweater knit or
- other knit material
- 1/4 yard ribbed knit
5. Sweater Pants
Have you ever looked at a sweater and thought, “I could make pants with those.”? Well, someone did, and they made a tutorial for it. And honestly, these sweater pants look really good! They sort of remind me of a pair of longjohns, but a lot more colorful and stylish.
Items Needed:
- Sweater
- Needle
- Thread
- Scissors
- Safety pins
- Shorts for sizing
6. Mittens From a Sweater
Here’s another project that makes use of an old sweater, but this time for mittens! These DIY winter accessories do require some sewing skills, but wow they look amazing.
Items Needed:
- Felted sweater mitten pattern
- 100% wool sweater
- T-shirt
- Sewing machine (optional)
- Pins
- 1-2 yard of wool yarn and a large darning needle
7. DIY Circle Cape
If you’re looking for an extremely fashionable accessory that goes with almost any outfit AND provides a ton of warmth, look no further. This DIY circle cape is perfect.
Items Needed:
- About 4 yards of thick fabric
- Box cutter or scissors
- Fabric glue
- Needle
- Thread
- Button
- Sewing machine (optional)
8. DIY Winter Headband for Babies
We’ve written our own post on how to make baby headbands, and we even created a list of DIY baby headbands, but this DIY winter headband was too cute not to include. This is a great accessory for warming up your baby’s ears, and you could probably even make a matching full-size version for yourself if you want!
Items Needed:
- 1/8 yard printed stretchy fabric (knit, fleece, etc.)
- 1/8 yard faux fur (or soft sherpa wool-type fabric)
- Scissors
- Thread
- Pins
- Sewing machine
9. No-Sew Winter Cape
This no-sew winter cape offers a different style versus the circle cape listed above, and it also doesn’t require a stitch of sewing! Very elegant and easy to make.
Items Needed:
- Warm no-pill fleece cut to 42″ by 65″
- Pair of fabric scissors
10. DIY Blanket Scarf
And finally, a list of DIY winter accessories wouldn’t be quite complete without a scarf! Blanket scarves are very trendy recently and they look great so you can’t really go wrong here. Plus, you can make them work with almost any outfit so that’s a huge bonus!
Items Needed:
- 2-2.5 yards of Flannel fabric
- Sewing scissors
Final Thoughts
It’s important that you dress functionally for the cold weather, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be stylish too! It also doesn’t mean you have to buy super expensive winter clothes! With these DIY winter clothes, you’re getting affordability, functionality, and fashion, all in one.
