How to Get the Stink Out of Almost Anything!
Ok. Let me start by saying “almost anything” refers to couches, beds, vinyl, upholstery, and in my case…the car. Now, have you ever gotten into someone’s car and smelled something a little funky? Most of the time, the driver of said car is completely oblivious to it. That’s not me.
I take my dogs everywhere with me. So much so, that I spend a lot of time straining my eyes to see out of the nose art they leave all over my windows. I love them so much that I just don’t notice it until my vocal “better half” tells me how disgusting it is. I know, I know, it is…but they’re my kids! Anyway, what I AM fully aware of, is that they tend to leave this Frito chip smell in my car. I’ve tried all sorts of car fragrances but nothing actually gets it out. My mind has even pondered replicating the scene in the movie “Seven”, you know, hanging tons of those little green pine trees all over the roof? Anyway, I found a solution!!
Even if your particular “stink” is from a kid, your man, your pets, or something spilled (bodily fluid or not), this solution will work for you!
- Vinegar
- Hot Water
- Dish Detergent (I used Dr. Bronner)
- Baking Soda (I used Arm& Hammer’s Pet Fresh)
- Spray Bottle
- Kitchen Towels
- Brush to scrub any stubborn areas
- Vacuum with Hose attachment
The first thing you want to do is fill your water bottle with 8 parts hot (but not boiling) water.
Add several drops of your dish detergent. Again, I went with Dr. Bronner’s just because I like it.
Now that your mixture is ready, take it to your offending area (make sure it’s clear of any clutter) and give it a good spraying. I made sure the back of my car was pretty damp.
Next, I used a towel to soak up any nasty areas. In my case, it was a spot of tinkle.
Once that was cleared up, I used a scrub brush to really work the vinegar, water, detergent solution into the carpet.
Then, I coated my car in the Arm & Hammer Pet Fresh Powder. This stuff smells amazing and really lasts! I let it sit for 24 hours before I used the hose attachment on my vacuum cleaner to clean it all away.
While IÂ know you can’t smell the difference, you can still see one..
Here’s the before:
I hope this helps you out next time you run into something stinky!! I promise, you won’t be disappointed by the results.

Can you use it on carpet, like a shampoo?
I would try it on a small area first, just to be safe, but these are all color safe ingredients so you shouldn’t have a problem. I would even put them in my carpet shampooer, no problem! (after testing my carpet, of course!)
Can you use laundry detergent rather than dishwasher detergent??
I am not sure Kelsey! I have never tried it but I don’t see why not! Test it out and let us know what happens!
So I used this with laundry soap and it works great!! Thank you so much for this!!! This is awesom!!
Yayy! I am so happy!
Love this recipe to get stinky stuff out and nice scent in. Thank you. We call our nose art, nose clouds. We always have nose clouds on our windows. I know you this, a little vinegar and swoosh—it’s off! I keep a little spray bottle of vinegar in my purse. I have a service dog, so when we are in someone else’s car it’s a must. Thanks again.
