And, while that definitely works, this homemade and fresh sweet potato fry recipe is one that is packed with delicious flavors that you will never want to make sweet potatoes from frozen again!
How Do You Make Sweet Potato Fries
These sweet potato fries are simple and delicious. I love the spice mix for this one. Feel free to mix it up and try your own spices. For this recipe, you will need:
- 1-2 small sweet potatoes
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons avocado oil
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1-1.5 teaspoons paprika
- ¼-½ teaspoon oregano
- Chili powder, to taste
Important Tips for Making Sweet Potato Fries in the Air Fryer
To get soft and crunchy fries, I like to cut the sweet potatoes in ¼-½ inch slices. Then, place the potato slices in a bowl of cold water for at least 5 minutes.
Another thing to remember is to make sure that the fries are completely dry before cooking them in the air fryer. I like to take a paper towel and pat each fry dry.
Season the Fries
As mentioned, you can use your own favorite seasoning mix, or the one for this recipe. I love this one because it is so flavorful. Feel free to experiment with the proportions until it is perfect for you and your tastes.
Once the fries are completely dry, place them in a bowl. Add in the avocado oil and the seasonings. Stir everything together until the fries are completely coated.
Cooking Fries in the Air Fryer
Once the fries are ready to be cooked, place them in a single layer in the air fryer basket. This will help them cook evenly so that you get that nice tasty crunch. Cook at 370F for 12 minutes, shaking at the halfway point.
Important Cooking Note: How to Know if Air Fryer Fries are Done Cooking
Because every air fryer make and model is different, your cooking time and temperature may vary from mine. Just keep an eye on your fries, and test them with a fork. When they are tender and cooked through, they are done. If not, keep adding time until they are cooked and tender to your liking.
Next, add a little oil, bump up the temp, and cook for an additional couple of minutes and until the fries are crispy to your liking. Follow these steps and your sweet potato fries will be perfect!

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries
Equipment
Ingredients
- 1-2 small sweet potatoes
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2-3 teaspoons avocado oil
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1-1.5 teaspoons paprika
- 1/4-1/2 teaspoon oregano
- chili powder to taste
Instructions
- Peel the potatoes and cut them into ¼-½ inch thick slices. Place them in a bowl of cold water and let it soak for about 5 minutes.
- Preheat the air fryer for 5 minutes at 400°F/200°C.
- Drain the potatoes from the water and pat them completely dry. Dry out the bowl. Make sure the fries are completely dry. Place the fries back in the bowl, add the salt.
- Add the oil to the fries with the seasonings. (You can add more or less of the seasoning, it is completely to your taste. I recommend having more of the garlic, onion, and paprika over the oregano and chili powder. But feel free to experiment with your own favorite seasonings).
- Stir to combine the seasonings with the oil and potatoes.
- Place the fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Cook at 370°F/185°C for 12 minutes, shaking at the halfway point.
- After 12 minutes, test the tenderness of your fries with a fork. If they need more time, cook for an additional minute or two at 370°F/185°C. If they are tender to your liking, bump up the heat to 400°F/200°C and cook for 2-3 minutes or until they reach desired crispiness.
- Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce! (I made a combination of mayonnaise and BBQ sauce).
