Chocolate Peanut Butter Hearts Recipe
Homemade Reese’s Peanut Butter Hearts
If you or someone you know is a fan of Reese’s, you will want to save this recipe and try it out as soon as possible! I actually think these treats are better than the store-bought candy. Such a cute treat to give to your Valentine too!
Of course, you don’t have to make them in the shape of a heart, if you don’t want to. In fact, I used the extra chocolate and peanut butter mixture to make homemade Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups in the bottom of a few muffin liners. (I used this 12-cavity mini heart silicone mold for the hearts.)
First, you’ll want to let the butter sit at room temperature for a bit. Then gather the 5 ingredients and grab your mold. I used an electric hand mixer to combine the peanut butter mixture. Start out slowly so you don’t end up with powdered sugar everywhere! It starts out pretty lumpy, but once you get the butter mixed in there it becomes more of a thick, paste-like, delicious, mixture.
I’ve made these several times and I’ve found that sometimes my peanut butter mixture is thicker than other times. I like it thicker because it is easier to get a good amount into the heart. I think it has something to do with the softness of the butter and also accurate measuring of the powdered sugar. Either way it will still taste awesome! Just let the butter sit out on the counter for a bit. You don’t want it to be too soft though, so don’t microwave it.
I just melt the chocolate chips in the microwave. By the way, I highly recommend Guittard milk chocolate chips. So good! They usually go on sale for about $2 a bag in the fall. (The Guittard Choc-Au-Lait are the best white chocolate chips too, by far.)
I’ve also tried melting the chocolate chips in a resealable plastic bag in the microwave, then just cutting off a corner and piping the chocolate into the hearts. That works fine, but you’ll want to spread it out more evenly into the mold with a spoon to get rid of air bubbles.
These amounts worked out nearly perfectly for my mold. Enjoy!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Hearts Recipe
- ½ cup natural creamy peanut butter
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter room temperature
- ¾ cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 cups Guittard milk chocolate chips
- In a medium bowl, mix the peanut butter, butter, brown sugar, and powdered sugar together.
- Melt the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl for 2 minutes on 50% power (power level 5). Stir until bowl no longer feels warm, then microwave for 30 seconds more. Stir until smooth.
- Place enough melted chocolate into the heart mold to cover the bottom of each heart. Gently place about 1-2 teaspoons of the peanut butter mixture into each heart. (It helps if you can shape it into a rough disc before placing it into the mold.) Cover with more of the melted chocolate. Place the hearts into the refrigerator or freezer until hardened.
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
- If you have extra peanut butter filling and chocolate, you can layer the chocolate and peanut butter into the bottom of a muffin liner to make your own homemade peanut butter cups! Or make peanut butter balls. Yum!

Would the candy melts work instead of the chocolate chips?
Yes, I think those would work well. It might not taste quite as good as the chocolate chips though. 😉
Do I need to use a microwave, or can I meet the chocolate on the stove?
You can definitely melt the chocolate on the stove top, just be careful not to overcook. A double boiler method would help with that.
Can I use chunky peanut butter instead of creamy? I love the crunch of the nuts 🙂
