Making the Old Look New {Frugal Craft Idea}

Since this blog has taken over my life and become my passion/hobby, I no longer craft.  Thankfully, I know some pretty awesome people who DO!  I’m excited to have Marji, guest blog for me today and share a great idea she saw and then put into action… take it away Marji!

Hi! I’m Marji, wife, mom to 4 (crazy) kids and lover of crafts. I am always looking for fun (inexpensive) crafts to make and give as gifts or brighten up my home. I saw this idea on Pinterest and have been dying to try it so I thought it would be fun to share how I did it.

Knife Blocks {From Ugly to Cuteness} Pin this!

I took my ugly old knife blocks and spray painted them (my dad likes to buy me knives so that is why have 2 blocks). First clean them to get the dust and grime off and then I sanded them a little bit. I took them to my spray paint station (an upside down box in my garage).

I applied about 4 coats, letting it dry between each coat.
Don’t leave your 2 year old in the garage while you go in to get something because this is what happens:

It is really humid in Arkansas so I let them dry overnight before I finished them.

They looked good, but I decided I wanted a little different look so I took some sand paper and sanded them a bit, focusing on the edges. You could also use steel wool.

Next I wiped the dust off and applied some antiquing medium. You paint it on with a sponge brush then wipe it off with a damp paper towel. If you don’t have that you can use a watered down brown paint.

Let that dry then apply a vinyl letter. I have a silhouette so I can cut my own vinyl. You can buy vinyl letters at craft stores. You can also print a big letter out and cut it out and trace it on the block, then paint it.

After putting your letter on give it a final spray of clear sealer. Since it is in your kitchen you want to be able to wipe it down.

Put your knives back in and enjoy a fun, cheap new accessory in your kitchen!

I love the little splash of color it gives to my kitchen. It was a cheap project because I already had everything on hand so I didn’t have to go buy anything to complete it.  Hope you enjoy!

What do you have in your house that you can paint or change to make you like it again?
