DIY Glass Stove Top Cleaner (3 Ingredients)

Glass stove top with hard water stains and grime

I love my glass top stove. What I don’t like is the fact that EVERYTHING leaves a stain!

Burns come out fairly easily if you get them quickly. But, what doesn’t come out easily are hard water stains left from water that somehow seeps out during cooking. I’ve had the same stubborn stains on my glass top for over a year!

It has been cleaned again and again with every chemical spray and magic eraser available. NOTHING has worked…until now! The best part is, I did it at home with NO cleaning chemicals at all!

Introducing the Best DIY Glass Stovetop Cleaner Ever!

I used this DIY glass stove top cleaner and, while it seems a bit strange at first (just wait until you see the ingredients), it’s the best stain remover ever! I was so surprised and excited about how well it worked.

Here’s a before and after shot:

Before and after using homemade glass stove top cleaner

How to Make the Glass Stove Top Cleaner

As you can see from the before and after shots above, this homemade stain remover really works! It’s pretty crazy to see how drastic a difference there is between what we started with and what the end result is.

Best of all, it’s super easy to make this cleaner because you don’t actually have to make anything at all! All you need are 4 simple supplies and you’re good to go:

I told you the ingredients were a bit weird! Stick with me though because they work like magic. Just wait and see…

How to Clean Your Glass Stove Top

Ready to put your homemade stove top cleaner into action? Soon you’ll be saying goodbye to those stubborn stains on your glass cooktop for good!

Rubbing potato slice on glass stove top

Step 1. Start with Your Spud:

The first thing you’re going to do is cut a slice off of your potato. Once you have a slice, rub it in small circles over the stains. Don’t be afraid to put some elbow grease into it!

Keep cutting slices off so that you’re not rubbing a dry potato over your stove top.

How this works: The idea here is that the potato acts as a sort of sponge, pulling out some of the stains from the flat stovetop and exposing the tougher stains underneath, which we’ll deal with next.

Pouring vinegar onto flat stovetop stains

Step 2. Vinegar Time:

Once you’ve rubbed your sliced potato over your stains, grab your vinegar and pour it directly onto the surface of the stove. Let it sit for 5 minutes before you wipe it up.

When you’re wiping it up, do not add water to your wipe. Leave any vinegar residue leftover in place.

How this works: The acidic properties of the vinegar should help break down and dissolve those tough stains.

Coca-cola glass stovetop stain remover

Step 3. Finish with Coca-Cola:

Last but not least, open a can of Coca-Cola and pour it over the area you’ve been working on and let it sit for 15 minutes.

I will say, it felt strange pouring sugary soda on something I wanted to clean! But it was so neat hearing it pop and fizzle just like Pop Rocks candy for the first few minutes after I poured the Coke can on there.

How this works: Similarly to vinegar, Coke has a lot of acidic properties, and various other chemicals as well. These all help eat away at those tough hard water stains and grime!

Liquid on glass cooktop

Step 4. Wipe it All Up

Once your 15 minutes are up, wipe up the soda! Any remaining stains should wipe away with it.

PS: I used a mini can of coke (7.5oz) and it was the perfect amount to cover my cooktop.

Enjoy Your Crystal Clean Glass Stove Top

That’s all there is to it! I couldn’t believe I’ve been living with a disgusting glass stove top for a year when this homemade glass stove top cleaner was so easy and effective! My stovetop hasn’t been this shiny in a while!

I even cleaned up a few other things in the kitchen while I was letting the liquids soak the cooktop. I’d call that a big win! I did have to promptly take out the trash though because it had a strong vinegar smell from the paper towels

If for some reason your top doesn’t come clean right away, simply repeat the process! Even with mine being as bad as it was, I only had to do this once!

I hope this post makes your life a little easier and your stove a little nicer to look at! Please remember to like, share, tweet, and Pin this post! Follow us on Pinterest as well for more ideas like this!

  • How did you ever think to even try this??? Anyhow, thanks!!

  • I can’t wait to try this – thank you!

  • Could you let us know what the purpose of the potato might be? I understand the vinegar and Coke, just not sure what the potato adds specifically.

    • Hi Kim! I read somewhere that the potato has some sort of starch or chemical that “eats away” at mineral stains on drinking glasses. I figured if it worked on glasses then it should work on the glass stove top! I was desperate! I seriously wasn’t sure it was going to work. I was just as surprised at the results! This “recipe” was created out of pure “I can’t stand looking at it anymore” motivation! Sorry I can’t answer exactly why it works. :/

  • I am willing to try your stove looks like mine………………hate it
i thought having this type of stove top would be easier to clean……………………NOT. I hope this works on mine 🙂

  • … or you can sign up for My Lowes and use your $10 coupon on their glass top stove cleaner. Or after you do a Krogers onyo deal like the recent betty crocker deal, use the $5 onyno on the $5 Weyman’s glass top cleaner.

  • kim! i cant wait to try this, but do you think diet coke will work too? just curious! i typically drink coke zero. i wonder if it has the same properties? thanks!

  • This is a great idea. I however use BARKEEPER, a lil goes a long way, and it’s so cheap and has multiple uses, it cleans pots like magic, and my stove top has looked brand new from day one, it’s 4 years old now. All you do is sprinkle a lil then get a DAMP rag, not wet, to form a paste and rub off all stains, burnt on food etc, with lil elbow grease. This product will NOT scratch your stove top. It also clean stainless, and much more.

  • Would Pepsi work in place of Coke?!

    • I just looked up Pepsi’s ingredient list. It shows the same type of acid. Try it! All you have to lose is a can of soda! 🙂 Let us know if it works!

  • Mixing baking soda with water, also helps

  • I do something similar, sprinkle baking soda and then pour 1/4 cup vinegar. With a dry non scratch scrub pad i move the vinegar around and let it sit 10 min before scrubbing. If there’s stubborn spots let it sit a few min longer, otherwise you can wipe it up right away. It leaves streaks so i windex it after. I knew coke worked for decrudding car batteries and this is something ill give a shot!

  • also soft scrub will work the same as the glass top cleaner. and so will the comet soft cleaner scratch free. but i’m all for using homemade household items can’t wait to try this one!

  • I have a shiny slick-like laminate I guess you’d call it bedroom set, lacquer may be the better description does ANY1 know how to clean without harming the finish? A penny stain has marred the look it just seems to stain – what can I use? Can’t scratch it in any way.

    • I would use some water with vinegar… (3 parts water, 1 part vinegar)… test it on the back, but that, and a super soft cloth should get it clean.

  • Giving this a try. On the last step Coke. I will let you know how it works. My hubby was laughing his butt off.

  • My routine
Spray bottle with vinegar and a few drops of dawn.
    Spray and let sit.
    Sprinkle with baking soda.
    scrub with non abrasive pad.
use long razor blade scraper all over.
    wipe clean
    Perfect.
