5 DIY Carpet Cleaner Recipes

Carpets are really hard to clean and maintain without the right tools. Unfortunately, a lot of the store-bought carpet cleaners either don’t work that well, or they contain harmful toxic ingredients.

In order to help you maintain your beautiful, clean carpets, we’re going to show you 5 different homemade carpet cleaning solutions that rock! Most of these recipes are easy to make and they work way better than the store-bought stuff.

1.  Homemade Carpet Shampoo Recipe

This homemade carpet shampoo recipe is great for stains and smells. The recipe is really easy to make with only 3 ingredients!

You will need:

  • 4 tablespoons hydrogen peroxide 3% solution (This is the strength you’ll get in the first aid section.)
  • 1 tablespoon dish detergent
  • 5 drops essential oil (if desired)


2.  DIY Stain Remover

This DIY stain remover is great for all types of stains, including carpet stains. Before you use it though, make sure to test it on a small part of your carpet as the hydrogen peroxide could bleach it.

You will need:

  • One part Dawn dish-washing liquid soap (approx 1 tablespoon)
  • Two parts hydrogen peroxide (approx 2 tablespoons)
  • One part baking soda (approx 1 tablespoon)


3.  Homemade Carpet Deodorizer

This homemade carpet deodorizer helps to naturally get rid of funky smells in your carpet. Best of all, it’s non-toxic and safe for pets and children, unlike the store-bought chemical cleaners.

You will need:

  • 4 TBSP Baking Soda
  • Essential Oils in your choice of scent.


4.  Homemade Carpet Cleaning Solution with Fabric Softener

The creator of this homemade carpet cleaner uses it in her Bissell machine and loves it! It’s super cheap to make, and the fabric softener leaves your carpet nice and soft as well.

You will need:

  • 2 Tablespoons Liquid Tide Laundry Detergent
  • 1/4 cup Awesome cleaner (dollar store brand)
  • 1 scoop Oxyclean (I used generic dollar store brand)
  • 1 teaspoon Downy Fabric Softener (optional)
  • Hot Water, one gallon


5.  Homemade Gum Residue Removal

Gum is one of the toughest things to get out of a carpet. The first bit is easy to get out, but the bit of residue that remains is nearly impossible to remove! Luckily, this recipe makes it a whole lot easier.

You will need:

  • Choose one:
    • Peanut Butter
    • WD-40
    • Oil soap (such as those used for cleaning wood)
    • Muscle Pain Reliever (ex: BenGay)
  • Soft cloths
  • Soap
  • Water
