Creamy, Rich Homemade Nutella Hot Chocolate
Nutella Hot Chocolate

Creamy, Rich Nutella Hot Chocolate (No Mix Required)
If you love a truly rich and creamy Nutella hot chocolate, this recipe is about to become your new cold-weather favorite. It’s made with real chocolate, sweetened condensed milk, and Nutella for that smooth chocolate-hazelnut flavor you just can’t get from a standard cocoa packet.
Unlike powdered mixes, this homemade version melts everything together for a luxuriously thick texture. It’s quick to make on the stovetop and easy to adapt for a slow cooker if you’re serving a crowd.

- Deep chocolate flavor with creamy hazelnut notes from Nutella.
- Ultra-smooth texture thanks to sweetened condensed milk.
- No cocoa powder needed — this is real melted chocolate.

Ingredients You’ll Need

This recipe uses simple ingredients, but the combination tastes decadent:
- Chocolate chips (semi-sweet works best)
- Nutella
- Sweetened condensed milk

- Water
You won’t get this kind of flavor from a powdered mix — even a gourmet one like
hot cocoa mix.
Nutella adds that signature chocolate-hazelnut richness that makes this drink feel extra special.

Stovetop Instructions
- Add chocolate chips, Nutella, and sweetened condensed milk to a large pot.
- Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until fully melted and smooth.

A Quick Word of Warning
This Nutella hot chocolate is rich and indulgent. You may want it every night — but it’s best saved for special occasions like Christmas Eve, winter weekends, or after playing outside in the cold.
It’s especially fun to serve after watching The Polar Express or during a holiday craft night.
Slow Cooker Instructions
This recipe works beautifully in a slow cooker if you’re serving a crowd:
- Add all ingredients to a slow cooker.
- Cook on LOW for 2–3 hours, whisking every 30–45 minutes.
- Switch to WARM for serving.

Tips, Toppings & Serving Ideas

- Whisk often for the smoothest texture.
- Top it off with mini marshmallows or whipped cream.
- Make it fancy: microwave 1 tablespoon Nutella + 1 tablespoon chocolate syrup and drizzle on top.
Serve alongside homemade cinnamon rolls or
easy caramel popcorn.

How to Make It More Frugal
- Buy Nutella when it’s on sale and store it in the pantry.
- Use store-brand evaporated and condensed milk.
- Serve smaller mugs with toppings to stretch the batch.
Storage & Reheating
Refrigerate: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Reheat: Warm gently on the stovetop or microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring between each.

How many cups will this recipe make?
about 10ish!
This sounds heavenly, but how is this frugal? Just curious because sweetened milk, chocolate chips, and nutella can all add up..those are definitely luxury items for me…
Shannon,
I agree that these are luxury items but coupons do come out for all of them. I stocked up on these items with coupons, sales and doublers. That makes enjoying luxuries with a little less guilt.
I had everything in my stockpile that I purchased using coupons. The only exception was the marshmallows, but I got them on sale for $.88/bag! That’s the great thing about having a stockpile. I can splurge on the “luxury” items at a fraction of the cost!
This sounds amazing! I love, love, love all these ingredients. I am going to try it with coffee instead of water to give it a mocha touch.
Wong on so many levels – can’t wait to try it!!!
Yummy!!! Made this tonight & sat by the warm fire. This will definitely be a regular treat in the winter!
